Character AI alternatives: 6 picks after the Chapter 11 filing

In brief

The best Character AI alternative is Talkie ($9.99 a month) for a feed of ready characters, Kindroid ($15.99) for one lasting companion, AI Dungeon ($9.99) for story games, or Whizi if you write your own characters for Claude Opus and GPT. Character.ai filed for Chapter 11 on 12 October 2026, and the app still runs.

Which Character AI alternative fits what you used it for?

Pick the alternative by the job Character AI did for you, because the apps below are built for different jobs. If you write your own character and want frontier models, start with Whizi. One project keeps the character sheet on every message, and the same plan runs Claude Opus and ChatGPT Sol, where Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus gives you one lab each. We read every price from each app's US App Store listing on 31 October 2026, apart from Claude and ChatGPT, which we read from Anthropic's and OpenAI's own pages.

Two rows need a note. Talkie's iPhone app is listed as Talkie Lab, and its plain "1 Month" and "1 Year" subscriptions sit next to a separate Talkie+ Pro at $24.99. Kindroid also sells add ons: one more Kindroid slot costs $3.49, and 100 selfie credits cost $11.49. If the yearly plan is your plan, Talkie is the cheapest here at $49.99 a year, about $4.17 a month.

If you came from Character AI for long stories and lore, see our Janitor AI alternatives page, which covers context limits. For apps with community bots on top of frontier models, Poe is the one to compare.

Is Character AI shutting down?

No, not as of 31 October 2026, but it might. Character.ai filed for Chapter 11 on 12 October 2026 "to facilitate a court-supervised sale of the company". The same post says what happens if nobody buys it: "If such a bid is unavailable, however, the platform will be wound down."

Character.ai filed for Chapter 11 and expects a sale by December

Character.ai expects the sale to finish "by the end of November or perhaps early December 2026". Until then, the post says, "your subscriptions remain active, and billing is unchanged for now." That's a month or so of runway, not a promise. So export your data now. The same post says you can "export your data through the app or the Character.ai website", and that's the one step that keeps your chats safe whatever the court decides.

The filing came after a year of change. On 29 October 2025, Character.ai said it would remove open ended chat for users under 18 "no later than November 25". On 18 September 2026 its CEO, Karandeep Anand, left to join Disney as chief technology officer. Disney came back into the story with the filing: TechCrunch reported on 13 October that Character.ai had agreed to sell some of its assets to Disney for $20 million. Ten days after Anand left, the company launched a cheaper plan, (c.ai) lite, at $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week.

Can Whizi replace Character AI?

Whizi replaces Character AI only if you write your own character. It isn't a character marketplace. There's no library of community bots, no character avatars and no feed to browse. What it does have is a place to keep a character sheet and the strongest models to run it on.

Here's how that works. A Whizi project holds up to 32,000 characters of instructions and up to 10 pinned files, and both ride along on every message in every chat inside it. So you can paste a character's personality, voice and backstory into the instructions, pin the lore as a file, and start as many chats as you like with that character. Your chats stay saved until you delete them. Then you pick the model: Claude Haiku 5.5 at 1 credit a message, Claude Sonnet 5 at 10, or Claude Opus at 20.

The cost case is about stacking. If you pay for c.ai+ ($9.99) and ChatGPT Plus ($20) today, that's $29.99 a month for two apps. Whizi Pro is $29.99 a month for 2,500 credits, and it covers Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet, ChatGPT Sol, Kimi K3, Grok and the DeepSeek line. It adds 100 pictures a month and side by side chats with two models on one prompt. One plan does your character and your homework, email and code too.

Now the losses, plainly. Whizi can't import your Character.ai chats: its importer takes ChatGPT and Claude exports only. Whizi's voice mode has one preset voice, so there are no character voices. And the free plan gives 10 messages a day, which is one short scene, not an evening.

When does staying on Character AI win?

Staying wins if you chat with many characters other people made. No alternative here matches the size of that library, and you can't move a community character to another app. It also wins on price for heavy free use. Character.ai's September post says "Unlimited messaging stays on every tier", free included. Talkie and Kindroid don't say that on their listings.

Stay, and export your data this week. Then watch for the sale result in early December. If a buyer keeps the app running, you've lost nothing. If the platform winds down, you'll have your chats and a list of where to go next.

Under 18? Character.ai removed open ended chat for you in November 2025. Most apps on this page are rated 18+ on the App Store too, and AI Dungeon is rated 13+.

Workflow checklist
  • Export your Character.ai data from the app or website before the sale closes
  • Write down the two or three characters you actually talk to each week
  • If you want ready made characters, start with Talkie or Kindroid on a monthly plan
  • If you want story games, try AI Dungeon's Adventurer plan at $9.99
  • If you write your own characters, paste one character sheet into a Whizi project and run it on Claude Sonnet
  • Cancel c.ai+ through the App Store or Google Play if you subscribed there
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free Character AI alternative?

Character AI's own free plan is still the best free option as of October 2026, because Character.ai says unlimited messaging stays on every tier. If you're leaving, Claude and ChatGPT both have free plans, and Whizi's free plan gives 10 messages a day on Whizi AI, Auto and Claude Haiku 5.5.

Can I export my Character AI chats?

Yes. Character.ai's Chapter 11 post of 12 October 2026 says you can export your data through the app or the Character.ai website. Do it before the sale closes. Other apps can't import that export: Whizi, for one, imports only ChatGPT and Claude chats.

How much does c.ai+ cost?

c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year on the US App Store, read on 31 October 2026. The (c.ai) lite plan costs $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week. Character.ai says prices vary by region, and that subscriptions stay active during the Chapter 11 sale.

Can people under 18 still use Character AI?

Not for open ended chat. Character.ai removed it for users under 18 by 25 November 2025 and uses age checks from Persona alongside its own model. Teens can still use features like stories and videos with characters, per Character.ai's October 2025 post.
