Why is Grok asking to confirm my age?
Grok asks your age because two companies sit behind it, and each one runs its own check. xAI wants a date of birth. X wants proof you're over 18, and it asks only in the UK, Ireland, the EU and Australia. Paying won't get you past either one. X's list of age signals has no SuperGrok or Premium payment on it, but an account opened in 2012 or earlier counts. Find your screen in the table first.
| Where you see it | What it asks for | Who decides | If you skip it |
|---|---|---|---|
| grok.com or the Grok app, any country | Your date of birth | xAI | Some features stay closed; xAI doesn't list which |
| grok.com or the Grok app, Australia | Age assurance; xAI names no method | xAI | 18+ content may stay closed until xAI decides you're 18 |
| The X app or x.com, in the UK, Ireland, the EU or Australia | Nothing at first, then a live selfie or a government ID | X | Sensitive media stays off |
| X Premium ID verification, optional, worldwide | A government ID and a selfie | Persona or Stripe, for X | Nothing for Grok; it only counts as an age signal on X |
The xAI line comes from its privacy policy, last updated 27 October 2026: "to access certain features of the Service, we will collect your date of birth before you may proceed." That's the likely source of a year of birth prompt on grok.com or in the Grok app. The same policy lists date of birth among the account data xAI collects at signup. Sign in with X and xAI may already have a date, because the policy says you "may choose to direct X to share" your X date of birth when you log in that way.
The X line is stricter. X's age assurance page names the laws: the UK's Online Safety Act, the Irish Online Safety Code, the EU Digital Services Act and Australia's Online Safety Act. Under them, X says it must estimate or verify whether you're over a set age, "for example, 18 for access to certain types of content." It doesn't ask everyone. It checks what it already knows first.
Grok age checks started with the UK's July 2025 deadline
The selfie screens trace back to one date. Ofcom's Protection of Children Codes came into force on 25 July 2025, and from then any UK service that allows pornography had to have "highly effective age assurance" in place. X's own page lists pornography among the sensitive media it restricts, so X had to comply, and Grok sits inside X.
The UK regulator then turned on Grok directly. Ofcom opened a formal investigation into X on 12 January 2026, after reports that the Grok account was used to make undressed images of real people. One of six duties on its list: X must "use highly effective age assurance to protect UK children from seeing pornography." Ofcom's page adds that it was also assessing whether xAI itself had compliance issues "in connection with the provision of Grok". The fine ceiling is £18 million or 10% of qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever is greater.
Australia is the second front. Its Age-Restricted Material Codes took full effect on Monday 9 March 2026, and eSafety's announcement says AI companion chatbots that can produce sexually explicit, violent or self-harm material "need to confirm someone is 18 or older before allowing them access to that material." A breach of a direction to comply can cost up to $49.5 million (Australian) per breach. xAI's terms of service, updated 27 October 2026, now say: "We use age assurance measures to determine whether users in Australia are under 18." No other country gets its own age clause in those terms.
Is Grok AI age restricted?
Grok is open from 13, and 18+ content is closed until an age check says you're an adult. The terms say "You must be at least 13 years old or the minimum age required in your country to use the Service," and anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian's permission. X sets the same floor of 13.
Apple disagrees with xAI about who the app suits. We read the US App Store ratings of nine apps on 2 November 2026 through Apple's public lookup API. Grok is rated 17+, with "Frequent/Intense Mature/Suggestive Themes" listed among its advisories. X carries the same 17+ rating and the same advisory. Claude is 17+ too, but Anthropic's own minimum age is 18, so its rating and its rules agree. Perplexity is 17+ while its terms let in 13 year olds once a parent accepts them. ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Meta AI and DeepSeek are all 12+. So Grok and Perplexity are the two assistants on that list whose makers admit 13 year olds while Apple's rating sits four years higher.
For a teen, the practical result is a split. A 13 to 17 year old can use Grok's chat with a parent's permission under xAI's terms, but X's minors page says that once an account enters a birth date under 18, "they will be stopped from re-entering a new date of birth." That rule is the trap adults fall into, and the next section covers it.
Why isn't Grok verifying my age?
Grok isn't verifying your age because one of three things went wrong: you're answering the wrong company's check, X can't read your selfie, or an earlier birth date locked the account. Work through it in this order.
- Read the screen's address. A prompt on grok.com or in the Grok app is xAI's date of birth check. A prompt in the X app or on x.com is X's age assurance.
- On X, add your real birth date first: Profile, Edit profile, Birth date. X's help page says the birth date "must be of the person operating the account".
- If X then asks for more, pick one of its two options: "Facial age estimation", a live selfie, or "ID verification", a government ID. When the selfie fails, try the ID instead.
- If X still treats you as under 18, appeal. X's page says you can challenge it "by contacting X Support through the app or website."
- If you once typed a birth date under 18 on X, the date can't be changed by you, so go straight to X Support.
- For a stuck prompt on grok.com, use Report an issue inside Grok. xAI's consumer FAQ names that as the support route and has no section on age checks at all.
Paying doesn't skip any of this. X's list of signals that settle your age without a selfie has six entries: a self-declared age under 18, a completed X ID verification, a legacy verified badge, an account made in 2012 or earlier, a grey badge or a gold badge. A SuperGrok or Premium payment isn't one of them. After that, X tries estimates from your email address and phone number, and only then asks you to act.
Be careful with how-to answers from Grok itself. Grok's own replies on X still turn up when people search this. One, dated 26 July 2025, a day after the UK rules began, had about 159,000 views when we opened it on 2 November 2026. It points users to a government ID and the age assurance prompt, and never mentions the selfie. A second Grok reply from 29 July 2025 tells people to "subscribe to X Premium" first. X's help page lists no payment step.
What happens to your selfie or ID after Grok age verification?
Your selfie or ID goes to X's check, not to grok.com, and X has published a deletion period only for its ID verification route. X's ID verification policy says "We use Persona, and Stripe for ID verification." X collects "an image of the ID and the selfie, which include face data and data extracted from the ID." Its retention answer reads: "Persona delete images of the IDs, selfies and data extracted from the ID after 30 days." X says the 30 days exist so you can appeal a decision.
The age assurance selfie is less clear. X's page says the selfie is "used to estimate their age by our artificial intelligence systems," names no vendor, and gives no retention period. Its only privacy line is that "Third party providers will also be bound by strict data protection standards." Social Media Today reported in August 2025 that X planned to run the selfie check with xAI's own models. As of November 2026, nobody at X or xAI has put a number of days on that selfie in writing.
Set that against ChatGPT's check. OpenAI says Persona deletes the selfie or ID within 7 days and OpenAI never receives the image; ChatGPT asking for ID has the full comparison across eight assistants. Google runs its check through your Google Account instead, and Gemini age verification covers that one. On the xAI side, the date of birth stays with your account, and xAI's privacy policy says deleted accounts are removed "within 30 days unless it is necessary to retain the data". Deleting your Grok account walks through that path.
Verify, skip it, or use Grok somewhere else
Verify on X if you're an adult in the UK, Ireland, the EU or Australia and you want sensitive media back. Try the selfie once, then the ID, and accept that X hasn't said how long it keeps the selfie. Skip it if you only use Grok for writing, code or search on grok.com; xAI's date of birth prompt is the only check there outside Australia. Never enter a birth date under 18 to see what happens. On X it can lock the field.
Whizi, which publishes this page, runs Grok models through the API on its Pro plan, next to Claude and GPT. There's no date of birth prompt, no selfie and no ID check in Whizi; its privacy policy says the service isn't directed to children under 13 and that minors need a parent or guardian's permission. The trade is real: Whizi has no teen mode and no parental controls, and xAI's own content rules still apply to every Grok answer. Using Grok in Whizi lists the models and their credit cost.
- Check the address: grok.com and the Grok app ask for a birth date (xAI); the X app asks for a selfie or ID (X)
- On X, set your real birth date under Profile, Edit profile, Birth date before anything else
- If X asks for more, try the live selfie once, then switch to a government ID
- Never type a birth date under 18 on X: the field locks and only X Support can change it
- Still treated as under 18? Appeal through X Support in the app or on the website
- Expect Persona to hold an X ID verification image for 30 days; X publishes no period for the age selfie
Frequently asked questions
Does paying for SuperGrok skip age verification?
No. X's age assurance page lists six signals that settle your age without a selfie, and a payment isn't one of them. A completed X ID verification and a gold badge from Premium Business are on the list, along with an account created in 2012 or earlier. On grok.com, xAI asks for a date of birth whatever plan you're on.
How do I update my age on Grok?
Update it on X if you sign in to Grok with X: open your profile, choose Edit profile, then Birth date, because an X login can pass your X birth date to xAI. If the date you entered on X made you under 18, X won't let you change it, so contact X Support. xAI's FAQ has no age section; use Report an issue in Grok for a grok.com account.
Can I use Grok without verifying my age?
Yes, for ordinary chat. Outside Australia, xAI asks only for a date of birth, and X asks for a selfie or ID only in the UK, Ireland, the EU and Australia when it can't estimate your age. What you lose by skipping X's check is sensitive media, and in Australia xAI may keep 18+ content closed until it decides you're an adult.
How old do you have to be to use Grok?
13, or the minimum age in your country, and under 18 needs a parent or guardian's permission under xAI's terms of service updated 27 October 2026. Apple rates the Grok iPhone app 17+ in the US App Store. Claude requires 18, ChatGPT and X set 13, and Gemini sets 13 in most countries.
