OpenAI refunds an unused ChatGPT Plus plan within seven days, and little else
Until September 2026, OpenAI gave accidental buyers 14 days. Its refund article now says: "For an unused individual subscription purchase, a discretionary refund may be available if you contact us within seven days of the charge." The current version is dated 14 September 2026, and it covers Plus and Pro bought on the web or through Google Play.
The old line is easy to check. The Internet Archive's 15 July 2026 copy says accidental purchases were "generally eligible" for a refund if you asked within 14 days of the charge, and Whizi read the same words on 2 September 2026. The new text says "An accidental purchase, forgetting to cancel, dissatisfaction, or a plan change does not by itself qualify outside an applicable exception." Not every guide has caught up. On 12 October 2026, a refund guide on page one for this query, dated July 2026, still gave the 14 day rule.
Three grounds survive past day 7: "a verified OpenAI billing error, validated unauthorized charges, or a documented OpenAI service or access failure." Anything else is a request for a favor. OpenAI says so directly: there's "no automatic prorated discretionary refund after seven days."
Even inside the window, the request has to concern your current billing period, and OpenAI lists four conditions: limits on repeat refunds, no substantial use, no active payment dispute and no confirmed abuse. It doesn't define substantial use. A refund also ends your Plus access, and OpenAI asks you to confirm you understand that when you ask.
Who refunds you depends on where you paid
Only the company that took your money can give it back. Check the receipt email or your card statement before you write to anyone, because OpenAI, Apple or Google Play will be named on it.
| Where you paid | Who decides | Where to ask | Stated window | Stated timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| chatgpt.com on the web | OpenAI | Chat widget at help.openai.com, signed in | 7 days on an unused plan | Processed within 5 to 7 business days |
| Google Play, first 48 hours | Google, or OpenAI | play.google.com, Budget & order history, Report a problem, or the OpenAI chat | 48 hours from purchase at Google | Google decides in 1 day, up to 4 |
| Google Play, after 48 hours | OpenAI | The same help.openai.com chat widget | 7 days on an unused plan | Processed within 10 business days |
| iPhone or iPad, App Store | Apple | reportaproblem.apple.com, Request a refund | None published | Update in 24 to 48 hours |
All four rows are as of October 2026, from OpenAI's, Google's and Apple's own help pages. The EU, UK, Turkey and Korea rights further down sit on top of them. Two rows trip people up. A plan bought in the iPhone app is an Apple charge, so OpenAI's chat can't refund it. And a Play charge has two doors for 48 hours, then one, because Google sends you to the developer after that.
How do I request a ChatGPT Plus refund on the web?
You ask in a support chat, not in Settings. The Billing panel in ChatGPT shows your plan, a transaction history and your cards, with no refund control, as Whizi found when it checked the panel live on 2 September 2026.
- Sign in to chatgpt.com with the account that was charged.
- Open OpenAI's refund article on help.openai.com in the same browser, and select the chat widget at the bottom right.
- Ask for a refund. OpenAI's system shows "a quick summary of your refund eligibility" before an agent joins.
- Give your reason in one line, and confirm you understand that refunded access ends.
- If the widget says requires_login or can't find your subscription, select Log in, sign in to the charged account, and reopen the chat.
OpenAI says it processes an eligible web refund within 5 to 7 business days and emails a receipt to the account address. Check spam if it doesn't arrive. Money paid from your ChatGPT wallet may go back to the wallet, and a purchase paid partly by wallet and partly by card may be refunded to both.
Cancelling is a separate act. OpenAI's words: "Canceling a subscription by itself stops future renewals and does not establish refund eligibility." If your request is refused, cancel anyway under Settings, Billing, Cancel plan, at least 24 hours before the next billing date. How to cancel ChatGPT Plus has every route, including the one for a locked account.
Can I get a ChatGPT Plus refund through Apple?
Yes, but only Apple can grant it. OpenAI's cancellation article says "For subscriptions purchased through the Apple App Store, request a refund directly from Apple." These are Apple's steps, from its help page published 17 September 2026:
- Sign in to reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Choose I'd like to, then Request a refund.
- Pick the reason, then Next.
- Choose the ChatGPT subscription, then Submit.
Apple's refund status page says to allow 24 to 48 hours for an update. Apple publishes no refund window, and says eligibility "might vary by country or region." It lists cancelling as a separate step, so do both: iOS Settings, your name, Subscriptions, ChatGPT, Cancel Subscription. Deleting your OpenAI account won't stop an App Store plan either, which is spelled out in what deleting a ChatGPT account does.
Google Play takes refund requests for 48 hours, then sends you to OpenAI
A Play charge can go to Google or to OpenAI for the first 48 hours, and only to OpenAI after that. Google's refund page tells you to contact the developer once "it's been more than 48 hours since you made the purchase." Inside that window, you can ask Google:
- Go to play.google.com and click your profile picture.
- Click Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & order history.
- Next to the ChatGPT charge, click Report a problem.
- Pick the option that fits, note that you'd like a refund, and submit.
Google says you'll usually get a decision within one day, and it can take up to four. OpenAI's refund article sends every Play buyer to the same help.openai.com chat as a web buyer, signed in to the charged account, and sets no 48 hour limit on that door. OpenAI quotes 10 business days to process an eligible Play refund. That's slower than the web.
Cancel in the Play Store app as well: Subscriptions, ChatGPT, Cancel subscription. Uninstalling the app doesn't cancel anything.
Is there a 14 day refund for ChatGPT Plus in the EU, UK and Turkey?
Yes. OpenAI's refund article says: "If you live in the EU, UK, or Turkey, you are eligible for a prorated refund if you cancel your subscription within 14 days of purchase." It's a right, not a favor. OpenAI adds that "the regional rights below still apply" after its general eligibility rules.
OpenAI's EU terms of use fill in the details. They apply to residents of the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, and say the refund covers the fee "prorated from the date you request cancellation" to the end of the period you paid for. You claim it through Support or OpenAI's model withdrawal form.
Turkey is the odd one out. It's named in the help article, but Turkish buyers sit under OpenAI's rest of world terms, effective 1 January 2026, which say "Payments are non-refundable, except where required by law." For a buyer in Turkey, the 14 days come from the help article, not from a clause in the contract.
Both documents count from the purchase. Neither says whether a monthly renewal starts a fresh 14 days, so ask soon after the first charge and don't count on a renewal reopening it.
South Korea has its own rule. Buyers there get "a full refund" if they ask within 7 days of purchase and haven't used the service, and a prorated refund otherwise. The catch is timing. The plan is cancelled the moment you ask, and access ends with it.
For context, the EU's Your Europe page says online buyers can cancel within 14 days "without providing any justification", and for services the clock starts the day the contract is agreed. This page reports what OpenAI and the EU publish. It isn't legal advice.
Five things that get a ChatGPT refund request refused
OpenAI names each of these in its refund article, and any one of them ends a request before your reason gets weighed.
- An open bank dispute. OpenAI "cannot issue a separate refund while a payment dispute is active", or after a dispute has already returned the money.
- Day 8 or later with no exception. Past seven days, only a billing error, an unauthorized charge or a service failure counts.
- Real use of the plan. The window is for an unused subscription with no substantial use.
- A repeat request. OpenAI lists limits on repeat refunds and doesn't say what the limit is.
- The wrong account. The chat has to come from the account that was charged, or from the email tied to the charge.
If a forgotten renewal is your case, cancel today so the next one doesn't land. Charges from Claude, Gemini or Perplexity follow different rules, collected in getting a refund on any AI subscription.
- Check the receipt or statement to see whether OpenAI, Apple or Google Play charged you
- Ask within seven days of the charge if you have barely used the plan
- Name the 14 day right in the request if you live in the EU, UK or Turkey
- On Android, ask Google inside 48 hours, or the OpenAI chat after that
- Withdraw any bank dispute before you ask OpenAI
- Cancel separately at least 24 hours before the next billing date
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a ChatGPT Plus refund if I forgot to cancel?
Not on that reason alone. Since OpenAI's September 2026 rewrite, forgetting to cancel "does not by itself qualify outside an applicable exception." If the renewal is under seven days old and you haven't really used it, the unused plan window may still cover you. In the EU, UK and Turkey, the 14 day prorated right applies too. To stop the next renewal billing, remove your card from ChatGPT in Settings, then Billing.
How long does a ChatGPT refund take?
OpenAI processes an eligible web refund within 5 to 7 business days and a Google Play refund within 10 business days, as of October 2026. Apple says to expect an update within 24 to 48 hours, and Google Play usually decides within a day, up to four. To attach proof of the charge, get your ChatGPT invoice and receipt from Settings, then Billing.
Does cancelling ChatGPT Plus give me a refund?
No. OpenAI says cancelling "stops future renewals and does not establish refund eligibility." You keep Plus until the end of the period you paid for, and a refund is a separate request in the help.openai.com chat widget. What happens to your chats afterwards is covered in what you keep after cancelling ChatGPT Plus.
Does the same refund policy cover ChatGPT Pro?
Yes. OpenAI's refund article covers individual ChatGPT subscriptions bought on the web or through Google Play, so Pro gets the same chat widget and the same seven day rule. ChatGPT Business is different: unused seats are "generally non-refundable" for the billing period you committed to. To move down a tier, how to downgrade ChatGPT Plus covers Go, free and Pro to Plus.
