How to delete Claude chats, one or all at once, and the memory they leave behind

In brief

To delete Claude chats, open Chats and tasks on claude.ai, click the ⋮ button beside a chat and choose Delete, or choose Select, then Select all, to delete every chat at once. Anthropic removes them from your history immediately and from its systems within 30 days. Memories Claude saved from those chats stay until you delete them separately.

What does deleting a Claude chat actually remove?

Deleting a Claude chat removes it from your history at once and from Anthropic's back end within 30 days. That's the copy you see. Other copies follow their own rules. As of October 2026, Anthropic's help pages put the normal deletion window for a Claude chat at 30 days, and name four records that outlast it: memory entries saved from the chat, feedback you sent on it (5 years), a flagged chat's inputs and outputs (up to 2 years) and its safety classifier scores (up to 7 years).

How do I delete one Claude chat?

You delete one Claude chat from the ⋮ button beside it on the web, or with a long press on iPhone. Anthropic's delete or rename page, updated 10 August 2026, gives these steps for each app:

Where you areSteps to delete one chat
claude.ai in a browserFind the chat in the sidebar or in Chats and tasks, hover, click ⋮, choose Delete, then Delete again
Claude for iOSTouch and hold the chat in your chat list, tap Delete, then Delete again. Or open it, tap ⋯ at the top right, tap Delete and confirm
Claude for AndroidOpen the chat, tap ⋮ at the top right, tap Delete, then Delete again

The same menu holds Rename. Use it if you only want a chat to stop showing an awkward title. Anthropic's page shows no restore step after the second Delete, so read the title before you confirm.

A chat inside a project deletes the same way. The project itself doesn't. Anthropic keeps projects "until you delete it or delete your account", and you delete one from the ⋯ menu on the Projects page, then Yes, delete. An archived project can't be deleted at all until you unarchive it.

How do I delete all my Claude chats at once?

You delete all your Claude chats at once from Chats and tasks on claude.ai: click ⋮ on any chat, click Select, then Select all, then Delete twice. There's no separate clear history switch. The steps:

  1. Click Chats and tasks in the left sidebar.
  2. Hover over any conversation and click ⋮.
  3. Click Select.
  4. Tick the chats you want gone, or click Select all at the top.
  5. Click Delete, then Delete again in the confirmation prompt.

On Android, open your chat list and tap the checklist icon at the top right. Tick each chat, tap the trash icon, then Delete. Anthropic's page lists no way to pick several chats on iPhone. If you're on an iPhone with a long history, open claude.ai in Safari and use Select all there.

Chrome extensions that promise a one click wipe exist. They need to read your Claude account to work, and Select all already does the job. To remove every chat and everything else with them, Anthropic's answer is to delete the whole account, which is permanent (how to delete your Claude account covers the cancel first rule).

Does deleting a Claude chat delete its memory?

No. Deleting a Claude chat leaves every memory Claude saved from it in place. Anthropic's memory page, updated 14 October 2026, says it plainly: "When a conversation expires or is deleted, related memory entries generated from it won't be removed, but you can delete individual memories at any time."

Memory is on by default for Free, Pro and Max accounts, so this applies to most people. Claude saves memory as topics while you chat, not as a summary after. So a detail can sit in memory minutes after you said it. To clear it:

  1. Open Settings, then Memory.
  2. Everything Claude remembers is listed under Topics.
  3. Select a topic and choose Delete to remove it, or the edit icon to change it.
  4. To wipe it all, turn off the memory toggle and pick Reset memory. That deletes every memory, project memories included, and Anthropic says it "cannot be undone".

Pause memory is the other choice behind that toggle. It keeps what's saved and stops Claude using it or adding more. You can also tell Claude in a chat to forget something, and the change applies from your next conversation.

Two settings stop the problem before it starts. An incognito chat, opened from the ghost icon at the top right of a new chat, isn't saved to your history or to memory. Anthropic still keeps it 30 days, and the ghost icon doesn't appear inside projects. Or turn off Memory in the + menu before your first message, and the chat stays in your list but adds nothing to memory.

Can Anthropic still use a Claude chat after you delete it?

Anthropic won't train future models on a chat you deleted, but it can keep some records of it for years. Its retention page says: "if you delete a chat from your chat history, it will not be used to train future models." Training runs already in progress, and models already trained, still include it.

The setting behind that sits in Settings, then Privacy, under Help Improve our AI models. With it on, Anthropic says it may keep de-identified chat data for up to 5 years in its training pipelines. Turn it off and it stops using your old and new chats in future runs. Incognito chats are never used for training, whatever the toggle says.

Three records sit outside the delete button. A thumbs up or down you sent keeps the data tied to it for 5 years. A chat that Anthropic's automated systems flag under its Usage Policy keeps its inputs and outputs for up to 2 years, and its trust and safety scores for up to 7. And Anthropic says it may keep chats "as required by law, to resolve disputes," or to fight policy abuse.

Shared links need their own step. A share link shows a snapshot of the chat to anyone who has it, and Anthropic's share page doesn't say that deleting the chat kills it. So unshare first: open Settings, then Privacy, click Manage next to Shared chats, and click Unshare beside each one. That works on Free, Pro and Max. Team and Enterprise chats can only be shared inside the organization anyway.

How do I delete Claude Code chat history?

Claude Code keeps its chats as files on your computer, so claude.ai's delete button never reaches them. Anthropic's session docs say transcripts live at ~/.claude/projects/, one JSONL file per session in a folder named after your working directory.

Claude Code deletes them on its own once they're 30 days old. That's the default for the cleanupPeriodDays setting in settings.json, and you can set it as low as 1 day. To clear one project sooner, run claude purge in that project. It deletes the transcripts and auto memory under projects/, prints its full plan first and asks you to confirm.

Two commands look like deletes and aren't. /clear starts a fresh conversation, but the docs say "Claude Code saves the previous session," and /resume brings it back. And claude rm <id> on a background session leaves its transcript on disk, where claude --resume can still open it.

Should you export Claude chats before deleting them?

Yes, if any of them might matter later, because Anthropic's help pages describe no way to restore a deleted chat. Export from Settings, then Privacy, then Export data, on the web or in Claude Desktop. The iPhone and Android apps can't run an export.

Anthropic emails a download link to your account address, and you must be signed in to use it. Its export page, updated 14 October 2026, says "The download link will expire 24 hours after delivery." If you miss it, ask again. The export holds your chats and, per the memory page, all your memory data.

The file can't be imported into another personal Claude account. Whizi, which publishes this page, imports it: under Settings, Account, Import Chats, pick the export's conversations.json or the .zip it sits in. Your browser reads the file and uploads only the chat text, and thinking blocks, tool calls and attachments are left out (how the Claude import works).

Workflow checklist
  • Export from Settings, Privacy, Export data first, and download within 24 hours
  • Unshare any shared chats under Settings, Privacy, Shared chats, Manage
  • Delete chats from Chats and tasks with Select, then Select all, then Delete twice
  • Delete the matching topics in Settings, Memory, or use Reset memory
  • Turn off Help Improve our AI models in Settings, Privacy if you don't want new chats used for training
  • For Claude Code, run claude purge in the project or lower cleanupPeriodDays
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover a deleted Claude chat?

No. Anthropic's help pages describe no restore step, and the chat leaves your history the moment you confirm. Its back end copy is gone within 30 days. Deleting the whole account is just as final, as how to delete your Claude account explains, so export first.

How do I delete Claude chats on iPhone?

Touch and hold a chat in your chat list, tap Delete, then Delete again. Inside an open chat, tap ⋯ at the top right instead. Anthropic's page lists no way to pick several chats at once on iOS, so use Select all on claude.ai in Safari. New to the app? How to use Claude walks through the rest of it.

Does deleting my Claude chats cancel my subscription?

No. Deleting chats leaves your account and its plan running, and Anthropic keeps your account information until you delete it or the account. Cancel in Settings, then Billing. If you're also taking your card off, how to remove your card from Claude has the steps.

Is deleting a Claude chat enough to protect something private I pasted?

Not on its own. Delete the chat, then delete any memory topic that holds the detail, because Anthropic doesn't remove those with the chat. Its back end copy can last up to 30 days, longer if the chat was flagged. For next time, an incognito chat skips history and memory. What never to paste into an AI chat lists what to keep out entirely.
