Why is Gemini asking me to verify my age?
There's no separate Gemini age check. Gemini reads the age on your Google Account, and Google sets that age from the birthday you typed or from its own estimate. Under 18 on that account, the adult features stay shut. We counted the adult-only list on Google's benefit restrictions page on 2 November 2026:
So the chat window isn't the problem. Google's rule for the app is "To use Gemini, you must be over 13 years old or the applicable age in your country." The prompt shows up when you reach for Deep Research, Tasks, Flow or Gemini in Chrome, because each of those says "18 years old or older". In the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK, Google's Gemini limits page goes further: a Google AI plan there needs you to be 18.
Three different things put an adult in front of the check. The birthday on your Google Account may be wrong. Google's age estimation may have guessed you're a teen. Or the feature wants proof Google doesn't hold yet, which is how Gemini in Chrome words it: "If you meet the minimum age requirement, you can verify your age." All three end at the same screen, and the fix is the same.
Is Google's age estimation on in your country?
Google's age estimation is on in the US since a rollout announced on 30 July 2025, and in Canada since one announced on 14 September 2026. It guesses from data your account already holds. Google's US announcement, by Mindy Brooks, VP for Kids and Families, names the signals as "the types of information a user has searched for or the categories of videos they've watched on YouTube."
The widest list Google publishes is on YouTube's age estimation page, read 2 November 2026. It names Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, the US and the countries of the European Economic Area. That's 41 countries once you count the EEA's 30. The page adds, "We will continue expanding to more countries soon."
You'll know if it caught you. Google's announcement says "we'll notify them via email and as they use Google products." The protections it lists are outside Gemini: personalized ads off, Maps Timeline off, YouTube break reminders on, adult apps blocked in Google Play. Inside Gemini, the teen account gets what Google's parent guide calls "added content filters for minors", including filters "to avoid Gemini claiming to be a person or having human emotions, or role-playing as a harmful character."
What stays locked until you verify?
Until you verify, every benefit on the 18 list stays locked and Gemini keeps its teen filters. Your chats, your plan and the Gemini app itself stay as they are. Google's help pages don't make the check a condition of using Gemini.
The losses are concrete. Deep Research is "currently available to users 18 years old or older." So are Tasks in Gemini, Gemini for Gmail and Docs, and Flow. Google's Gemini in Chrome page sets 13 for the browser panel itself, but says "For users under 18, Live is not available", that they "can't turn on the Microphone or Closed Captions", and that they "can't use auto browse." The developer side shuts completely: AI Studio, Antigravity, Colab, Jules and Gemini in Android Studio all need 18.
If you pay for Google AI Pro, this matters more. Several of those benefits are what the plan sells. An adult stuck on a teen-looking account is paying for features Google won't switch on.
How do you verify your age for Gemini?
You verify on your Google Account, not inside Gemini, and it takes one method that Google accepts. Google's age-restricted content page says "Not all verification options are available for all accounts, devices, and regions", so your screen may show fewer choices than this table. Read on 2 November 2026:
| Method | What you hand over | What Google says it keeps | Where it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Government ID | A photo of a driver's license, passport or national ID, as .jpg or .png with all four corners | The ID "will be deleted after your date of birth is successfully verified"; your date of birth is saved to your payments profile and Google Account | Most regions; accepted IDs vary by country |
| Credit card | Card details for an authorization, "not a charge" | Google "will retain this data as necessary to meet legal and regulatory requirements" | Not stated by region |
| Selfie | A photo of your face | Named as an option by Google's US announcement and YouTube's help page; the account page we read gives no retention rule | Not listed on the account page we read from the US |
| Digital ID | An ID stored in a wallet app on your phone | Not stated | Android only, "not available in all regions" |
- Open Gemini and check the profile picture. The check counts only on the account you use there.
- Select Verify on the prompt, or open myaccount.google.com/age-verification while signed in.
- Pick a method. A selfie or a card means no document upload.
- For an ID, confirm your date of birth, then select Submit ID.
- Close and reopen Gemini, then try the feature again.
The card route has one surprise. Google says the pending authorization "may stay in your account for 1 to 14 business days depending on your bank." You won't pay it. Some IDs also go to "manual review", and Google emails you when that's done.
What happens to your ID after Google age verification?
Google deletes an uploaded ID once your date of birth is verified, and it keeps the date of birth. The page is plain about it: the ID "Is stored securely", "Won't be made public" and "Will be deleted after your date of birth is successfully verified." Before that, Google may use the ID to "Improve our verification services for Google products and protect against fraud and abuse."
You can hide more than you think. Google's country notes let people in Denmark, Finland, Slovakia and Sweden block out the national identification number, and people in Norway the birth number. The Netherlands asks you to block out the BSN, and Germany lets you cover the photo and signature on a national ID card or passport. Ireland says not to send the Public Services Card. Hungary says not to send the address card.
One line protects you from scams. Google's age requirements page says "Google will never ask you to provide this type of information in an email." An email asking for your ID or card to "keep Gemini" isn't from Google. Do the check only after you've signed in to your Google Account yourself.
What if Google thinks you're under 13?
An account Google thinks is under 13 has to verify, or it's disabled. If Google learns you may be too young to manage your own account, you get 14 days to verify or set up a parent's supervision. Google's rule: "If you choose not to set up supervision or verify you're old enough to manage your account within 14 days, your account will be disabled and your account information will be deleted after 30 days."
A work or school account has no grace period. Google says such an account "will be disabled immediately" if it isn't eligible for supervision. During the 14 days, Google says, you "can log in and use your account as normal" and download your data. The minimum age is 13 in most countries and 14 to 16 in 20 European ones; our page on Gemini not available for your account lists them.
Why does Gemini keep asking you to verify your age?
Gemini keeps asking when the check landed on a different account, or when Google's systems disagree with each other. A Gemini user posted the second case on Google's AI developer forum on 29 September 2026. They'd verified with a credit card, and the verification page said "You do not need to take any action because your Google account does not require age verification." Gemini still sent them back to it.
The thread got no fix. A moderator replied the next day that the forum covers only AI Studio and the Gemini API, and pointed to Gemini's own Report a problem. Work through it in this order:
- Check the account. In Gemini, tap your profile picture. If it isn't the account you verified, switch, or verify this one too. If it is, sign out and back in, then retry the feature.
- Check the birthday. Google says "If you change your date of birth after you've verified your age, you may need to verify your age again."
- Give it time. A card authorization or a manual ID review can lag. Google emails you when an ID review is done.
- Report it. On gemini.google.com, open Settings and help, then Send feedback, and say the age check loops.
If Gemini won't open at all and says "Something went wrong", Google lists age as one cause among location and account type. Our guide to Gemini's Something went wrong error covers that screen.
How does Gemini's age check compare with ChatGPT's?
Gemini's check is wider and its vendor is Google itself. ChatGPT runs its own age prediction and sends the selfie or ID to Persona, which OpenAI says deletes it within 7 days (ChatGPT asking for ID, checked 27 September 2026). Google runs the check on the whole Google Account. Google saves the verified date of birth to your Google Account "to support your experience across Google services", so it keeps that date after the ID is gone.
Whizi, which publishes this page, runs no age check at all. Gemini in Whizi doesn't sit on your Google account, so there's no age estimate behind it; Gemini Flash is on the $29.99 Pro plan next to Claude and GPT. That's not a way around a parent: Whizi's policy says the service isn't directed to children under 13. Where it loses: Google's own Gemini app is free, and Whizi has no teen filters or parental controls.
- Check which Google Account Gemini is signed in to before you verify anything
- Open the check from Gemini's prompt or myaccount.google.com/age-verification, never from an email link
- Pick a selfie or card if you'd rather not upload a document; an ID is deleted once your date of birth is verified
- Expect a card authorization of up to 14 business days on your statement, not a charge
- Under 13 by Google's guess? You have 14 days to verify before the account is disabled
- Still looping after you verified? Check the birthday, then send feedback from Settings and help in Gemini
Frequently asked questions
Does Gemini ask for ID?
Yes, through your Google Account, when the account looks under 18 and you open an adult-only feature such as Deep Research or Gemini in Chrome. An ID is one option. Google also accepts a credit card, a selfie or, on Android in some regions, a digital ID, so you don't have to upload a document.
Is Google age verification safe?
Google says an uploaded ID is stored securely, isn't made public and is deleted after your date of birth is verified. It keeps the date of birth on your Google Account and payments profile, and a credit card check is kept "as necessary to meet legal and regulatory requirements". Several European countries let you block out your national ID number first.
How long does Gemini age verification take?
Google gives no fixed time on its help pages. The card authorization can stay on your statement for 1 to 14 business days. If your ID goes to manual review, Google emails you when it's done. Reopen Gemini after that before trying the feature again.
Can I use Gemini without verifying my age?
Yes. The Gemini app opens at 13, or your country's age, with no check. You only need to verify to unlock the benefits Google keeps for 18 and over, such as Deep Research, Tasks, Flow and Gemini for Gmail and Docs. The exception is an account Google thinks is under 13: that one has 14 days.
