Grok not available in your country: xAI has no list, and 14 App Stores lack the app

In brief

Grok is not available in your country when xAI keeps its app out of your App Store or US sanctions apply, and xAI publishes no country list to check. On 18 October 2026 the Grok iPhone app was missing from 14 of 174 App Store countries, including China, Russia, Iraq and Lebanon. ChatGPT was missing from 6.

Why does Grok say it is not available in your country?

Grok says it isn't available in your country when xAI has decided not to serve the place it thinks you're in. Nothing on your phone is broken. And xAI doesn't publish a list of supported countries, so you can't check the way you can for ChatGPT or Claude. We built that list ourselves from Apple's App Store on 18 October 2026. Work through it in this order:

  1. Find your country in the table in the next section. If the Grok app is missing from your App Store, xAI chose not to sell it there, and reinstalling won't change that.
  2. If your store has the app, check your connection and your account. A VPN, a work proxy or an Apple Account set to another country can each make Grok look blocked.
  3. If you're in Iran, Cuba, North Korea or Syria, stop here. Apple runs no App Store in any of them, so there's no Grok app to get. xAI's terms also rule out countries under US sanctions.
The Grok app is missing from more App Stores than ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini

Grok has the shortest reach of the four big assistant apps. It's missing in 14 countries. Gemini is missing in 4, ChatGPT in 6 and Claude in 9. We asked Apple's public lookup API for each app in every country code. An App Store answered in 174 countries. Hong Kong is the odd one out, since Grok is listed there and ChatGPT and Claude aren't.

Which countries is Grok not available in?

The Grok iPhone app isn't in the App Store in 14 countries: Afghanistan, Belarus, China, both Congos, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Macau, Myanmar, Russia, Venezuela, Yemen and Zimbabwe. That's our count for 18 October 2026. The table sets the other three big apps next to it, read from the same API on the same day.

Nine of those 14 have ChatGPT. In Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Zimbabwe and the two Congos, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are all in the store and only Grok is missing. xAI hasn't said why. One pattern stands out, though. Ten of the 14 have a US country sanctions program on the Treasury's OFAC list: Afghanistan, Belarus, Congo (Kinshasa), Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Myanmar, Russia, Venezuela and Yemen. Most of those programs target named people and firms, not a whole country. OpenAI still sells its app in 7 of the 10, so xAI draws a wider line.

Two limits on our count. We read the App Store only, because Google Play doesn't offer a public lookup by country, so Android may differ. And a missing app doesn't prove grok.com refuses you too. We could only test the website from the US, and xAI doesn't say whether it checks location there.

xAI publishes no country list, unlike OpenAI, Anthropic and Google

xAI is the only one of the four big assistant makers with no public country list for its chatbot. We read its consumer FAQ, its legal FAQ and its terms of service on 18 October 2026. None of them names a country where Grok is or isn't offered. The legal FAQ says only that "limited free access and paid subscription plans" vary "depending on your location".

CompanyPublic country listWhat it says about other places
OpenAI (ChatGPT)Yes, one list for its servicesAccess from outside it "may result in your account being blocked or suspended"
Anthropic (Claude)Yes, about 185 places"Any country or region not listed is unsupported"
Google (Gemini)Yes, "over 230 countries and territories" for the web appSeparate lists for the web app, the phone apps and the API
xAI (Grok)NoIts terms rule out countries under US sanctions without naming any

The closest thing xAI has is a sanctions clause. Its terms, last updated on 12 October 2026, make you promise you aren't located in a country "for which the United States maintains trade or economic sanctions or embargoes". The clause names no country. Only Cuba, Iran and North Korea sit under a full US embargo, per OFAC, so the clause alone can't explain why Iraq or Zimbabwe lack the app. The other three lists are on OpenAI's site, Anthropic's site and Google's help center.

Which governments have blocked Grok?

Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines blocked Grok nationwide in January 2026, and all three lifted the block within weeks. Each block followed reports that Grok's image tool was used to make sexualised images of real people. Turkey went further back, in July 2025, but blocked posts rather than the service.

CountryBlockedRestoredWhat the government said
Indonesia10 January 20261 February 2026Access back "on a conditional basis and under strict supervision"
Malaysia11 January 202623 January 2026Lifted after X added safeguards, "subject to continuous monitoring"
Philippines16 January 202621 January 2026The DICT closed its investigation and lifted the restriction
Turkey9 July 2025Not a full blockA court blocked some Grok content after about 50 posts were flagged

All four countries had the Grok app in the App Store on 18 October 2026. So if you're in one of them and Grok still won't load, check the next section first. One feature can also be fenced while the chat works. xAI said in a statement on X in January 2026 that it had stopped the Grok account from editing images of real people into revealing clothing, and that it would geoblock content where local law forbids it. The AP found the edit tool still open to free users the next morning.

My country has the Grok app, so why is Grok still blocked?

If Grok is in your country's App Store and still refuses you, the cause is usually your connection, your account or one feature. Your country is rarely the problem then.

  • Your connection exits somewhere else. A VPN, a company proxy or hotel Wi-Fi abroad can hand xAI an address in a country on the missing list.
  • Your Apple Account is set to another country. The App Store sells by the country on your account. Apple says a change means cancelling subscriptions that block it, and you "might need to enter a valid payment method for your new country or region."
  • You're too young. xAI's terms say you "must be at least 13 years old or the minimum age required in your country". In Australia, xAI uses age checks before it shows 18+ content.
  • A feature is geoblocked, not Grok. Image edits of real people are the known case since January 2026.

Developers hit a lookalike on the API. xAI's regions page, dated 10 October 2026, says the US regional endpoint serves only Grok's two newest models and none of the image, video or voice APIs. Ask it for any other model and you get a 404, which reads like a country block but isn't one. Point your client at the global endpoint first.

Can you use a VPN to get Grok?

We won't walk you through one. xAI's terms don't mention VPNs at all, but they do make you promise you aren't in a country under US sanctions. In Cuba, Iran and North Korea that makes a VPN a legal problem, not a terms problem.

Elsewhere the risk is your account. OpenAI says outright that use from outside its list "may result in your account being blocked or suspended". xAI hasn't said what it does. That's not a promise it won't. A paid plan you can only reach through a tunnel is a weak base for work you rely on.

What still works when Grok is not available where you are?

Another assistant whose app is in your store is the fastest fix. In 9 of the 14 countries without Grok, ChatGPT's app is there. In six of them (Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Zimbabwe and both Congos) Claude and Gemini are too. In Macau and Venezuela only Gemini is listed. In China, Russia and Belarus none of the four is in the store. There, assistants built outside the US set their own rules. DeepSeek's app was in 172 of 174 stores on 18 October 2026, missing only in the UK and Italy.

If Grok left your store but your country is still on OpenAI's list, ChatGPT not available in your country explains OpenAI's three checks. Open models you run on your own computer have no country check at all. They do need a strong GPU.

Whizi's Pro plan puts Grok next to Claude and GPT on one bill, as using Grok in Whizi sets out. It's no route around sanctions. Whizi's own terms ask app users to confirm they aren't in a country under a US embargo.

Grok missing from your store? Pick an app from the table that's there.

Workflow checklist
  • Find your country in the App Store table: 14 countries had no Grok app on 18 October 2026
  • Turn off any VPN, proxy or relay that exits in another country, then reload Grok
  • Check that your Apple Account is set to the country you live in
  • Confirm you meet the age rule: 13, or the minimum age in your country
  • On the API, call the global endpoint before you treat a 404 as a country block
  • If Grok is missing, check which of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini your store carries
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Grok available in China or Hong Kong?

Not in mainland China or Macau, but yes in Hong Kong. On 18 October 2026 the Grok app was in Hong Kong's App Store and missing from the China and Macau stores. Hong Kong is a rare place where Grok beats ChatGPT and Claude, whose apps weren't listed there. Claude not available in your country covers why Anthropic leaves it out.

Why is Grok not available in Iraq, Lebanon or Zimbabwe?

Because xAI doesn't list its app there, and it hasn't said why. All three App Stores carried ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini on 18 October 2026, so Grok is the only one missing. Iraq and Lebanon have US sanctions programs aimed at named people, while Zimbabwe has none on OFAC's list. ChatGPT works in all three, and ChatGPT not available in your country covers OpenAI's checks.

Why is Grok not available in the UK or Europe?

It is available. The Grok app was in the UK App Store and in all 27 EU stores on 18 October 2026. What UK and EU users run into is a feature limit: xAI said in January 2026 that it would geoblock content where local law forbids it, and that it had stopped edits of real people into revealing clothing. If that feature is the reason you came, Grok alternatives compares the assistants that do the same job.

Does a VPN fix Grok not available in your country?

It changes what xAI sees, not what xAI's terms say. You still promise you aren't in a country under US sanctions, and in Cuba, Iran and North Korea that makes a VPN a legal risk. xAI hasn't said what it does to accounts used from outside its markets.
