Character AI subscription: c.ai+ is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, and lite is $4.99 a month

In brief

A Character AI subscription costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year for c.ai+, or $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week for (c.ai) lite, in the US as of November 2026. Paid weekly, lite comes to $129.48 a year, more than c.ai+ monthly. The free plan keeps unlimited messaging.

How much does a Character AI subscription cost?

Only c.ai+ has a yearly price, and it's $24.89 less than twelve monthly payments. Lite is sold by the month or the week. We read the c.ai+ prices from Character.ai's subscribe page and the lite prices from its lite help article and App Store listing, all on 1 November 2026:

The weekly lite plan is the one to avoid. At $2.49 a week it works out to about $10.79 a month, and that's more than c.ai+ itself costs. The yearly c.ai+ plan is the cheapest way to pay for c.ai+, and Character.ai labels it "save 21%". But $94.99 equals 9.5 monthly payments. So it only saves you money if you were going to keep paying for 10 months or more.

Buy lite in the app. On 1 November 2026 the web subscribe page priced only c.ai+ and left its lite entries blank, and the lite article tells you to "check the app for your price". Once you've bought lite, Character.ai says it "works across your account on iOS, Android, and web". Prices vary by country for both plans.

There's a cheaper first term at times. Character.ai's summer offer terms list $14.99 for the first 3 months of c.ai+ or $59.99 for the first year, for new and returning subscribers only. Both renew at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. You don't need a code: "If the promotional pricing does not appear at checkout, standard pricing applies to your account." Charms cost extra. They're the in-app currency, and the Charms FAQ lists three uses: extra chat images, skipping slow mode and bypassing ads. The App Store sells Charms packs from $0.99 to $49.99, and c.ai+ adds 20% bonus Charms to each pack.

What does c.ai+ add over the free plan?

c.ai+ adds unlimited use of the premium chat styles, DeepSqueak and LongSqueak, plus no ads and no slow mode. You don't pay for messages, though. Character.ai's lite article says "Unlimited messaging stays on every plan, including free." This is the comparison table on the subscribe page, read 1 November 2026:

Lite's "daily taste" is a meter. You get a daily amount of DeepSqueak and LongSqueak messages, and when it runs out your chat moves to the free styles. Lite also keeps some of the ads. Its help page says it removes banner ads and shows "fewer interstitial ads", not none. Character.ai's older c.ai+ FAQ, still live, adds that c.ai+ messages generate "approx. 2-3x faster" and skip the waiting room.

Two things don't change when you pay. The first is that you get voice for free on all of the plans: the voice FAQ says "Character Voice is available for free to all users." The second is that the content filter is the same on each of them. Character.ai's NSFW article says "Pornographic content is against our terms of service, and will not be supported at any point in the future."

Is c.ai+ worth it?

c.ai+ is worth $9.99 a month if you use DeepSqueak or LongSqueak every day and hit slow mode at busy hours. If that isn't you, the free plan is enough. Free keeps unlimited messages and voice calls, so you're paying for better styles and memory, not for access.

Try lite first if a daily taste of the premium styles covers your evenings. It's $4.99 a month. Pick the monthly lite plan, never the weekly one. If you run out of premium messages most days, move up to c.ai+.

Don't buy the yearly plan right now. It costs $94.99 up front, and it only beats monthly after 9.5 months. Character.ai's own sale timetable runs to early December 2026, and its offer terms say "No partial refunds are issued for unused time within a billing period." Monthly c.ai+ caps what you can lose at $9.99. The reasons people give for dropping paid chatbots are in why people cancel AI subscriptions.

Is it safe to pay for Character AI during the Chapter 11 sale?

Paying for one month at a time is low risk, since Character.ai says "your subscriptions remain active, and billing is unchanged for now." The longer term isn't settled. Character.ai filed for Chapter 11 on 12 October 2026 to run a court-supervised sale, and its post says: "If such a bid is unavailable, however, the platform will be wound down."

The case is Character Technologies, Inc., No. 26-11603 (BLS), in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The claims agent's case page, read 1 November 2026, lists a bidding procedures hearing on 30 October and a meeting of creditors on 19 November. On 2 November it still showed no bid deadline or auction date. Character.ai expects the sale to be "complete by the end of November or perhaps early December 2026". TechCrunch reported on 13 October that Character.ai agreed to sell some assets to Disney for $20 million, plus a non-exclusive perpetual license to its technology. Character.ai says it'll tell subscribers in advance if paid features change.

Ask for your data export today, whether or not you pay. Character.ai's download help page says "exports can take 3-4 weeks to process", and the download link works for only 7 days. So a request made in the first week of November lands in the same window Character.ai gives for the sale to close. Where to go if the app does close is on our Character AI alternatives page.

How do you cancel a Character AI subscription?

You cancel a Character AI subscription where you bought it: in Character.ai's Customer Portal for a web plan, or in Apple's or Google's subscription settings for an app plan. Your plan stays active until the end of the period you've paid for. These steps come from Character.ai's cancel help page and its offer terms, read 1 November 2026:

  1. On the web, open Settings, then Account, then Manage. If it says an app store manages your plan, use step 3 or 4 instead.
  2. Click Manage, enter your account email, and open the "Log in to your Customer Portal" link Character.ai emails you. Cancel there.
  3. On an iPhone, open the Settings app, tap your Apple ID, then Subscriptions, then Character AI, and cancel.
  4. On Android, open play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions, pick Character AI, and cancel.

Whoever took your money handles the refund. Apple and Google handle refunds for app purchases. For a web plan paid through Stripe, Character.ai's lite FAQ says to open a ticket on its support site and choose "Payments and purchases". Our AI subscription refunds guide covers Apple's and Google's request forms.

Can Whizi replace a c.ai+ subscription?

Whizi can't replace c.ai+ for most roleplayers, because it's a general chat app with no character library. Whizi, which publishes this page, has no community bots and no character voices. Its voice mode uses one preset voice. It can't import a Character.ai export either, only ChatGPT and Claude chats. And its free plan gives 10 messages a day, against unlimited on Character.ai. It's a fit if you write your own character. A Whizi project holds up to 32,000 characters of instructions and 10 pinned files, and sends them with every message. Starter is $15.99 a month with Claude Haiku. Pro is $29.99 with Claude Opus and Claude Sonnet. Credits per message vary by model, and the pricing page has the current rates.

Workflow checklist
  • Start on the free plan, which keeps unlimited messaging and free voice calls
  • Pick lite monthly at $4.99 if a daily taste of DeepSqueak and LongSqueak is enough, and skip lite weekly
  • Pay for c.ai+ monthly at $9.99 rather than $94.99 a year until the Chapter 11 sale result is known
  • Request your data export now, since Character.ai says it takes 3 to 4 weeks
  • Cancel in the place you paid: the Customer Portal for web, Apple or Google for the apps
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Character AI free?

Yes. Character AI's free plan includes unlimited messaging, the PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak chat styles, 15 pinned memories and free character voice, as of November 2026. It shows ads and has slow mode at busy times. Paying for lite or c.ai+ cuts both.

Does c.ai+ remove the NSFW filter?

No. Character.ai applies the same content rules on every plan, and its help center says "Pornographic content is against our terms of service, and will not be supported at any point in the future." What you buy with c.ai+ is the premium chat styles, more memory and no ads. It doesn't loosen the filter.

Is there a Character AI free trial?

No free trial is listed on Character.ai's subscribe page or help center as of November 2026. Its offer terms describe paid intro deals instead: $14.99 for the first 3 months of c.ai+, or $59.99 for the first year, for new and returning subscribers when checkout shows them.

Can I get a refund for c.ai+?

Only through the store you paid, and not for part of a month. Character.ai's offer terms say "No partial refunds are issued for unused time within a billing period." Apple and Google decide app refunds. For a web plan, open a "Payments and purchases" ticket on Character.ai's support site.
