Best AI app: ChatGPT overall, and the 9 apps that each win one job

In brief

ChatGPT is the best AI app for most people: the free app chats, talks, makes images and reads photos, and its 11.7 million US App Store ratings top the other nine apps here combined. Gemini is the best free app, Perplexity wins search, and Gemini Notebook wins study. Whizi suits anyone paying for two AI apps.

Which AI app is best for most people?

ChatGPT is the best AI app for most people, and the App Store agrees by a wide margin. On 29 October 2026 its US listing showed 4.8 stars from 11.7 million ratings and sat at #2 in Productivity. The app is free. Its listing names image generation, Advanced Voice Mode and photo upload, and paid plans run $8 for Go and $19.99 for Plus. We read every app's US rating the same day:

The other nine add up to 6,526,280 ratings. ChatGPT alone has 11,736,509, which is 1.8 times as many. Popularity isn't quality, but it does mean ChatGPT is the app your friends can help you with. It loses on the model list. Plus buys OpenAI's models and nothing else, so you'd need a second $20 plan for Claude. Every price for every plan is in our ChatGPT pricing breakdown.

What are the 10 best AI apps, ranked?

ChatGPT ranks first, then the four apps that each win one everyday job: Gemini for free use, Perplexity for search, Claude for writing and files, and Gemini Notebook for study. After them come the two apps that carry several labs' models, then the apps tied to one company's world. We took the prices from the US App Store and the ratings from its US listings, all on 29 October 2026:

We stopped at ten on purpose. Past these, most AI apps in the store run the same OpenAI, Anthropic or Google models under another name, so an 11th pick adds a logo, not a choice. Single-job tools that other lists add, like Grammarly for editing or Otter for meeting notes, aren't general AI apps, so we left them out. If this is your first AI app, our beginner's guide helps you pick one and set it up. Grok's 4.9 is the best average of any app here with a million ratings. Whizi's 5.0 comes from three people, and that proves nothing yet.

Which AI app is best for each job?

Gemini wins three of the nine jobs below, more than any other app, because Google puts the most on its free plan. Each pick rests on what the company's own plan page or its App Store listing said on 29 October 2026:

Perplexity's model list, dated 27 October 2026, puts GPT-6.1 Sol, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Gemini 3.8 Flash and Grok 4.7 on Pro. Claude Opus waits on Max, which is $200 in the App Store. If all you want is images, there are tools built just for that, and our image generator ranking tests them. The task-by-task version for models, not apps, is which AI to use.

What is the best free AI app?

Gemini is the best free AI app. Google's plan page lists Gemini Live, "Image generation and editing", Deep Research, Canvas and Gems on the free plan, plus Gemini Notebook as a "Research and writing assistant." It puts no number on any of them, only a line that "Rate limits may apply."

The catch is the model. Free Gemini runs Google's Flash-Lite model. Google AI Plus, at $4.99 in the App Store, still lists only the Flash model, and Gemini 4 Argon starts at Google AI Pro, which is $19.99. ChatGPT's free app is the runner-up: it's free to download, and its listing names image generation, Advanced Voice Mode and photo upload. Claude's free plan is the one to pick for files. Anthropic's pricing page says Free can "Search the web, create files, and run code," and it includes voice mode. Whizi's free tier is the thinnest here: 10 messages a day on Whizi AI, Auto or Claude Haiku 5.5, plus 2 pictures a month in the phone app and one 5-second video.

Is there one AI app with ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?

Yes. Whizi, Poe and Perplexity each reach all three, and they differ on price and on how far up each family they go. If you buy the three apps one by one, you'll pay $59.98 a month in the US App Store: ChatGPT Plus at $19.99, Claude Pro at $20.00 and Google AI Pro at $19.99.

Whizi, which publishes this page, puts Claude Opus and Sonnet, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and Kimi on its Pro plan. It costs $29.99 a month on the web, $19.99 a month billed annually ($239.88 a year), or $9.99 a week in the app. Credits per message vary by model and can change. Pro adds 100 images and 80 voice minutes a month, and on whizi.io you can run one prompt through two models in side by side columns. Here's where Whizi loses. It went live in the App Store on 26 August and had 3 US ratings on 29 October. It has no iPad version, no widget and no Siri action. The compare view isn't in the phone apps either. After one free clip, video and music need Powerhouse at $49.99. Poe is cheaper to start, at $4.99 a month for Basic. Perplexity Pro is $20 but stops at Claude Sonnet. If you only use one AI, keep that one app: Claude Pro alone costs $9.99 less than Whizi Pro, as Claude pricing shows.

The math only works if you'd otherwise pay for two. The cheapest way to use Claude and GPT prices every route, from free tiers to API keys. If you want both labs' chats in one place, ChatGPT and Claude in one app covers what moves between them and what doesn't. And our chat app ranking compares the multi-model apps on side by side answers.

Which AI app is best on iPhone, Android and a computer?

ChatGPT is the best AI app on iPhone, Gemini is the default pick on Android, and Gemini or Claude is the pick on a computer. On iPhone, check your iOS version first. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity need iOS 18.0, Gemini needs 18.2 and Meta AI 18.4. Copilot needs iOS 26 and is a 504.1 MB download. On iOS 17.4, only Grok, Gemini Notebook, Poe and Whizi install. Our best AI app for iPhone guide goes app by app.

On Android, Gemini is Google's own assistant, and its free plan is the strongest on this list. Best AI app for Android covers the alternatives. On a computer, Google's release notes show a free Gemini app for Mac since 15 April 2026 (macOS 15 and up), and a Windows app (Windows 10 and up) since 10 September 2026. Claude's download page has Mac and Windows apps and a Linux beta. Copilot is a free download in the Microsoft Store.

Workflow checklist
  • Start on ChatGPT's or Gemini's free app before you pay for anything
  • Pick by job: Perplexity for search with sources, Gemini Notebook for study, Claude for files
  • Check the iOS version your phone runs: six of the ten apps need iOS 18 or later
  • Read the rating count, not just the stars: a 5.0 from 3 ratings means nothing yet
  • Add up your AI bills before buying a multi-model app; it pays off only if you'd pay for two
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular AI app?

ChatGPT is the most popular AI app in the US App Store. It had 11,736,509 US ratings on 29 October 2026, more than Gemini, Grok, Copilot, Perplexity, Claude, Meta AI, Gemini Notebook, Poe and Whizi combined. Gemini is second with 2.4 million.

Is Gemini better than ChatGPT?

Gemini is better if you won't pay, and ChatGPT is better for most people. Gemini's free plan lists Gemini Live, image generation, Deep Research and Gemini Notebook, but it runs Google's Flash-Lite model. ChatGPT has nearly five times Gemini's US ratings and costs $19.99 in the App Store for Plus, the same as Google AI Pro. Our Gemini vs ChatGPT comparison tests them answer by answer.

Which AI app is best for students?

Gemini Notebook is the best AI app for studying, because it answers from the notes and readings you upload and can turn them into audio. It was called NotebookLM until Google renamed it, and it's free, with 4.9 stars from 64,000 US ratings. Our best AI app for students guide covers essays and math too.

Do you need to pay for an AI app?

No. Every #1 pick in this guide has a free tier, and Gemini's covers voice, images and research. Paying for the four paid winners, ChatGPT Plus, Google AI Pro, Perplexity Pro and Claude Pro, would cost $79.98 a month in the App Store. Pay for one only when you hit its free limit every week.

Which AI subscription is worth paying for?

ChatGPT Plus at $19.99 in the App Store is the safest single subscription, since it covers chat, voice and images in the most used app. If you'd pay for two labs, one multi-model plan costs less than two $20 plans. Best AI subscription ranks every paid plan by what it includes.
