Is Poe AI worth it? $19.99 buys 1,100 GPT-5.5 answers a month, at API list price

In brief

Poe AI is worth $19.99 a month if you spread light use across several vendors' models or build bots: 660,000 points buys 1,100 short GPT-5.5 answers or 2,820 Claude Sonnet 5 answers, priced within 1% to 14% of the vendors' API list rates. If most of your messages go to one vendor, its $20 plan is the better buy.

What does a Poe subscription buy per month?

A $19.99 Poe subscription buys 660,000 points a month, and each answer draws down those points at a rate the bot publishes. We opened the four headline rate cards on 27 September 2026: GPT-5.5 charges 150 points per 1,000 input tokens and 900 per 1,000 output tokens, Claude Sonnet 5 charges 67 and 334, Claude Opus 4.7 charges 142 and 709, and Gemini 3.5 Flash charges 50 and 300. An answer of 1,000 tokens in and 500 out, the shape the cost index prices, is therefore 600 points on GPT-5.5 and 200 on Gemini 3.5 Flash.

Those counts fall as a conversation grows, because every turn re-sends the chat history and Poe bills the history as input. A GPT-5.5 turn on top of 30,000 tokens of context is 4,950 points, eight times the first turn's 600, which is why Poe ships an "Auto-manage context" toggle that trims what gets sent. Poe's FAQ also lets you set a per-message budget, and it will stop and ask before any single message exceeds it.

The points do not carry over. Poe's purchases FAQ, updated three months before we read it: "Unused points do not roll over, unless specified." A month you barely use is a month you paid for, which is the single most repeated complaint in the Reddit and Quora threads that rank for this question.

How much does Poe AI cost?

Poe costs $4.99, $19.99 or more a month as of September 2026, in five tiers set by points rather than by features. The two consumer tiers are priced in US dollars on Poe's App Store listing, and the three larger tiers exist only on poe.com, which from Canada showed them to us in Canadian dollars at exactly 2.5x, 5x and 12.5x the $19.99 tier's yearly price. Every tier prices a point the same, so the big tiers add volume at the same rate.

The yearly price is the only real discount in the ladder. Poe marks it "SAVE 17%", and $199.99 over twelve months is $16.67 for 660,000 points, or $25.25 per million. The monthly $19.99 works out to $30.29 per million, a shade above the $30 per million Poe charges subscribers for add-on points, which last a year but are "not refundable, transferable, or redeemable for cash". Subscription fees themselves are non-refundable outside Poe's refund policy, and cancelling takes effect at the end of the billing cycle. All of that is on the purchases FAQ.

One line in that FAQ changes the math for households. A subscription can be shared with friends, family or a team, and "once a group member is added they can individually use up to 100% of the subscriber's points". Two people who each want a few hundred flagship answers a month can split one Standard plan, which no $20 vendor plan allows.

Is Poe AI completely free?

No. Poe's free tier gives a daily allowance of points that "reset at the end of each 24-hour period", locks the newest bots behind a subscription, and caps each bot's context below its maximum. Poe does not print the free allowance on its help pages; DailyFix's pricing tracker listed it at 300 points a day on 27 September 2026, which is one Gemini 3.5 Flash answer of the shape above and no complete GPT-5.5 answer at all. TechCrunch described the free plan as limited to a number of questions a day when it covered the $5 tier's launch in March 2025.

What free does cover is the long tail. Poe hosts, in its own words, "Millions of unique user-created bots", most of them built on cheaper base models, and a few hundred points a day goes further on a bot built on a cheap base model than on a frontier chat. If you want to know whether Poe suits you before paying, spend a week on the free tier with the bots you would actually use and open "View Points History" in Settings at the end of it; that history is the honest answer to this whole page for your own usage.

Who is Poe worth it for, and who should not pay?

Poe pays off for bot builders and for people who spread light use across OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, and a shared plan sharpens both cases. It is the wrong buy for anyone whose messages mostly go to one vendor.

Bot builders get something no other consumer AI app offers. Under Poe's creator monetization program you set a price per message on a bot you made, users pay it in points on top of the base model's cost, and "For every message sent to you that your bot responds to, you earn the price you set." Payouts run through Stripe in US dollars once you have $10 owing, 30 to 45 days after month end, the ceiling is $10,000 per 1,000 messages, and the program is open in 23 countries as of September 2026. Poe's own worked example nets a creator $65 for a month of 180,000 messages. Nobody gets rich on that, but a subscription that can pay for itself is a different purchase from one that cannot.

Light multi-vendor users are the other clean case. If a normal week is a dozen Claude drafts, a few GPT-5.5 reasoning turns and some Gemini summaries, three $20 vendor plans would cost $60 and 660,000 points covers it for $19.99 with room to spare. How many AI subscriptions do you need works through that count.

Heavy single-vendor users should buy the vendor. OpenAI's pricing page on 27 September 2026 gives even free ChatGPT unlimited GPT-5.6 Luna text chats, subject to abuse guardrails, and Plus adds GPT-6 reasoning models with expanded messages; on Poe every one of those messages is metered, and 660,000 points is gone in about 1,100 short GPT-5.5 answers or far fewer long ones. Poe's purchases FAQ says it plainly: "Every major AI company (i.e. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, etc.) offers a $20/month subscription that only covers their own models." The flip side is that those plans do not run out mid-month the way a points pool does; they throttle by the hour or the day instead. And if the reason you are looking at Poe is companion or roleplay chat, read the r/PoeAI threads first: the top answer to "Is poe worth it?" there in 2025 was "Not anymore imo", and the reasons were price and model restrictions, not quality.

Is Poe cheaper than paying OpenAI and Anthropic directly?

Poe charges roughly the vendors' API list price, with a small discount on the two dearest models. Every rate card shows a dollar column beside the points, valued at Poe's $30 per million points, so the comparison needs no conversion of ours. All figures are US dollars per million tokens as of 27 September 2026, with Anthropic's from its API pricing page and OpenAI's and Google's from the OpenRouter list prices in the cost index.

ModelPoe points per 1,000 tokens (in / out)Poe dollar rate (in / out)Vendor API list (in / out)Poe against list
GPT-5.5150 / 900$4.55 / $27.27$5 / $309% below
Claude Opus 4.7142 / 709$4.29 / $21.46$5 / $2514% below
Claude Sonnet 567 / 334$2.02 / $10.10$2 / $101% above
Gemini 3.5 Flash50 / 300$1.52 / $9.09$1.50 / $91% above

So a Poe subscription is prepaid API access at list price that expires monthly, with a chat app, image and video bots and a bot marketplace on top. Against a raw API key it wins on convenience and loses on flexibility: the API bills only what you use, while 660,000 points is $19.80 of usage whether you spend it or not. Against a bring-your-own-key client such as TypingMind the same trade holds, and Poe vs TypingMind vs Whizi prices it over a year. (OpenRouter list prices in the cost index were fetched 2026-08-20; Poe's cards were read 27 September 2026.)

Against a credit plan, Poe wins on short turns and loses on long ones. Whizi Pro is 2,500 credits for $19.99 a month billed yearly, GPT-5.5 is 20 credits and Claude Sonnet 5 is 10, so the same $19.99 buys 125 GPT-5.5 answers or 250 Sonnet 5 answers against Poe's 1,100 and 2,820: on a fresh thread Poe is about nine times cheaper per flagship answer, and Whizi has no user-built bot marketplace and no creator payouts. What a credit buys instead is a flat price per message whatever the thread length (how credits work): a 20 credit GPT-5.5 turn is 20 credits on turn forty too, while on Poe that turn costs whatever the history weighs. At $0.008 a credit, Whizi's 20 credit turn beats Poe's once the conversation carries about 33,000 tokens of context, and never before that. Choose by your habits rather than the sticker. Short questions across many vendors point to Poe; long working threads point to a flat rate. One vendor all day points to that vendor.

Workflow checklist
  • Open Settings, View Points History after a week on the free tier; that is your real monthly need in points
  • Price your usual answer: 600 points on GPT-5.5, 234 on Claude Sonnet 5, 200 on Gemini 3.5 Flash for 1,000 tokens in and 500 out
  • Buy the vendor's $20 plan instead if more than about four in five of your messages go to one model family
  • Pay yearly if you will stay: $199.99 is $25.25 per million points against $30.29 on monthly billing
  • Share the plan: added members can use up to 100% of your points, and Poe does not charge for seats
  • Set a per-message budget in Settings before your first long thread, because history is billed as input on every turn
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth getting into Poe?

Yes if you build bots, share a plan, or spread light use across GPT, Claude and Gemini, because 660,000 points a month covers about 1,100 short GPT-5.5 answers for $19.99 and one creator payout can cover the fee. No if most of your messages go to one vendor; its own $20 plan throttles by time rather than draining a pool, and OpenAI lists unlimited GPT-5.6 Luna text chats on ChatGPT as of September 2026.

Are Poe AI chats private?

Poe's FAQ says conversations with bots "are private and are not visible to other users of Poe", and its cross-bot Memory feature is off by default. The bots themselves run on third-party models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others, so your prompt still reaches that provider, and a user-created bot's prompt is written by whoever built it. Poe also says the models are "Not currently" trained on Quora answers.

Do Poe points roll over if I do not use them?

No. Poe's purchases FAQ states "Unused points do not roll over, unless specified", the free tier's daily points reset every 24 hours, and the Basic tier's 10,000 points a day work the same way. Add-on points bought separately at $30 per million are the exception and last one year.

How much does Poe AI cost per message?

It depends on the bot and the length of the thread. On 27 September 2026 a 1,000 token question with a 500 token answer cost 600 points on GPT-5.5, 497 on Claude Opus 4.7, 234 on Claude Sonnet 5 and 200 on Gemini 3.5 Flash, which at $30 per million points is 1.8 cents, 1.5 cents, 0.7 cents and 0.6 cents. Every further turn adds the chat history as input, so the fortieth message costs more than the first.
