Which AI app is best for students? Whizi covers all four research paper jobs
We ranked nine apps by how many of four research paper jobs each does within the monthly price of a plan of $30 or less, on the web or in the app. Ties go to the app with more US App Store ratings. The four jobs come from a graded paper. Ask GPT, Claude and Gemini the same question and read the answers side by side, then find journal papers, get a cited deep research report, and download the work as a file. We read each maker's help or pricing page, or its App Store listing, in October 2026.
The $30 line is the price of a standard paid plan at every maker here, from $19.99 to $30. The next plan up costs $100 at ChatGPT, Claude and Grok and $200 at Perplexity. Whizi Pro sits just under the line at $29.99, and it is the dearest standard plan here after Grok.
Whizi's score is a website score. Side by side chats and Deep Research run on whizi.io only, so the iPhone and Android app does 2 of the 4 jobs: paper search and Word or Excel files. That's the same count as ChatGPT, and on the ratings tie break the app alone would rank below every big app here. Use the website for the paper and the app for quick questions.
Side by side answers split the field. Whizi Pro shows two models' answers to one question in two columns, and you can pick GPT, Claude or Gemini for either side. Perplexity does something close with Model Council, which asks three models and merges their answers. Perplexity's Model Council page keeps it to Max, at $200 a month, in search and the iOS app. In Perplexity Computer it runs on any paid plan, but it spends Computer credits, and Pro includes no monthly credits, only a one-time 4,000 that expire in 30 days. So we don't count it for Pro. Poe's App Store listing promises you can "Compare responses from leading AI models" in a single chat thread, and its paid plans cost $4.99 or $19.99 a month in the app. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Grok and Meta AI show one model's answer at a time.
The ranking leaves out studying on purpose. Flashcards, quizzes and tutor modes are their own contest, and Whizi doesn't build flashcards or quizzes at all. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity do. Quizlet, Notion AI and Grammarly sit on most student lists, but each one does a single study or writing job and none of the four, so they aren't ranked. For flashcards and quizzes from any chatbot, our study prompt pack has prompts that quiz you instead of answering.
How do 9 AI apps compare on essays and research papers?
Perplexity Pro misses only the side by side job, and the single family apps miss two. Each cell below comes from the maker's own page or App Store listing as of October 2026. Ratings are US App Store counts we read on 21 October 2026:
| App and plan | Price a month | GPT, Claude and Gemini side by side | Journal papers in the chat | Deep research report | Downloadable file | US App Store ratings |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whizi Pro | $29.99 | Yes, two columns, web only | Yes, up to 30 with DOIs, web and app | Yes, web only | Word and Excel in both, PowerPoint on the web | 3 |
| Perplexity Pro | $20 | Max at $200, or Pro plus bought Computer credits | Yes, Academic scope | Yes | PDF, Markdown or DOCX | 516,999 |
| ChatGPT Plus | $20 | No | No academic scope | Yes | Documents, spreadsheets, slides | 11,486,337 |
| Google AI Pro (Gemini) | $19.99 | No | No academic scope | Yes | .docx, .xlsx, .pdf and more | 2,359,807 |
| Grok Premium | $30 | No | No academic scope | Yes, per xAI's App Store listing | Word, Excel, PDF | 1,528,390 |
| Microsoft 365 Premium (Copilot) | $19.99 | No | No academic scope | Researcher | Word, Excel, PDF | 1,362,450 |
| Claude Pro | $20 | No | No academic scope | Yes, not on Free | .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, PDF | 283,011 |
| Meta AI | Free | No | No academic scope | Yes, per its App Store listing | Presentations, per its listing | 279,949 |
| Poe Plus | $19.99 | Yes, compared in one chat | None listed | None listed | None listed | 53,846 |
Copilot changed the most this year. "Deep Research is being retired in the Copilot app for consumers starting August 18, 2026," Microsoft's support page says. Researcher replaces it, but only for Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers.
Perplexity's journal search is a scope, not a separate app. Its Pro Search page, last modified 3 September 2026, lets you narrow a search to Web, Academic, Finance or your own files. Its export button saves an answer "as PDF, Markdown, or DOCX," per Perplexity's session help page. That makes Perplexity the closest rival here, and the cheapest for a verified student.
Which AI app is best for each kind of student?
Each app wins for one kind of student, and each one has a losing case. Every pick comes from the maker's pages or the App Store listing:
| Rank | App | Best for | Why it wins | Where it loses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Whizi | Checking an essay answer in a second model family | On whizi.io, Pro runs GPT, Claude and Gemini side by side, finds papers with DOIs and returns Word and Excel files | 3 ratings, no student price, no flashcards or quizzes, and the phone app does 2 of the 4 jobs |
| 2 | Perplexity | Cited research on a student budget | Academic scope, Deep Research and DOCX export, and Education Pro is $10 a month | Side by side answers need Max at $200 or bought Computer credits, and the app is rated 18+ |
| 3 | ChatGPT | Most students, and studying | Study mode, flashcards and deep research, and 11.5 million US ratings | One model family, and its 4 free student months must be claimed by 31 October 2026 |
| 4 | Gemini | US college students on a budget | A free year of Google AI Pro, Deep Research and Guided Learning | No academic scope, and the free Pro year is US only |
| 5 | Grok | Students who live on X | Deep research on the web, plus Word, Excel and PDF skills built into every account | No student price, no academic scope, and a 16+ rating |
| 6 | Copilot | Students who already pay for Microsoft 365 | Researcher on Microsoft 365 Premium, plus Word, Excel and PDF files from a chat | Consumer Deep Research ended on 18 August 2026 |
| 7 | Claude | Students who already write with Claude | Research, file creation and a learn skill | No student price, Research isn't on Free, and you must be 18 |
| 8 | Meta AI | Free research reports | Free, and its listing promises "a structured, detailed research report" and presentations | Meta's own model only, no academic scope, and we haven't tested its reports |
| 9 | Poe | Comparing chatbots cheaply | Compares GPT, Claude and Gemini answers in one chat, from $4.99 a month | Its listing promises no journal search, deep research or file export |
Whizi, which publishes this page, is the newest app on the list and loses on every trust signal. It went live on the App Store on 26 August 2026 and still had 3 US ratings on 21 October. There's no iPad version, no Siri action and no widget. Files you attach in the app are capped at 10 MB each. Its free tier is thin: text only, on Whizi AI and Auto, 7 messages on day one and 3 a day after that. Deep Research and side by side chats are on the website, and side by side needs Pro. It's on Google Play and the App Store.
What Whizi does well is the essay check. Ask Claude and GPT the same question in side by side model chats and you see where they disagree before your marker does. Whizi Pro costs $29.99 a month, or $19.99 a month billed yearly. A Deep Research run costs 200 of its 2,500 monthly credits, so 12 runs if you spend credits on nothing else.
Can an AI app find real journal articles with DOIs?
Yes. Whizi and Perplexity both search scholarly sources from the chat, and the other seven search the open web. A DOI is the permanent ID a journal gives a paper, and most citation styles ask for it. It's also the fastest way to prove a paper exists.
Whizi asks a scholarly index when your message asks for papers and Search is on. It tries OpenAlex, an open index of scholarly works, first, and falls back to Crossref, where publishers register their DOIs. Up to 30 papers come back to the model with authors, year, journal and DOI where the index holds one, plus an abstract excerpt when it has one. The model picks from that list. It never has to remember a DOI.
It won't invent a fit that isn't there. On 20 October 2026 we asked Whizi AI for 20 recent peer reviewed articles on convective drying of sand. It listed 5 papers with DOIs and said only 5 of the 25 it found fit the topic. That's fewer than we asked for, and it's honest. Open each DOI before you cite it.
Perplexity's Academic scope narrows a Pro Search to scholarly sources and cites each one. ChatGPT's deep research reads many web pages per report, and it can still land on a paper. None of the other seven makers' pages we read describes an academic source filter.
Which AI apps have a student discount?
Google, OpenAI and Perplexity sell student deals, and Claude, Grok and Whizi don't. Meta AI is free. Year one costs below are for a US college student, from each maker's student or pricing page read in October 2026:
| App and plan | Student offer | Year one cost |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Pro (Gemini) | 12 free months, redeem by 31 December 2026 | $0 |
| Meta AI | No paid plan listed | $0 |
| Perplexity Education Pro | $10 a month after SheerID checks you | $120 |
| ChatGPT Plus | 4 free months, claim by 31 October 2026, then $20 a month | $160 |
| Poe Plus | None we found | $199.99, billed yearly in the app |
| Claude Pro | None | $200, at $17 a month billed yearly |
| Whizi Pro | None | $239.88, at $19.99 a month billed yearly |
| Microsoft 365 Premium (Copilot) | None we could confirm | $239.88, at $19.99 a month in the app |
| Grok Premium | None | $300, at $25 a month billed yearly |
Whizi is one of the dearest apps here for a student, and that's worth saying plainly. Anthropic's help centre is just as plain about Claude: "We don't offer standard discounted pricing for individual plans (Pro and Max)." Microsoft's education page advertised a free year of Microsoft 365 Premium in October 2026, but its offer page wouldn't load for us. Every free student year in the table renews at full price unless you cancel. Our AI student discounts page has the terms for 13 tools.
If you only need GPT and Claude, Whizi Starter is $15.99 a month with the first week at $0.99. It reaches ChatGPT Luna, Claude Haiku and Whizi AI, with Deep Research and paper search, but side by side chats start on Pro.
What is the best free AI app for students?
ChatGPT has the best free plan for students, and Perplexity has the best free research. OpenAI's pricing page lists "Unlimited text chats" on Free, and study mode runs on every plan. Perplexity Free gives 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Deep Research report a month. Claude Free has no Research. Gemini's free app has Guided Learning, flashcards and quizzes. Meta AI costs nothing at all, and its listing promises research reports.
Whizi's free plan won't carry a semester. It's text only, on Whizi AI and Auto, with 7 messages on the first day and 3 a day after that, and no file uploads. DeepSeek is free with no paid tier listed, but it averaged 3.9 stars on 21 October 2026, the lowest of the big chat apps on the App Store.

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT good for students?
Yes. ChatGPT is the best single maker app for students: study mode runs on every plan, deep research is on Plus, and it had 11.5 million US App Store ratings on 21 October 2026. It reaches only OpenAI's models. US college students get 4 free Plus months if they claim by 31 October 2026, as our ChatGPT Plus student discount page explains.
Does Perplexity have a student plan?
Yes. Perplexity Education Pro is $10 a month after SheerID verification, half the $20 Pro price, and Perplexity says it includes everything in Pro. Verified students also get Learn Mode, with flashcards and quizzes. The eligibility rules are on our Perplexity Pro student discount page.
Which AI app gives students a free year?
Google does. US college students 18 and older get 12 free months of Google AI Pro if they redeem by 31 December 2026, and students in more than 140 other markets get Google AI Plus free for a year. Both renew at full price, as our Gemini student discount page shows.
Is there a Claude student discount?
No. Anthropic sells no individual student price, so a student pays $20 a month for Claude Pro, or $17 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026. Students get Claude free only when their university buys Claude for Education. Our Claude student discount page lists how that works.
