Best AI app for work in 2026: 9 apps ranked on models, side by side chats and real files

In brief

Whizi is the best AI app for work if you switch models by task. Its $29.99 Pro plan reaches Claude Opus, GPT and Gemini, runs two models side by side and returns spreadsheets, documents and decks as files on whizi.io. Poe comes second on our five checks. Copilot wins inside Microsoft 365, Gemini inside Google Workspace.

Which AI app is best for work? Whizi, the one app to pass all five checks

We scored each app's best plan at $30 a month or less on five checks (Claude Opus, a GPT model, a Gemini model, side by side model chats, and spreadsheets, documents and decks back as files), and ties go to the app with more US App Store ratings. Whizi passes all five. Poe passes four, and no other app passes more than three.

Only two of the nine reach Claude Opus, GPT and Gemini on one plan at $30 a month or less: Whizi Pro and Poe. Perplexity Pro comes close. Its model list, a snapshot dated 17 October 2026, gives Pro GPT, Claude Sonnet, Gemini, Grok and Kimi models, but Claude Opus is on Max, which costs $200 in the App Store. Its Model Council, which runs one question through three models, is also "available now for Perplexity Max subscribers on the web."

Most of the apps now pass on files. Perplexity's asset guide of 9 April 2026 lists XLSX, DOCX, PPTX and PDF for every Pro user. Gemini makes Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, plus .docx, .xlsx and PDF. ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Grok can make all three kinds of file as well. Poe and DeepSeek are the two that don't document any of them.

This page ranks general AI assistants, not single-job tools like Otter.ai, Notion AI, Grammarly or Motion. You'd run any of those next to the app you pick here.

How do 9 AI apps for work compare on models, files and price?

Whizi Pro passes every check at $29.99 a month, Poe misses only on files at $199.99 a year, and Copilot and Perplexity each pass three of the five. In the grid below, we score the best plan that each app sells at $30 a month or less, with US prices as of October 2026:

We had to break three ties, and we did it with App Store ratings. Copilot had 1,351,749 US ratings on 11 October 2026, and Perplexity had 514,014. ChatGPT had 11,187,768, Gemini had 2,331,630 and Claude had 277,600, so they rank in that order.

Two of the checks that Whizi passes are met in full on its website only. Side by side model chats run on whizi.io alone, and the mobile app shares a spreadsheet as .xlsx and a document as .docx but makes no slide decks. Copilot and Gemini win at something this grid doesn't score: they write inside the apps that your company already runs.

Which AI app is best for your kind of work?

Whizi is best if you switch models by task, Poe if you want many models on the cheapest plan, Copilot if your company runs on Microsoft 365, and ChatGPT if you work in Excel and Word. Each app's pick and losing case come from the vendor's own pages:

Whizi, which publishes this page, is the newest app on the list and loses on every trust signal. It went live on 26 August 2026 and had 3 US ratings on 11 October. It has no team plan or shared billing, and no Office add-in, so it can't write inside a Word file you have open. There's no iPad version, widget or Siri action. Files you attach in the app are capped at 10 MB each. Side by side model chats, slide decks and PDF forms filled in place all run on whizi.io, not in the app. The free tier is thin: text only, on Whizi AI and Auto, with 7 messages on day one and 3 a day after that. What it does differently is reach several model families from one account, out of a catalog of 280+ models. Pro at $29.99 a month adds Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet and ChatGPT Sol, and credits per message vary by model and can change. It's on iPhone, Android and the web.

On whizi.io, side by side model chats send one prompt to two models, so you see which one writes your report better. File cards turn a request into a real .xlsx with live formulas, or a .docx, .pptx or PDF. You can also switch models in the middle of a chat when the task changes.

Should you use Copilot or Gemini if your company already pays for it? Yes, inside its own apps

Yes. If your employer licenses Microsoft 365 Copilot or Gemini for Workspace, use it first, because it writes inside the document, sheet or inbox you already have open. No app you buy yourself can do that with your company's files.

Copilot is the stronger case. Microsoft's business page lists Copilot Business at $21 a user a month on a yearly plan, cut to $18 from 1 July to 31 December 2026, or $25.20 billed monthly. It's "available only to existing Microsoft 365 customers with an eligible Business plan," so you can't buy it alone. On 22 September 2026, Microsoft said Claude Opus and GPT models were rolling out "across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Chat, Cowork, and Copilot Studio." Its announcement adds that "Availability may vary by license, access, and region."

Gemini wins if your mail is Gmail. Google's Workspace pricing page lists "Gemini AI assistant in Gmail, Docs, Meet, and more" on Business Standard as of October 2026. Google's Workspace post of 27 April 2026 says Gemini makes Docs, Sheets and Slides, though "Gemini currently supports generating one file per prompt."

Ask IT before you paste client files into any app your company doesn't license. DeepSeek is the clearest case. Its privacy policy, last updated 10 February 2026, says it will "collect, process and store your Personal Data in People's Republic of China."

What is the best free AI app for productivity? ChatGPT, with Claude for files

ChatGPT is the best free AI app for productivity. OpenAI's pricing page lists "Unlimited text chats" on Free as of October 2026, and the Excel, Word and PowerPoint add-ins work on Free with limited use. ChatGPT Work, which makes files outside Office, is limited to the desktop app on Free.

Claude is the better free pick when the job ends in a file. Anthropic's help article says file creation "is available to all Claude users (Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise)." Switch on Code execution and file creation under Settings, then Capabilities. Gemini also makes files for free, and Google's launch post of 29 April 2026 says it's "now available to all Gemini app users globally."

Whizi's free tier won't carry a working day. You get 7 messages on day one and 3 a day after that, on Whizi AI and Auto. Our ChatGPT free vs paid breakdown shows what each ChatGPT plan adds.

Workflow checklist
  • Check what your employer already licenses before you pay for an app yourself
  • Ask IT whether client files may go into an outside AI app
  • Name the file type in your request: .xlsx, .docx, .pptx or PDF
  • Click a total in every generated sheet to confirm it holds a formula
  • Run one real task through two models side by side before you pick one
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT or Copilot better for work?

ChatGPT is better as an app you pick and pay for yourself, and Copilot is better inside Microsoft 365. ChatGPT's Excel, Word and PowerPoint add-ins run on every plan, Free included. Copilot writes in the file you have open and is getting Claude Opus, but your employer buys its work version, at $21 a user a month on top of Microsoft 365. Copilot vs ChatGPT goes deeper.

Is there one AI app with ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini for work?

Yes. Whizi Pro at $29.99 a month and Poe from $49.99 a year both reach Claude Opus, GPT and Gemini as of October 2026. Perplexity Pro at $20 reaches GPT, Claude Sonnet and Gemini, with Claude Opus on its $200 Max plan. Our all in one AI platforms comparison covers more options.

Can an AI app fill in a PDF form?

Yes. Attach a form on whizi.io and Whizi fills the same file, scans and photos included, then offers it back as a download. The mobile app doesn't do this yet. Chat with a PDF explains how Whizi reads PDFs.

What is the best AI app for spreadsheets at work?

ChatGPT, if you work in Excel, because its add-in builds and edits sheets inside Excel on every plan.
