Which AI app is best on iPhone? ChatGPT, by 11.2 million ratings
ChatGPT is the best AI app for most iPhone owners, and Apple's own chart backs that up. It was number one on the 2025 Top Free Apps chart for iPhone in the US, ahead of Threads and Google. Gemini was the only other AI chat app in that top 10, at number 10. On 11 October 2026 the ChatGPT listing held 11,187,768 US ratings. That's 1.8 times the other nine apps below put together.
The stars don't do much to separate these apps. Eight of the ten average between 4.7 and 4.9, so Grok's 4.9 and Claude's 4.7 tell you little about fit. DeepSeek is the outlier at 3.9 from 12,210 ratings. Whizi's 5.0 comes from three people, which proves nothing yet. The count is the better signal of the two. It shows how many iPhone owners have tried an app and cared enough to rate it.
How do 10 AI chat apps compare on the App Store?
We read all ten US listings on 11 October 2026 and took the exact rating counts from Apple's public lookup data the same day. Prices are the in-app purchases each listing shows, and Apple bills them. Most listings don't say whether a price is monthly or yearly, so the table keeps the names Apple prints:
| App | Stars | US ratings | Size | Paid tiers shown in the app | Needs | Age rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 4.8 | 11,187,768 | 271.7 MB | Go $8.00, Plus $19.99, Pro 100 $100.00 | iOS 18.0 | 13+ |
| Google Gemini | 4.7 | 2,331,630 | 391.7 MB | Google AI Plus $4.99, Google AI Pro (5 TB) $19.99, Google AI Ultra $199.99 | iOS 17.4 | 13+ |
| Grok | 4.9 | 1,498,061 | 186.2 MB | SuperGrok Lite $10.00, SuperGrok $30.00, SuperGrok Plus $100.00, SuperGrok Heavy $300.00 | iOS 17 | 16+ |
| Microsoft Copilot | 4.7 | 1,351,749 | 474.6 MB | Microsoft 365 Basic $1.99, Microsoft 365 Personal $9.99, Microsoft 365 Premium Monthly $19.99 | iOS 18.0 | 13+ |
| Perplexity | 4.8 | 514,014 | 178.7 MB | Perplexity Pro $20.00, Perplexity Max $200.00 | iOS 18.0 | 18+ |
| Claude | 4.7 | 277,600 | 204 MB | Claude Pro Monthly $20.00, Claude Max 5x Monthly $124.99 | iOS 18.0 | 18+ |
| Meta AI | 4.7 | 271,943 | 324.5 MB | None listed | iOS 17.2 | 13+ |
| DeepSeek | 3.9 | 12,210 | 80.1 MB | None listed | iOS 15.0 | 13+ |
| Vibe by Mistral (ex-Le Chat) | 4.8 | 1,306 | 108.5 MB | Vibe Pro $14.99 | iOS 16.4 | 13+ |
| Whizi | 5.0 | 3 | 69.8 MB | Starter Weekly $5.99, Pro Weekly $9.99, Powerhouse Weekly $14.99 | iOS 16.4 | 13+ |
Three columns change the pick for some readers. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot need iOS 18, so an iPhone that stops at iOS 17 can't install them. DeepSeek is the only one that still runs on iOS 15. Claude and Perplexity carry Apple's 18+ rating and Grok 16+, which matters on a teenager's phone. And Copilot's 474.6 MB download is almost seven times the size of Whizi's 69.8 MB.
Prices line up more than you'd expect. ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Google AI Pro, Perplexity Pro and Microsoft 365 Premium all cost $19.99 or $20 in the app. Grok is the one exception. Its full SuperGrok tier is $30.
Which iPhone AI app is best for what you do?
Each of these apps wins for one kind of user. We took every pick from what the app's own listing or help page says it does, and gave every app a losing case from the same sources:
| App | Best for | Why it wins | Where it loses |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Most iPhone owners | No. 1 free iPhone app of 2025, unlimited free text chats, and a ChatGPT extension built into Siri | Needs iOS 18, so older iPhones can't run it |
| Claude | Siri and Shortcuts users | An "Ask Claude" action works from Siri, Spotlight, the Share menu and Shortcuts | 18+ age rating, and Siri requests count against your usage limit |
| Google Gemini | Google account holders | Google AI Pro at $19.99 in the app comes with 5 TB of storage | Its listing says it can't set alarms or send texts for you |
| Perplexity | Answers with sources | The listing sells it as "Ask. Research. Trusted Answers" | 18+ age rating, and Max costs $200 |
| Grok | People who live on X | The listing promises "direct access to X and the web", and its 4.9 is the top average of any app here with more than 3 ratings | Full SuperGrok costs $30, $10 more than the other main tiers |
| Microsoft Copilot | Microsoft 365 subscribers | Its in-app plans are Microsoft 365 plans, from Basic at $1.99 | The biggest download here, 474.6 MB |
| Meta AI | Meta AI glasses owners | The listing calls it the companion app for Meta's AI glasses | Fewer US ratings than Claude, 271,943 |
| DeepSeek | Free use with no upsell | No in-app purchases listed, and it still runs on iOS 15 | 3.9 stars, the lowest of the ten |
| Vibe (ex-Le Chat) | An assistant made in Europe | Mistral calls itself "a European leader", and the app has a Lock Screen voice widget | 1,306 ratings, and it was renamed from Le Chat in 2026 |
| Whizi | Several model families on one plan | Pro reaches Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet, ChatGPT Sol and Gemini Flash | 3 ratings, live only since 26 August 2026 |
Gemini's gap is worth reading in Google's own words. Its App Store listing says the app "does not currently support iOS device actions like setting alarms or sending SMS directly." Siri still does those jobs on an iPhone, whichever chat app you install.
Not every AI app on an iPhone is a chat assistant. Two single-job apps turn up on several other iPhone lists, and both are big. Otter transcribes meetings and voice notes, and it had 84,398 US ratings at 4.8 stars on 11 October 2026. Remini sharpens old or blurry photos and had 355,994 ratings at 4.6. Neither one chats. You'd install either next to an assistant.
Whizi, which publishes this page, is the newest app on the list and loses on every trust signal. It went live on 26 August 2026 and had 3 US ratings on 11 October. There is no iPad version of it, and it has no widget or Siri action. Files you attach in the app are capped at 10 MB each (the website takes 100 MB). The free tier is thin: text only, on Whizi AI and Auto, with 7 messages on day one and 3 a day after that. What it does differently is reach several model families from one account, out of a catalog of 280+ models. The Whizi listing shows weekly plans at $5.99, $9.99 and $14.99, which carry 200, 625 and 2,500 credits a week, and annual plans from $131.99.
Choosing your first AI app on any device? Our beginner's guide to AI apps has a decision path. Two comparisons go deeper on the top picks: Claude vs ChatGPT and Perplexity vs ChatGPT.
Does ChatGPT work with Siri on iPhone? Yes, through Apple Intelligence
Yes. Apple Intelligence includes a ChatGPT extension, so Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence can pass a request to ChatGPT without the ChatGPT app. You don't need an account either. Apple's ChatGPT guide says you "Choose whether to sign in with a ChatGPT account." Signing in only adds those requests to your ChatGPT history.
Your iPhone has to run Apple Intelligence first. Apple's requirements page, dated 14 September 2026, lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone Air and every iPhone 16 or later. It also wants up to 8 GB of free storage, or up to 14 GB on iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and Air.
iOS 27 changed Siri itself. Apple says its new Siri AI, in beta in English since 14 September 2026, runs on Apple Foundation Models "custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models." The same announcement puts daily limits on the server features. Apple says expanded access "will be available for a fee in the future."
The other apps reach Siri through Shortcuts, and Claude goes furthest. Anthropic's iOS help page documents an "Ask Claude" action for Siri, Spotlight, the Share menu and the Shortcuts app on iOS 18 and later. Those messages "count towards your overall usage limit," it warns. Gemini added Lock Screen and Control Center buttons, but its Shortcuts actions only open the app, MacStories found in March 2025. ChatGPT's newer shortcuts widget stays on the Home Screen, per MacStories.
You can put any of these one press away. Apple's Action button guide lets the button run a Shortcut or a Control Center control. Build an Ask Claude shortcut once, assign it, and Claude starts from the side of the phone.
Which AI app for iPhone is free?
All ten are free downloads, and ChatGPT has the most useful free plan. OpenAI's pricing page lists "Unlimited text chats" on Free as of October 2026. Uploads, images, voice and deep research are all limited on it. DeepSeek is the only app of the ten whose listing shows no in-app purchase at all. Meta AI shows the in-app purchases label but lists no items. Our ChatGPT free vs paid comparison goes row by row.
Paying for a plan inside the app costs about the same as on the web. ChatGPT Plus is $19.99 in the app and $20 on the web. What changes is who bills you. Apple does for in-app plans, so you cancel in Apple's settings, not on the vendor's site. Apple's cancellation steps are short: open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, then pick the plan and tap Cancel Subscription. If you're weighing Grok's $30 tier, our SuperGrok review checks what the extra $10 buys.
- Check the "Needs" line on the listing first: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot need iOS 18
- Judge an app by its rating count, not its star average
- Turn on the ChatGPT extension in Apple Intelligence before you install anything
- Put your main assistant on the Action button through a shortcut
- Cancel in-app plans in Settings, under your name, then Subscriptions
Frequently asked questions
Is Apple Intelligence enough, or should I install ChatGPT?
Install an app if you want long chats, file uploads or a model you pick. Apple Intelligence needs an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, and iOS 27 puts daily limits on its server features. The ChatGPT extension inside Siri works without the app, so you can try both before installing anything.
What is the best free AI app for iPhone?
ChatGPT. OpenAI's Free plan includes unlimited text chats as of October 2026, and the app has 11.2 million US ratings at 4.8 stars. DeepSeek lists no paid tier at all, but it averages 3.9 stars, the lowest of the ten apps here.
Is there one iPhone app with ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?
Yes, there are at least two. Poe has been on the App Store since December 2022 and had 53,853 US ratings at 4.7 stars on 11 October 2026. Whizi went live on 26 August 2026 with 3 ratings so far. Its Pro plan reaches Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet, ChatGPT Sol and Gemini Flash, with side by side model chats.
