Grok card declined? The fix depends on who bills you: xAI, X, Apple or Google

In brief

Fix a declined card on Grok by finding who bills you (xAI, X, Apple or Google), matching the billing address, finishing 3D Secure and then calling your bank, which usually made the refusal. xAI's Grok FAQ, updated 20 October 2026, gives no decline guidance, and 17 of Stripe's 50 card decline codes reach you with no reason.

Who bills your Grok decides what a declined card does

Four companies can charge you for Grok, and each one treats a declined card its own way. Check your receipt email or your phone's subscription list first. xAI's Grok FAQ says you can reply to that receipt email for billing help.

xAI's own rule is one sentence. Its consumer terms, updated 27 October 2026, say: "If your payment is not successful, we may downgrade your account or suspend your access to the Service until payment is received." X is stricter. Its purchaser terms say you "must provide new payment information for your X Premium subscription or your subscription will be canceled."

The two app stores give you more time. Apple's developer guide has the App Store try to collect payment "for up to 60 days." Google's subscription lifecycle sets account hold at 60 days minus any grace period. We read all four on 2 November 2026.

Why can't xAI tell you why your card was declined?

xAI can't tell you because the bank keeps the reason, and xAI hasn't written a word about declines. Its Grok FAQ, updated 20 October 2026, never uses the word "declined". OpenAI and Anthropic each publish a decline article. OpenAI's version admits: "We typically don't receive detailed decline reasons from banks."

Stripe takes the card on grok.com. xAI's privacy policy names Stripe, the Apple App Store and Google Play as its payment processors, and grok.com loads Stripe's checkout script, which we checked on 2 November 2026. So Stripe's codes are the ones in play. We sorted the 50 card codes on its decline code list the same day.

Thirteen codes say the card was refused "for an unknown reason." Stripe tells shops to show four more, such as stolen_card, as a plain decline. For most of the no reason codes, Stripe's next step reads: "The customer needs to contact their card issuer for more information." Apple is in the same spot for app purchases. Its decline page, published 22 October 2026, says "Apple doesn't have information about why the payment method was declined."

What does each Grok decline message mean?

Each Grok decline message points at a different fix: a plain grok.com decline means your bank or Stripe's fraud screen refused the charge, while a Google Play account message means Google wants more details from you. The grok.com wording comes from Google autocomplete, since xAI publishes none. The rest is quoted from xAI's, X's, Apple's and Google's own pages, all read on 2 November 2026.

How do you fix a declined card on Grok?

Find who bills you first, because a new card on grok.com won't fix a plan Apple bills. Then work down this list.

  1. Read the receipt or your phone's subscription list to see whether xAI, X, Apple or Google charges you.
  2. Retype the card number, expiry, security code and billing address exactly as your bank holds them.
  3. Turn off the ad blocker and VPN. xAI says extensions can block its billing portal, and they can block the bank's 3D Secure page too.
  4. Approve the bank's one time code or app prompt without refreshing the page.
  5. Check that the balance covers the full charge, tax included.
  6. Call your bank. Ask why the charge from xAI or X was refused, and ask it to allow online, international and recurring payments.
  7. Update the card where the plan lives: grok.com/?_s=billing for SuperGrok, grok.com/dashboard/billing for The X Subscription.
  8. If you still can't reach the payment options, xAI's FAQ says to "contact support to update the card."

Stop clicking Subscribe after two or three failures. Every attempt is a fresh charge request to your bank. How to remove a card from Grok shows all four places a Grok card can sit, so you change the right one. If the charge went through and SuperGrok still shows the free plan, that's a different fault, covered in paid for SuperGrok but it's not working.

Why does switching to The X Subscription fail on a card that pays for SuperGrok?

Switching charges your card the new plan's full price, and the refund for your old plan comes back on its own. xAI launched The X Subscription on 12 October 2026, bundling Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium. It's open to new customers from launch day, and existing SuperGrok plans keep running unless you switch. xAI's pricing doc says the prorated refund "goes back to your original payment method separately from your checkout total, so your new plan is charged at full price." It adds that refunds "can take a few days to appear."

That matters for a card with a tight limit. The same doc lists Premium at $30 a month and Super at $1,000 a year, as of November 2026. Your card has to clear the whole amount in one charge, while the old plan's money is still on its way back. Stripe files that kind of refusal under card_velocity_exceeded or insufficient_funds.

Two more rules stop a switch. xAI's eligibility chart says that with an unpaid invoice or a past due payment you can't switch "Not until it's paid." Its fix reads "Pay any open or past-due Cursor invoices, or update your payment method, then try again." The same chart says checkout may refuse the method your current plan uses. Then you "Choose a supported payment method, then try again," and your current plan keeps working until you do. The web checkout takes cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Link, per xAI's payment methods page. Some are only offered in certain countries.

Think before you retry with a new card. xAI says the switch is permanent, and "Support can't undo it for you."

Can you pay for Grok another way when your card keeps failing?

Yes, two ways. On grok.com, The X Subscription takes Apple Pay, Google Pay and Link next to cards. Or buy SuperGrok inside the Grok app, where Apple or Google runs the payment with whatever your store account holds. That route skips xAI's checkout, though your bank still sees an Apple or Google charge. You'll then cancel through the store, which how to cancel SuperGrok covers. Refunds split: Apple handles App Store refunds, while xAI's FAQ sends Google Play refunds to its own xAI Refund Request form.

xAI names no rule on prepaid or virtual cards as of November 2026. Single use virtual cards are the risky kind. Revolut's virtual card page says its disposable card's details "refresh every time you pay," while its multi use card is the one for "recurring and contactless payments." A Grok renewal would hit a card number that's gone.

Location rules sit under all of this. If the Grok app isn't in your country's store, Grok not available in your country lists where it's missing. Our wider guide to paying for AI when your card is declined covers bank blocks at every AI company, and the ChatGPT and Claude versions of this page quote those vendors' own decline articles.

Whizi won't get you past a bank refusal. Its web checkout runs on Stripe too, so a card your bank blocks for xAI can fail there in the same way. Its iPhone and Android apps bill through Apple and Google, and Whizi Pro carries Grok next to Claude and GPT on one renewal.

Workflow checklist
  • Name who bills you before you change a card: xAI, X, Apple or Google
  • Type the billing address exactly as your bank holds it
  • Turn off the ad blocker and VPN so 3D Secure can finish
  • Ask your bank about the refused charge from xAI or X
  • Before switching to The X Subscription, check the card can take the full new price
  • If the web keeps refusing, use Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link or the Grok app
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Why is my card declined on Grok when it works everywhere else?

Because xAI is an online merchant taking a recurring and often foreign payment, and banks can block each of those separately. Apple gives the same advice for app purchases: ask your bank to allow international purchases on the card. Ask for online and recurring payments too, and finish 3D Secure when it appears.

Why was my card declined on the Grok free trial?

For the same reasons as a paid month, since your bank checks the card either way. xAI's Grok FAQ doesn't describe a SuperGrok free trial as of November 2026, and its terms only mention "trial features" in general. So xAI publishes no trial rule that would explain a refusal. Call your bank about the charge attempt.

Does Grok retry a failed payment?

xAI publishes no retry schedule. Its terms only say it may downgrade or suspend the account until you pay. Pink Card, a crypto card seller, says renewals on its own cards were retried every 11 to 56 hours for up to 7 days, which is its data, not xAI's. Apple retries App Store renewals for up to 60 days.

Why did I get a decline when I didn't buy anything?

It may be an automatic top-up, not the plan. xAI says Auto Top-up "charges your saved payment method when your available balance drops to a pre-set threshold," and only after you turn it on. You can switch it off under Additional usage credits at grok.com/dashboard/billing.
