Why does Gemini say it isn't available for your account?
Your account type or your age causes it, not your phone or your browser. Google's help pages give each kind of account one person who can open Gemini. For most people who see this message, that person isn't them. We read seven of those pages on 18 October 2026 and put the rules in one table:
| Your Google account | Gemini web app | Gemini phone app | Who can switch it on | What Google says you'll see |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal, 18 or over | Yes | Yes | Nobody needs to | No message |
| Personal, under 18 but over your country's age (13 to 16) | Yes | Yes | Nobody needs to, but some features wait until 18 | No message |
| Managed by Family Link, outside Europe | No | Yes, after a parent allows it | A parent, in Family Link | "Gemini isn't available for your account" |
| Managed by Family Link, in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK | No | No | Nobody | "Gemini isn't available for your account" |
| Work (Google Workspace) | Yes, if the admin allows it and you're 18 | Yes, but not in an Android work profile | Your admin, within 24 hours | "Can't access this service" |
| School (Workspace for Education) | Yes, if the admin allows it | Yes, if the admin allows it | Your admin | "Can't access this service" |
| Personal, new or doubted by Google | Sometimes not | Sometimes not | Google only | "Something went wrong" |
Find your row first. If a parent or an admin owns the switch, clearing the cache or reinstalling won't help. Google's sign in help is blunt about children: "You still can't access the Gemini web app with a Google Account managed by Family Link." A child can still get the phone app. A parent has to turn it on first.
How old do you have to be to use Gemini?
You have to be 13 to use Gemini on a personal or school account, or the higher age your country sets, and 18 on a work account. The country age is the catch. Google's age table sets it at 14 to 16 in 20 of the 32 countries of the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK:
Below that age, a European child has no way in on a personal account. Elsewhere, a parent can switch Gemini on in Family Link. In Europe, Google's supervised accounts page shuts that door: "Gemini Apps are not available for supervised accounts in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom." So a 15 year old in Germany waits until 16. A 13 year old in Sweden can sign in today. School accounts are the exception, because Google offers Gemini to Workspace for Education users of all ages once the school turns it on.
Paying raises the age instead of lowering it. Google's plan rules say a Google AI plan needs you to be 18 in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK. Its Google AI Pro page lists features that need 18 everywhere, Gemini Deep Research, Gemini in Chrome and Google AI Studio among them. Are you an adult that Google treats as a teen? Check the birthday on your Google Account. In the US, Google said in July 2025 that it would start estimating ages from account signals. Its announcement says a wrongly flagged adult can correct it "by uploading a photo of their government ID or a selfie."
How does a parent turn Gemini on in Family Link?
A parent turns it on in the Family Link app, and it opens the Gemini phone app only. Google's rule is "A parent must enable access before their child under 13 (or the applicable age in your country) can use Gemini Apps with a supervised account." These are the steps from its supervised accounts page:
- Open familylink.google.com or the Family Link app.
- Select your child.
- Tap Controls, then Gemini, then Gemini Apps. Older versions of Family Link put it under Controls, then Content restrictions, then Gemini.
- Turn Gemini Apps on.
- On the child's phone, close Gemini and open it again.
Give it a few hours. Google says "It may take a few hours for the change to take effect." If the switch is on and the message stays, the rollout hasn't reached your child yet: Google says access "might not be available to your child just yet even if you have Gemini Apps enabled in Family Link." The web app stays closed either way. You'll get an email the first time your child opens Gemini. Under 13, the Keep Activity setting isn't available.
Why is Gemini not available for your work or school account?
Your admin hasn't turned Gemini on for you, or you're under 18 on a work account. Google's admin help says the Gemini app is open by default "to all users over age 18 with a license that provides access". An admin can switch that off. Licenses such as G Suite and Cloud Identity get Gemini only as an additional service, and an admin has to enable it. The screen you'll see is "Can't access this service".
Send your admin the exact path. In the Google Admin console it's Generative AI, then Gemini app, then Service status, set to On. The User access page has a box that allows Gemini regardless of license. Google says changes "can take up to 24 hours". Three smaller traps catch work accounts on phones:
- An Android work profile. The Gemini app won't run there. Google sends those users to gemini.google.com in the browser.
- Search and Assistant switched off. If the admin left that service off, Google says "your Android users can't use the Gemini app."
- A Business edition on a new domain. To get the phone app, the company must sign up with a business email address or verify its domain.
A personal account works on the same phone, but it isn't a loophole. Google's comparison table says chats on standard personal access "may be reviewed by human reviewers". Work accounts with a qualifying license don't get that. Keep company files out of any account your employer hasn't approved.
Why does Gemini in Google Messages say it isn't available for this account?
Gemini in Google Messages has the strictest gate of all: you must be 18 and use a personal Google Account you manage yourself. Google's Messages help says "You can't use Gemini in Google Messages with a Google Account managed by Family Link or with a Google Workspace account." No parent or admin can change that. You also need RCS chats turned on, the latest Google Messages and a phone language Google supports. Google lists over 165 countries for it.
What if your own adult account is still refused?
Then Google is usually doubting the account itself, and the message reads "Something went wrong" instead. Google says the cause can be "location, age, or type of account, among others." It also checks that accounts "have a consistent history of abuse-free activity", so a brand new account can fail. Work through it in this order:
- Open gemini.google.com signed out. Google lets you use some features without an account. If that works and your account doesn't, the account is what Google refuses.
- Check the birthday on your Google Account. Under 18 locks the 18+ features. Under your country's age locks Gemini.
- Check where Google thinks you are. A VPN or an account region from another country gets a country refusal instead.
- Wait and try again. Google's only advice for this message is "You can try again later."
Some people see the number 1034 next to the message. None of the Google help pages we read on 18 October 2026 lists a code 1034, so work through the steps above whatever the number says.
Gemini in Whizi, which publishes this page, doesn't run on your Google account. Whizi's server sends each request through OpenRouter, so Family Link and Workspace switches don't reach it. That helps an adult whose own account is refused: Gemini Flash sits beside Claude Sonnet and GPT on the $29.99 Pro plan (Gemini in Whizi). It isn't a way around a parent or an employer, and Whizi's terms require minors to have a parent's permission and supervision. Where it loses: Google's own Gemini is free, and Whizi's free tier covers only Whizi AI.
- Find your account type in the table: personal, Family Link, work or school
- Check the birthday on your Google Account against your country's minimum age
- On Family Link, ask a parent to turn on Gemini Apps under Controls, then wait a few hours
- On a work or school account, send your admin the Generative AI, Gemini app, Service status path
- Test gemini.google.com signed out to see whether Google is refusing the account itself
Frequently asked questions
Can you use Gemini without a Google account?
Yes, with fewer features. Google lets anyone use some features at gemini.google.com without signing in, but you need to sign in to save Gemini Apps activity. That makes it a quick test: if Gemini works signed out and fails signed in, Google is refusing the account. To clear what a signed in account already saved, see how to delete a Gemini account.
Can you buy Google AI Pro on a work account?
No. Google says you need to sign in with your personal Google Account to get a Google AI Pro membership, and in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK a Google AI plan needs you to be 18. A work account gets Gemini through its Workspace license instead, so the admin decides. Is Google AI Pro worth it covers what the paid plan adds.
Is Gemini down, or is it just my account?
It's your account if one account fails while another account or a signed out window works. If every account fails on every device, Google has a problem, and a settings change won't fix it. Check is Gemini down before you change anything in Family Link or the Admin console.
Can students use Gemini on a school account?
Yes, once the school turns it on. Google offers the Gemini app to Workspace for Education users of all ages, but its age table for schools, dated 19 December 2025, keeps features such as Deep Research and Gemini Live for students 18 and over. Gemini student discount covers Google's offer on personal accounts.
