Best AI chatbot for roleplay: 9 picks and how much of your story each one remembers

In brief

Character.AI is the best AI chatbot for roleplay with ready-made characters, and Claude Pro ($20 a month) is the best for long stories you write yourself. Claude's paid plans read 1M tokens of chat, 111 times the roughly 9K on Janitor AI's free model. Character.AI, Kindroid and Nomi publish no memory size at all.

Which AI chatbot is best for roleplay?

Published memory runs 250-fold across these apps, from 4K tokens on AI Dungeon's free tier to 1M on Claude's paid plans. Prices run from free to $68.99 a month for Kindroid MAX. We read every price and memory limit below on 2 November 2026, at each company's own page or its US App Store listing.

Character.AI carries one big risk. On 12 October 2026 it said it had started a voluntary Chapter 11 process, and it expects a sale "by the end of November or perhaps early December 2026." If nobody bids, the company says, "the platform will be wound down." So export your chats now. Our Character AI alternatives page covers where people are moving.

We left two kinds of app out. One is the apps that sell themselves on explicit content. The other is Chai: it doesn't publish its prices, and its US App Store listing returned "not found" when we checked. The Chai alternatives page has the details.

Which roleplay chatbot remembers the most?

Claude is the one that remembers the most of your story. Anthropic's help center lists a 1M-token context window for Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 on every paid plan. That's 111 times the "around 9k tokens" Janitor AI's help center gives its free model. It's 31 times the 32K that AI Dungeon gives its Mythic and Ultimate tiers, though AI Dungeon lets subscribers spend credits to stretch context on some models.

Context is the part of the chat a model can read at once, and what is a context window explains it in full. When a roleplay outgrows it, the oldest scenes drop out first. Janitor's memory guide says so plainly: "If you overload it, stuff gets pushed out of memory or starts degrading." The Janitor+ dot is our math. Janitor promises "5x more context," so we plotted five times 9K.

Three of the seven apps we checked publish no number at all. Character.AI sells its memory as a set of features that you pay for. Its September post gives (c.ai) lite "Extra memory pins, plus a Memory Usage bar" and gives c.ai+ "the complete memory suite." Kindroid's subscription docs promise "Longer context for short-term memory, with more on Ultra and MAX" and stop there. Nomi's home page talks about "short, medium, and long term memory" without a size.

ChatGPT sits in the middle. OpenAI's pricing page lists 27K tokens on Free and 54K on Go and Plus for its Instant model, and 256K for reasoning models on Plus. It adds a catch. Memories, tools and system instructions use part of that window too, so the room left for your story is smaller.

Claude has a second trick for long chats. When code execution is on, Claude "automatically manages your conversation context" on paid plans, and it summarizes older messages near the limit. Anthropic says that lets a chat go on "indefinitely in most cases." It also uses more of your usage limit.

Which AI model writes the best roleplay scenes?

GPT-6 Astra writes the best scenes on EQ-Bench Creative Writing v3. It led all 146 models at 2176.9 Elo when we read the leaderboard on 2 November 2026. Kimi K3.1 Pro, marked new on the board, sat 4.3 points behind. EQ-Bench calls it "A LLM-judged creative writing benchmark," so a model grades the stories, not a person.

You can run GPT-6 Astra on ChatGPT Plus at $20. OpenAI's pricing page marks it "No" on Free and Go. Claude Opus 5 beat the newer Opus 5.5 by 84 Elo points here, so newer isn't always better for fiction. Our Claude vs ChatGPT for writing test goes further on that.

None of the companion apps' own models is on the board. Character.AI runs PipSqueak 3 and DeepSqueak, and Janitor runs JLLM. Neither of them is in the list of 146. So no one can tell you, on the same test, how they write against Claude or GPT.

What is the best free AI for roleplay?

Character.AI is the best free AI for roleplay. Its September 2026 post says "Unlimited messaging stays on every tier," and that includes free. Paying $4.99 for (c.ai) lite buys "Extra memory pins," not more messages.

Janitor AI is the one that comes in second. Its help center promises "Unlimited chats with millions of bots" on the free tier. The limit is memory: its free model reads about 9K tokens, so long stories forget their start. AI Dungeon's free tier reads less, "up to 4k tokens," per its membership page.

SillyTavern is free software, and its GitHub page calls it an "LLM Frontend for Power Users." You have to bring the model yourself. OpenRouter's free plan gives you 50 requests a day across 25+ free models. That goes up to 1,000 a day once you've bought $10 of credits. You'll need to set up the key yourself, and that setup is the price of the free route.

Which roleplay apps are for adults only?

Kindroid and Nomi are adults only by their own terms. Character.AI, Janitor AI, Kindroid and Nomi are all rated 18+ on the US App Store, read 2 November 2026, and AI Dungeon is rated 13+. We don't rank any app here by how much mature content it allows.

Kindroid's age verification page says its "Terms of Service require all users to be 18 or older to use the platform from day one." Nomi's terms say: "If you are under the age of 18, you cannot use the Nomi.ai platform under any circumstances." Character.AI is the exception. It removed open-ended chat for users under 18 by 25 November 2025 and checks ages with Persona, but teens can still make stories and videos with its characters.

Where does Whizi fit for roleplay, and where does it lose?

Whizi fits the roleplayer who writes the character and wants to try it on more than one model. A Whizi project holds up to 32,000 characters of instructions and 10 pinned files, and Whizi adds both to every message, so the character sheet never scrolls out. Whizi Pro, at $29.99 a month, runs that sheet on Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol, Kimi K3 or Grok 4.7, and side by side chats put two models on one scene. It loses in three places. Whizi sends at most 40,000 input tokens to the model each turn, against 1M in Claude's own app. It has no regenerate button, so you can't swipe for a new reply, though you can edit what you sent. And its free plan gives 10 messages a day on Claude Haiku 5.5 and Whizi AI, at up to 5,000 input tokens each.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Which AI roleplay chatbot has the best memory?

Claude has the best memory for roleplay, with a 1M-token context window on Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 on every paid plan, as of November 2026. ChatGPT Plus reads 54K tokens on Instant and 256K on reasoning models. AI Dungeon's plans top out at 32K before credits, and Janitor AI's free model reads about 9K.

Is Character AI still good for roleplay?

Yes, Character AI is still the best place for ready-made characters, and it keeps unlimited messaging on every tier, free included. The risk is the business. Character.ai said on 12 October 2026 that it had started a voluntary Chapter 11 process, expects a sale by early December, and says the platform will be wound down if nobody bids. Export your chats first.

Is Janitor AI good for roleplay?

Janitor AI is good for free roleplay with community bots, but its free model reads only about 9K tokens, so long stories lose their early scenes. Janitor+ costs $12.99 a month on the App Store and gives five times the context. Our Janitor AI alternatives page compares what remembers more.
