How to delete Gemini history, and the 9 things Google keeps after you do

In brief

To delete Gemini history, go to gemini.google.com, click Settings & help, then Activity, then Delete and All time. In the app, tap your profile picture, then Gemini Apps Activity. As of October 2026, Google's help pages name 9 kinds of data that this leaves behind, including chats a reviewer read, which Google keeps up to 3 years.

How do you delete all your Gemini history at once?

You delete all of it on the Gemini Apps Activity page, which Google's activity help page reaches from every device. The chat list in the sidebar only deletes one chat at a time. Here's each route as Google documents it in October 2026:

You're onWhere to goThen
Computergemini.google.com, Settings & help, ActivityDelete, then All time

Any browsermyactivity.google.com/product/geminiDelete, then All time
One chat, any deviceThe chat in Recent: More, then Delete (press and hold it on a phone)It leaves Activity too

The same Delete menu offers Last hour, Last day and Custom range. Next to each day there's a delete for that day, and next to each entry a delete for that one item. Google says the removal starts at once. In its words, "we aim to immediately remove it from view," and a second process then clears its storage systems.

Want a copy first? Get it before you press Delete. Google's download page sends you to takeout.google.com, where you click Deselect all, tick My Activity and keep only Gemini Apps. The emailed link works for 7 days. A download doesn't delete anything from Google's servers.

A bulk delete extension such as Gemini Bulk Delete, on the Chrome Web Store, lets you select several chats in the sidebar and delete them together. It runs inside gemini.google.com, so it can read your chats. Custom range on the Activity page clears a whole period without one.

Does deleting Gemini history delete it permanently?

No, not all of it. As of 18 October 2026, Google's Gemini help pages name 9 kinds of data that deleting your Gemini Apps Activity leaves in place. Human review is the big one. Google's Privacy Hub, updated 13 October 2026, says chats a reviewer read "are not deleted when you delete your activity." Google keeps them for up to three years, cut off from your account.

The clock on everything else is Google's general one, not a Gemini rule. Google's retention page says full deletion "generally takes around 2 months," and that often includes a recovery period of up to a month. Encrypted backups can hold data for up to 6 months. Google also keeps some data longer for security, fraud prevention or financial records.

How do you delete one Gemini chat on iPhone or Android?

On a phone, open the Gemini app, tap Menu, then press and hold the chat under Recent and choose Delete. On a computer, hover over the chat in the side panel, click More, then Delete. Google's recent chats page says a chat deleted there is "also deleted from Gemini Apps Activity," so you don't clear it twice.

One delete reaches past the text. Google says it also removes anything made in that chat, like Canvas docs and apps. Branches don't follow. Deleting a branched chat leaves the original, and deleting the original leaves the branch.

Gemini Live chats carry more than words. When you delete one from Activity, Google deletes its audio, transcript, video and screenshares with it. Gemini inside Google Messages is the odd one out: Google points you to Messages to delete that chat.

How do you stop Gemini from saving your history?

You stop it by turning off Keep Activity on the same page. Click On, then Turn off, or Turn off and delete activity to clear the past in the same step. Google turns Keep Activity on by default for anyone 18 or over.

Off still isn't zero. Google keeps your conversations "for up to 72 hours" so it can answer you and process feedback, and they won't show in your activity. With Keep Activity off and no feedback sent, Google says it doesn't use your future chats to improve its AI models. Gems you create are still saved. Chats with them aren't.

Want history, just less of it? Change auto delete from Google's default of 18 months to 3 or 36 months, or pick Don't auto-delete activity to keep it all. For one private question, a temporary chat stays out of your activity and your recent chats, though Google still holds it for 72 hours.

Audio has its own switch: Improve Google services with your audio and Gemini Live videos & screenshares. Google ships it off. It only works while Keep Activity is on.

Why can't you delete Gemini chats on a work or school account?

Your Google Workspace administrator controls Gemini history on a work or school account, and Google's recent chats page says those users "can't delete chats." Keep Activity starts on there, and only the admin can turn it off, per Google's work and school page.

The admin's defaults match the personal ones. Google saves conversation history for 18 months, and the admin can switch that to 3 or 36 months or turn history off. You won't see the period, only a note that your admin manages it. Clearing Gemini history from inside a Workspace app doesn't touch Gemini Apps Activity either. Ask the admin.

What should you clear after deleting Gemini history?

Clear your shared links and your Gems, because deleting history leaves both. On gemini.google.com, click Settings & help, then Your public links, then Delete all links. Anyone who opens a dead link is told the chat no longer exists. A post on another site that carries the link stays up until you delete it there.

Gems sit in the Gems manager, and Google is changing them. From November 2026, Gems on personal accounts go away and turn into skills, per Google's Gems page. If a Gem holds something private, delete it there.

Saved info is a third store. The Privacy Hub says your instructions stay saved until you choose to delete them, so check that list too if Gemini tailors answers to you.

Whizi, which publishes this page, runs Gemini models next to GPT and Claude, and its deletion rules fit in two lines. Chats stay until you delete them or the account, and a deleted record can sit in database recovery history for up to 30 days. Whizi doesn't use your conversations to train Whizi-owned models. Where it loses: each model provider keeps its own retention rules, and Whizi makes no zero retention promise (data and privacy).

Workflow checklist
  • Download a copy at takeout.google.com first if you want one; the link lasts 7 days
  • Delete all time in Gemini Apps Activity (Settings & help, then Activity)
  • Turn Keep Activity off, or set auto delete to 3 months
  • Delete all public links under Settings & help, then Your public links
  • Delete any Gem that holds something private
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete Gemini history without deleting my Google account?

Yes. Gemini has no separate account, and your history is Gemini Apps Activity inside your Google account, so deleting it leaves Gmail, Drive and everything else alone. How to delete your Gemini account covers what to do if you want Gemini gone entirely.

Does deleting Gemini history cancel Google AI Pro?

No. Deleting activity changes nothing about billing. A Google AI plan is a Google One membership, and you cancel it from Google One, not from Gemini Apps Activity. How to cancel Google AI Pro has the steps and what happens to your storage.

Can I get deleted Gemini chats back?

No. Google's activity and recent chats help pages give no restore step. Its retention page mentions a recovery period of up to a month, but that's Google's safeguard against mistakes, not a button you can press. Export at takeout.google.com before you delete. Clearing ChatGPT too? How to delete your ChatGPT account covers what OpenAI keeps.

Does Google use my Gemini chats to train its AI?

Yes, while Keep Activity is on. The Privacy Hub says Google uses your activity to improve its services, including training generative AI models, with help from human reviewers. Turn Keep Activity off and send no feedback, and Google says your future chats won't be used. What never to paste into AI lists what to keep out of any chatbot.
