Janitor AI alternatives: 6 picks for bots that remember more

In brief

The best Janitor AI alternative is SillyTavern with OpenRouter if you want your own keys, Character AI ($9.99 a month) for a bigger bot library, or Whizi for Claude Opus and Sonnet with no proxy setup. Janitor's free model reads about 9k tokens of context, and Janitor+ costs $12.99 a month.

Which Janitor AI alternative fits why you're leaving?

Match the alternative to your reason for leaving: the bot forgets, the proxy keeps breaking, or you want a bigger library. Janitor's help center says the free tier gives "Unlimited chats with millions of bots" with a "Context limit of around 9k tokens". We read every price below at its source on 31 October 2026, in US dollars.

The SillyTavern row is the power user's route. Its own GitHub page calls it an "LLM Frontend for Power Users". OpenRouter's free plan allows 50 requests a day on its free models. Its paid plan bills per token with a 5.5% platform fee. Janitor's own help center keeps an OpenRouter error guide for exactly this proxy setup. SillyTavern gives you the same pipe without Janitor's bot library. We compare OpenRouter with flat plans on our OpenRouter alternatives page.

Is Janitor AI free?

Yes. Janitor AI is free, and its help center says "We will always keep a free option available for everyone." The free tier runs on JLLM, Janitor's own model. The paid tier, Janitor+, costs $12.99 a month or $99 a year on the App Store. It adds "5x more context for better memory", priority access and "Monthly swipes with our best models".

Janitor+ drops from $12.99 to $8.25 a month on the yearly plan

Billed yearly, Janitor+ is 36% cheaper than paying monthly. We did that math from the App Store prices: $99 a year against $155.88 for twelve months. Two catches. Janitor says subscriptions are "generally non-refundable". And an App Store plan can't be cancelled on the web, so cancel it in the store you bought it from.

Janitor+ also unlocks Janitor+ Router, which runs third party models inside Janitor with no proxy. It's web only, it bills "per token, at the rates displayed for each model", and you top up a wallet first. So the real Janitor+ bill is $12.99 plus whatever the wallet spends.

Why does Janitor AI forget, and what remembers more?

Janitor AI forgets because JLLM can only read about 8k to 9k tokens at once. Janitor's own memory guide puts it plainly: "If you overload it, stuff gets pushed out of memory or starts degrading." The bot's personality, your chat memory and your recent messages all share that space.

You have three ways out. Janitor+ gives five times the context, so roughly 45k tokens. A proxy or Router lets you pick a model with a far bigger window, paid per token. Or you move the character somewhere that keeps the sheet outside the chat.

That last one is how Whizi works. A Whizi project holds up to 32,000 characters of instructions and up to 10 pinned files, and Whizi adds both to every message in every chat in that project. So the character sheet and the lore never scroll out. They're sent each time, and they run on whichever model you pick.

Where does Whizi beat Janitor AI, and where does it lose?

Whizi wins on setup and on knowing the price before you send. There's no proxy, no API key and no wallet. Whizi Pro is $29.99 a month for 2,500 credits, and every model has one fixed credit cost per message: Claude Haiku 5.5 is 1 credit, Claude Sonnet 5 is 10 and Claude Opus is 20. You know the price of a message before you send it, which a per token Router bill can't tell you.

The same plan covers ChatGPT Sol, Kimi K3, Grok and the DeepSeek line, 100 pictures a month, and side by side chats with two models on one prompt. If you use AI for school or work as well, that's one bill instead of Janitor+ plus a ChatGPT or Claude plan.

Whizi loses on three things that matter to Janitor fans. It has no bot library at all, so you write every character yourself. Its free plan gives 10 messages a day, against Janitor's unlimited free chats. And it doesn't take your own API keys, so if you like tuning a proxy, Whizi will feel locked down.

When does staying on Janitor AI win?

Staying wins if you chat for hours on community bots and pay nothing. No paid app here beats free and unlimited on volume. It also wins if you already run a cheap proxy that works: you get Janitor's library and your own model, and SillyTavern only adds setup.

Try Janitor+ for one month before you switch apps. If the 5x context fixes the forgetting, $12.99 costs less than a $20 Claude or ChatGPT plan. Leave when you want a stronger model with no keys, or one app for all your AI.

Workflow checklist
  • Note why you're leaving: memory, proxy errors, or a smaller library
  • If memory is the problem, try one month of Janitor+ and its 5x context first
  • If proxies are the problem, compare Janitor+ Router per token rates with a flat plan
  • If you want full control, install SillyTavern and add an OpenRouter key
  • If you write your own characters, put one character sheet in a Whizi project and test it on Claude Sonnet
  • Cancel an App Store or Google Play plan in that store, not on the web
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Janitor AI free?

Yes. Janitor AI's free tier gives unlimited chats with millions of bots on standard chat models, with a context limit of around 9k tokens, per its help center on 31 October 2026. Janitor says it will always keep a free option. Janitor+ costs $12.99 a month or $99 a year.

Is there a Janitor AI alternative without a proxy?

Yes. Character AI, Talkie and Kindroid all work with no setup, and Whizi runs Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet and ChatGPT Sol with no API key. Inside Janitor itself, Janitor+ Router runs third party models without a proxy, billed per token, on the web only.

Can I use my own API key with Whizi?

No. Whizi includes the models in the plan and charges a fixed number of credits per message, so there's no key to paste or wallet to fund. If bringing your own key is the point, SillyTavern with OpenRouter is the better fit.
