Which Chai AI alternative should you pick?

Pick by what you want the bot to be: one of many characters, one companion, a story game, or a model you set up yourself. Chai doesn't publish its subscription prices on its website, and its Safety Center says "In some regions, use of the service requires a paid subscription." We read every other price below from US App Store listings on 31 October 2026.

Two rows need context. Character AI rates even lower than Chai on Google Play, at 2.2 stars, though its iPhone app rates 4.3. How does Chai rate against other character apps?

Chai rates 2.4 stars on Google Play, second lowest of the seven character apps we checked on 31 October 2026. Five of them sit between 3.8 and 4.5. We read each app's Google Play page in the US store that day.

Big apps don't always rate low. Talkie has more reviews than Chai, 863K, and rates 4.5. Chai's listing says it "Contains ads" and has in-app purchases, and it's rated Mature 17+ on Google Play. Chai's own site goes further: it says Chai is "strictly for adults" and checks age with Persona, using a government photo ID.

Then there's the iPhone. Chai's website still links to an App Store listing, but that link returned "not found" on 31 October 2026. Apple's own lookup for the same app ID came back empty in the US, UK, Canadian and Australian stores. On an iPhone today, you'd use one of the alternatives above.

What are Chai's models trained to do?

Chai trains its own models to keep you chatting. That's not our reading, it's Chai's. Its company page lists each model upgrade since 2023. In June 2023 it used reinforcement learning "to decrease the probability a chat session ends". In December 2025 it began training larger Mixture-of-Experts models "with the goal of increasing user revenue and screentime".

Chai says it serves "hundreds of in-house trained LLMs" and has more than 10M active users. That's a real engineering feat, and it explains why Chai's bots feel tuned for long, sticky sessions. It also means you can't pick the model. You get Chai's blend.

The frontier models work the other way round. You pick Claude or GPT, give it your own instructions, and it follows them. If you want a character that stays in its lane rather than one tuned to keep you on the app, that's the trade to weigh.
