Two accounts wear the Grok name, and only one of them is xAI
Grok reaches you through two different products with two separate account systems and two separate bills, and "delete my Grok account" means something different in each.
- The xAI account. This is what grok.com and the standalone Grok apps run on. It is created at sign up, managed at accounts.x.ai, and it is the account this page is about.
- The X account. Grok inside X is a feature of X, so there is no separate Grok account to delete there. Deleting it means deleting your X account, with your posts, followers and handle.
xAI states the boundary itself: "While xAI provides the Grok in X service on X.com and X apps, it does not have operational oversight of X's service." Neither company can delete the other's account for you.
Opened signed out on 2 September 2026, accounts.x.ai is the xAI Account Management sign in, and it offers Google, X, Apple and email logins. Which of those you originally used decides whether you can reach the account at all, which is the subject of the next section.
The 30 day window that makes deletion look broken
The second result on Google for this question is a Reddit thread titled "Grok is NOT deleting your accounts when yo[u]...". The explanation is in xAI's own documentation, and it is a feature rather than a failure.
"You can restore your account within 30 days by logging in again and confirming restoration."
So a deleted account is not erased on the spot. It is deactivated and held, and the act of signing in during that month offers it straight back to you. Anyone who deletes, then opens the app out of habit, then sees their history intact, has restored the account without meaning to and will reasonably conclude the deletion never happened.
If you meant it, treat the 30 days as a quiet period: sign out of the web session and every app, and do not log in. If you did not mean it, this is the most forgiving grace period in the category. OpenAI says a deleted ChatGPT account cannot be reactivated, and Anthropic says a deleted Claude account cannot be recovered afterwards.
The API access that goes with it, and the credits that do not come back
One line in xAI's FAQ costs developers more than anything else on this page: "If you are using the same account to access our API, your API access will be removed as well."
That matters because the xAI account is one account. The login that opens grok.com is the login behind your API keys, your team membership and your console, so deleting the consumer side takes the developer side with it.
And the money does not follow you out: "xAI API credits are non-refundable." There is no exception offered for a deleted account, so any prepaid balance is spent by leaving.
If you use the API at all, the safer shape is to move the API work to a separate xAI account first and delete only the consumer one. Top up credits carry their own clock too: xAI says Extra Usage Credits are bought from $5 upward and expire one year after purchase, so an unspent balance is money left behind either way.
What deletion never touches
Three things survive deleting the xAI account, and each of them can keep charging you.
| What survives | Why | Where to stop it |
|---|---|---|
| An App Store subscription | Apple bills it, xAI never held it | iOS Settings, your name, Subscriptions |
| A Google Play subscription | Google bills it | Google Play, Payments and subscriptions |
| X Premium | X bills it, and xAI has no oversight of it | X settings, Premium, at least 24 hours before renewal |
Auto Top Up deserves its own line, because it is the one people have never heard of. xAI lets you set an automatic credit purchase that fires "when your balance gets low", on an amount and monthly cap you choose. xAI documents the usage and credits controls under Settings, then Usage, on grok.com. Clear the rule there before you go anywhere near the deletion control.
Our how to cancel SuperGrok guide covers the split between xAI and X billing in full, and how to remove your card from Grok covers the payment methods and the top up rule.
When you cannot get into the account you want to delete
Two documented failures, both with real answers.
The Apple private relay problem. xAI says that if you created the subscription using Apple's Hide My Email address, you must sign in with Apple for it to be recognised. Signing in with that relay address through Google or plain email produces a different account: empty, unsubscribed, and not the one you are trying to delete.
A compromised account you have lost the email for. xAI says support can cancel the subscription on a compromised account, and that if your identity cannot be verified by email, because an attacker changed it, they can delete the account so you can sign up again. Contact support immediately with your user ID and anything that proves ownership. It also warns that compromised usage generally cannot be refunded when the purchase location matches your usual one.
Sign in methods themselves are managed at accounts.x.ai, which is the surface to fix before you try anything else. Getting a working login back is usually faster than arguing your way to a deletion.
If it is the double billing rather than Grok that you are done with
The most common reason to delete a Grok account is discovering you were paying for the same assistant twice, once through xAI and once through X. Deleting one account does not solve that. Cancelling the right subscription does.
Total what you are actually paying with the AI subscription savings calculator, then read Grok vs ChatGPT if the question is which one earns the slot.
Whizi vs Grok is the side by side and Whizi pricing has the figures: Pro is $19.99 a month billed yearly, $239.88 for the year, with Grok alongside GPT, Claude Sonnet, Gemini and DeepSeek on one plan and one renewal date. The trade to state plainly: live X data stays with the native subscription. Nothing else reads X posts in real time, so if that is why you signed up, keep the xAI account and cancel something else.
- Name which account you are deleting, since the xAI and X sides are billed and managed separately
- Cancel SuperGrok and switch off Auto Top Up before deleting anything
- Cancel an App Store or Play subscription in the store, because deletion never reaches it
- Move API work to another account first, since deletion removes API access and credits
- Sign out everywhere and stay out for 30 days, or logging in restores the account
Frequently asked questions
How do I delete my Grok account?
Through xAI Accounts at accounts.x.ai, signed in with the method you originally used. xAI notes that if the same account reaches its API, that access is removed with the account.
Why does my Grok account still work after I deleted it?
Because logging back in restored it. xAI keeps a 30 day window in which you can restore a deleted account by logging in again and confirming restoration, so any sign in during that month undoes the deletion.
Does deleting my Grok account cancel SuperGrok?
Not if a store billed you. An App Store or Google Play subscription is billed outside the xAI account and survives it, as does X Premium, which X bills separately. Cancel each one where it was bought before deleting.
Is deleting my Grok account the same as deleting my X account?
No. They are two separate accounts with separate sign ins. Grok on grok.com runs on an xAI account. Grok inside X is a feature of X, so removing it means deleting your X account, with your posts and handle.
Do I get my API credits back if I delete my account?
No. xAI states that API credits are non refundable, with no exception offered for a deleted account, and that Extra Usage Credits expire one year after purchase. Move API work to a separate account before deleting the consumer one.
I signed up with Apple Hide My Email and cannot find my account.
Sign in with Apple rather than with the relay address. xAI says a subscription created through Apple private relay is only recognised when you sign in with Apple, so signing in with that address through Google or email opens a different, empty account.
