Which AI app is best on Android in October 2026?
Perplexity is the best swap if you want answers with sources on the side button, and Grok has the top score on Play at 4.9 stars. Only two of the ten listings carry the Contains ads label, and only Gemini and DeepSeek list no in-app purchases. We read the Google Play listing of all ten apps below on 11 October 2026, in the US store, and copied what each one shows.
| App, as named on Google Play | Stars | Reviews | Downloads | Contains ads | In-app purchases | Last updated |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 4.8 | 64.1M | 1B+ | Yes | Yes | Oct 11, 2026 |
| Google Gemini | 4.5 | 48.6M | 1B+ | No | No | Aug 31, 2026 |
| Microsoft Copilot | 4.5 | 9.26M | 1B+ | Yes | Yes | Oct 5, 2026 |
| Grok | 4.9 | 3.97M | 100M+ | No | Yes | Oct 8, 2026 |
| Meta AI | 4.6 | 2.59M | 100M+ | No | Yes | Oct 8, 2026 |
| Perplexity | 4.6 | 2.18M | 100M+ | No | Yes | Sep 28, 2026 |
| Claude by Anthropic | 4.5 | 790K | 50M+ | No | Yes | Oct 9, 2026 |
| DeepSeek | 3.8 | 342K | 100M+ | No | No | Sep 30, 2026 |
| Vibe by Mistral (ex-Le Chat) | 4.2 | 46.9K | 1M+ | No | Yes | Oct 8, 2026 |
| Whizi | No rating yet | None yet | 100+ | No | Yes | Oct 2, 2026 |
Google Play's web listing doesn't show a price range for in-app purchases any more, so the table keeps the two labels it does show. The review count is the one in each listing's header. The ratings panel lower on the same page often runs a little behind it. Claude shows 790K at the top and 741K below.
ChatGPT has more Play reviews than Gemini, the app already on the phone
ChatGPT leads Gemini on reviews by 64.1 million to 48.6 million. That matters because Gemini comes on the phone and ChatGPT doesn't. Reviews aren't installs, and ChatGPT had a head start: its listing went up on 21 July 2023, Gemini's on 5 February 2024. Still, a review takes someone who opened the app and chose to rate it. Grok has the best score of the ten at 4.9 stars. DeepSeek has the worst at 3.8. It's the only one under 4.
Two listings carry the Contains ads label: ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. OpenAI's help center says "We do not show ads to users on Plus, Pro, or any Business plan," so on Android the ads land on the Free and Go plans. Our guide on how to remove ads from ChatGPT covers the ways out.
Two rows need a footnote. The app named Microsoft Copilot calls itself "the AI built for work" and sits on the package ID com.microsoft.office.officehubrow, the one Microsoft used for its Office app. Its 1B+ downloads include that history. And Le Chat has a new name on Play: Vibe by Mistral (ex-Le Chat). Mistral now pitches it as an agent for long tasks.
Has Gemini replaced Google Assistant on Android?
Yes, on most phones. Google announced the switch on 14 March 2025 and wrote that "later this year, the classic Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices." The date slipped into 2026. On 28 September 2026, 9to5Google reported that Assistant was gone on every US and European phone it checked. The Switch to Google Assistant option had also left the Google app at version 17.60. Hold the power button, or swipe up from a bottom corner, and Gemini opens.
The cutoff is hardware. Google's Gemini help center lists 2 GB of RAM and Android 9 or later, and Android Go phones can't run the Gemini app at all. Google's 2025 post said phones below that line keep Google Assistant. Nest and Home speakers hadn't changed as of late September, per the same 9to5Google report.
One stale line is worth knowing about. The Gemini listing on Play, last updated on 31 August 2026, still says "You can switch back to Google Assistant in settings." On a phone that has finished the move, you won't find that setting.
Can ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity replace Gemini on the power button?
Perplexity can and ChatGPT can, but we found no Anthropic page that says Claude can. Android keeps one slot for the assistant. On a Pixel it sits under Settings, then Apps, then Default apps. On a Samsung Galaxy it's Settings, then Advanced features, Side button and Long press, where you pick the Digital assistant app.
| App | Can it fill the assistant slot? | Home screen widget | Source we read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Gemini | Yes, and since September 2026 the only Google assistant on most phones | Yes | Google Gemini Help |
| Perplexity | Yes, plus a Voice wake-up switch on Galaxy phones | Not covered by the source | Samsung US support |
| ChatGPT | Yes, since the v1.2025.070 beta in March 2025 | Not covered by the source | Android Authority, 14 March 2025 |
| Claude | No page found | Yes, with chat, camera and mic buttons on Android 8 and up | Anthropic help center |
| Whizi | No | No | Whizi Android app config |
The slot has limits. Android Authority reported that ChatGPT opens in voice mode from the slot, but it "cannot be invoked with a hotword." The reason given: wake words need APIs reserved for trusted, preinstalled apps. Samsung is the exception for Perplexity. Its support page lists a Voice wake-up switch for Perplexity on Galaxy phones. We found no vendor page saying Grok, Copilot, Meta AI, DeepSeek or Vibe can take the slot.
Claude goes after Android a different way. Its help center, in a page dated 25 August 2026, says Claude "can now connect with your Android device's system apps." That covers messages, email, calendar, alarms, timers and maps, on all Claude plans. So Claude can act on the phone from inside a chat. It just doesn't live on the power button.
What does a Samsung Galaxy phone add on top?
Galaxy AI is Samsung's own layer, and it runs on phones from the Galaxy S24 series on. It covers Writing Assist, Interpreter for live translation, Transcript Assist for recordings, Photo Assist and Call Screening. Samsung's footnote reads "Galaxy AI basic features provided by Samsung are free." The same note adds that later features may be paid.
The side button is where a Galaxy differs from a Pixel. Samsung's help page says a long press "now launches Gemini," and you can point it at another assistant such as Perplexity. There's a catch. Once the button opens an assistant, it stops opening the power-off menu, and Samsung sends you to the quick panel or Side plus Volume Down instead. If Bixby is set on that button, Bixby opens, not Perplexity.
Circle to Search is Google's, not Samsung's, and it isn't a chatbot. You touch and hold the home button or the navigation handle, circle anything on screen, and Google results fill the lower half. Google lists it for the Pixel 6 and later and for select other Android phones.
Which AI app should you install first on Android?
Install nothing first if Gemini already opens when you hold the power button, and make ChatGPT your first download if it doesn't cover the job. After that, pick by the job you have and stop at the first line that fits. If you're new to all of them, our best AI apps for beginners guide walks through the first week.
- Keep Gemini if you want an assistant on the power button and don't want to pay. It's free, it has no ads label, and on most phones it's already there.
- Add ChatGPT if you want the most popular app on Play. Plus removes the ads, while Free and Go keep them.
- Swap in Perplexity for answers with sources on the side button, with voice wake-up on a Galaxy.
- Add Claude for long writing and documents, and put its widget on your home screen.
- Try Whizi if you want GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Llama in one Android app on one bill.
Two specialist apps sit outside the table because they aren't chatbots. Otter.ai transcribes meetings and voice notes, and its Play listing shows 4.8 stars on 45.7K reviews and 5M+ downloads. Grammarly is a keyboard that checks your writing in any app, rated 4.3 on 264K reviews with 50M+ downloads. Both list in-app purchases and neither carries the ads label, as read on 11 October 2026.
Whizi is our app, so here's where it loses on Android. Its Play listing, updated on 2 October 2026, shows 100+ downloads and no star rating yet. It can't take the assistant slot and it has no home screen widget, so it's an app you open, not a button you hold. A free account is text on Whizi AI, 7 messages on the first day and 3 a day after. Paid, Starter at $15.99 a month holds ChatGPT Luna, Claude Haiku and Whizi AI, and Pro at $29.99 adds Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet and side by side chats. Weekly billing is offered only in the mobile apps. Whizi on mobile covers what syncs with the web.
- Check whether your phone already opens Gemini when you hold the power button
- Read an app's Google Play listing for the Contains ads and In-app purchases labels before you install
- On a Pixel, change the assistant under Settings, Apps, Default apps
- On a Galaxy, change it under Settings, Advanced features, Side button, Long press
- Expect only Gemini to answer a spoken wake word on most phones
- Add a second app for the job Gemini does worst for you, not a third assistant
