Poe vs ChatGPT Plus: Poe meters every GPT message (2,828 short ones for $19.99), Plus says only "Limits apply"

In brief

In Poe vs ChatGPT, ChatGPT Plus wins for heavy GPT use and long chats, and Poe wins for light use split across GPT, Claude and Gemini. Read 12 October 2026, Poe's 660,000 monthly points buy 2,828 short GPT-6.1 Sol answers at OpenAI's API price, but only 38 that fill the 256K window Plus allows.

Which is better, Poe or ChatGPT Plus?

Poe vs ChatGPT is a choice between a meter and an unpublished limit. Poe's $19.99 plan gives you 660,000 points a month, and each message you send spends some of them at the rate that its bot sets. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 and lets you chat until you hit a limit OpenAI doesn't print. On OpenAI's Sol model, the meter runs like this.

660,000 Poe points buy 2,828 short GPT-6.1 Sol answers, or 38 that fill Plus's 256K window

Poe's public GPT-6.1 Sol page didn't show its rates when we read it on 12 October 2026, so these counts use OpenAI's own API price of $2 per million tokens in and $10 out. Poe values points at $30 per million, which makes the 660,000 points worth $19.80. A fresh question of 1,000 tokens with a 500 token answer costs 233 points. That's 2,828 of them a month, or about 94 a day.

Poe says you pay less than OpenAI's rate, not more. Its Purchases FAQ puts it plainly: "You will save on Poe compared to equivalent direct API usage, given current rates." On the GPT text models that Poe's public API list does price, the gap is 9.1%. GPT-5.4 costs $2.27 in and $13.64 out per million tokens there, against OpenAI's $2.50 and $15. So read 2,828 as a floor for answers that don't reason. About 3,100 is the likely figure.

The bottom three rows are the part that decides it. Every turn re-sends the whole chat, and Poe bills that history as input. At 54,000 tokens, the most Plus lets an Instant chat hold, one Sol turn costs 3,767 points. Fill the 256K window that Plus gives its reasoning chats and a single turn costs 17,233. That's 38 a month.

Plus wins if you live in one long GPT thread. Poe wins if you ask lots of short, fresh questions and spread them across OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.

How many GPT messages does Poe's $19.99 plan buy?

Poe's $19.99 plan buys 565 to 56,571 short GPT answers a month, depending on which OpenAI model you pick. The table below prices one answer that sends 1,000 tokens in and gets 500 back, at Poe's $30 per million points. It covers the GPT models that ChatGPT Plus also lists, and three from other vendors so that you can compare.

Claude Sonnet 5.5$2.02 / $10.10Poe API list2362,800
Gemini 3.8 Flash$0.76 / $3.79Poe API list887,467

The GPT rows use OpenAI's list price, because we couldn't see Poe's own GPT-6 rate cards on that day. The Claude and Gemini rows come straight from the dollar rates on Poe's API model list. Poe prices Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Gemini 3.8 Flash about 1% above Anthropic's and Google's own rates. Claude Opus 4.8 runs about 14% under Anthropic's $5 and $25, and every GPT text model Poe lists sits 9.1% under OpenAI.

Reasoning changes the math. Sol and Astra both bill the thinking they do as output tokens, so a Sol answer that thinks for 2,000 tokens before it writes 500 of them costs 900 points, not 233. Poe's FAQ also gives a cache discount when you reply quickly, "50% for some applicable OpenAI models", which takes some of the sting out of a long thread.

ChatGPT Plus prices none of this. OpenAI's pricing page lists GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on Plus with "expanded messages" and one footnote: "Limits apply." You pay $20 a month, and OpenAI doesn't say how many Sol messages that buys.

Does ChatGPT Plus have message limits?

Yes, but OpenAI publishes numbers only for ChatGPT Work and Codex, not for ordinary chat. Its What is ChatGPT Plus article says Plus "may include usage limits such as message caps." It gives no count.

The one Plus table OpenAI does publish is on its Codex and ChatGPT Work pricing page. It estimates local messages per five hours, and it calls them "not fixed message limits."

Model, as of October 2026Plus: estimated ChatGPT Work and Codex messages per 5 hoursPoe: short answers in 660,000 points a month
GPT-6 Astra5 to 45565
GPT-6.1 Sol15 to 1602,828
GPT-6 Sol15 to 1502,828
GPT-6 Luna350 to 3,00056,571

Those agent tasks aren't short questions, so the two columns don't line up one for one. What they show is the shape. The Plus allowance for Work and Codex refills every five hours, with weekly limits that "may also apply". Poe's pool refills once a month, and "Unused points do not roll over, unless specified."

Plus also caps how much of a chat the model can see at once. OpenAI's pricing page gives Plus a 54K token window for Instant and 256K for reasoning, against 27K for Instant on the free plan. Poe says subscribers "Unlock full context length for each bot - up to 2M tokens." You get the whole window on Poe. You pay for every token.

If you run out on Plus, you can wait it out, switch to another model, or buy ChatGPT credits for Work and Codex. If you run out on Poe, you can buy more points at $30 per million, and they last for a year. OpenAI Support won't reset a limit for you, and its models article says so: "OpenAI Support does not reset ChatGPT or Codex usage limits."

What does ChatGPT Plus include that Poe doesn't, and the reverse?

ChatGPT Plus is one vendor's models wrapped in tools, and Poe is many vendors' models behind one meter. Both of the lists below come from each company's own pages, and we read them on 12 October 2026.

As of October 2026ChatGPT Plus, $20 a monthPoe, $19.99 a month

The tools row is where Plus earns its $20. Deep research, Codex and ChatGPT Work come with the plan and run inside OpenAI's own apps. If you mostly want to talk to GPT, read files and run long jobs, Plus gives you more for the same money.

Poe has two things of its own. You can invite members to your plan, and each of them can use up to 100% of your points. And up to 200 people can join one Poe chat. The models row is where Poe earns its $19.99. Poe's own FAQ makes the point: "Every major AI company (i.e. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, etc.) offers a $20/month subscription that only covers their own models." So the real rival to Poe is two or three of those plans at once, which ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro together prices out.

Is Poe cheaper than ChatGPT?

No. At the top tier the price is the same, and below it ChatGPT is cheaper for GPT. Poe's plan is $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year on its App Store listing, against $20 for Plus.

Below that, the plans split. Poe's Basic tier is $4.99 a month for 10,000 points a day, which is 42 short Sol answers or 857 Luna answers a day at OpenAI's rates. ChatGPT Go is $8 a month and "may include ads". Free ChatGPT gives every account unlimited text chats on Luna, "subject to abuse guardrails", so Poe can't beat it on that model at any price. Poe's free tier gives daily points that reset every 24 hours, and Poe doesn't publish the amount.

Poe gets cheaper the more of the other vendors you'd have to pay instead. One $19.99 plan covers short Claude, GPT and Gemini work that would take two or three $20 plans. Is Poe AI worth it works through who that pays off for. And ChatGPT Go vs Plus covers the cheaper OpenAI step.

Should you pick Poe or ChatGPT Plus?

Pick ChatGPT Plus if most of your messages go to GPT. Pick Poe if they're spread across vendors and most chats stay short.

Pick ChatGPT Plus ifPick Poe if
Most of your messages go to GPTYou split work across GPT, Claude and Gemini
You keep threads past 54,000 tokens (Sol turns there cost 3,767 points each on Poe)Your questions are short and fresh (233 points for a Sol answer)
You want deep research, Codex and ChatGPT WorkYou want image, video and audio bots from several vendors
You don't want to watch a meterYou want to see what each message cost
You want unlimited Luna chats (even Free has them)You want to share one plan's points with family or a team

Whizi prices the same models by the message instead. Its Pro plan is $29.99 a month for 2,500 credits. As of October 2026, GPT-6.1 Sol costs 10 credits a message, so Pro buys 250 Sol messages at $0.12 each. Claude Opus and Sonnet are on the same plan, and you can run two models side by side. The flat price has a limit. Each turn sends at most 40,000 tokens of the thread, and a Sol turn that size costs about $0.085 on Poe at OpenAI's list price. So for a 500 token answer, Poe stays cheaper per Sol message at every thread length Whizi sends, and about 17 times cheaper on a fresh question. What Whizi adds is a price you know before you send. If you're leaving ChatGPT, Whizi can import your ChatGPT history. Poe vs TypingMind vs Whizi compares how each one bills, and the Poe alternative page covers switching.

Workflow checklist
  • Count how many of last week's messages went to GPT; above about four in five, buy ChatGPT Plus
  • Price your usual Sol turn on Poe: 233 points fresh, 833 at 10,000 tokens, 3,767 at 54,000
  • Keep Poe's Auto-manage context on and start new chats when you change topic, because history bills as input
  • Set a per message budget in Poe's settings before your first long thread
  • Check the usage dashboard in ChatGPT before a long Codex or ChatGPT Work job, since that allowance refills every five hours
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Poe better than ChatGPT?

Poe is better for short questions spread across several vendors, and ChatGPT Plus is better for heavy GPT use and long chats. Read 12 October 2026, Poe's 660,000 monthly points buy 2,828 short GPT-6.1 Sol answers at OpenAI's API rate, but only 38 turns once a thread fills the 256K window Plus allows. Plus also bundles deep research, Codex and ChatGPT Work. Count the tokens in your own chats to see which row you land in.

Is GPT on Poe the same as ChatGPT?

It's the same model and a different app. Poe's official GPT-6.1 Sol bot is "Powered by a server managed by @openai", so you get OpenAI's model. You don't get ChatGPT's tools, such as deep research, projects, custom GPTs, Codex or ChatGPT Work, and Poe bills each message in points instead of a flat $20. If projects are what you miss, a ChatGPT Projects alternative works across models.

Poe vs ChatGPT vs Gemini: which one covers all three?

Of the three, only Poe does. Its one plan carries GPT, Claude and Gemini bots, and Gemini 3.8 Flash costs 88 points for a short answer, so 660,000 points buy 7,467 of them. ChatGPT Plus covers OpenAI models only. Google AI Pro vs ChatGPT Plus compares those two.

Do unused Poe points roll over?

No. Poe's pool refills once a month, and its FAQ says unused points don't roll over unless specified. Extra points bought at $30 per million last a year. ChatGPT Plus works differently: its Work and Codex allowance refills every five hours, with weekly limits that may also apply.
