Claude Code pricing: $20 on Pro, $100 or $200 on Max, and about $13 a day on the API

English
In brief

Claude Code costs $20 a month on Claude Pro, $100 or $200 on Max, and $20 or $100 a seat on Team billed annually, as of October 2026. Free excludes it. On the API, Anthropic puts the enterprise average at about $13 per developer per active day, so the API passes Max 20x's price on the 16th active day.

How much does Claude Code cost on each plan?

Pro drops to $17 a month if you prepay $200 for the year, but Max is sold monthly only. Anthropic's pricing page says "Claude Code is included in all paid plans," so what changes from plan to plan is how much coding the price buys. We read every row below from that page and Anthropic's help center on 29 October 2026. Prices are in US dollars, before tax:

Every subscription row draws on one allowance that Claude Code shares with Claude chat. Anthropic's Pro and Max help page says both plans "have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit," and chats on claude.ai count against the same two. A long chat in the morning leaves less for the terminal. Anthropic doesn't print a prompt count for any plan. It sizes each one as a multiple of Pro. How the two windows reset, and what each limit message means, is in Claude Code usage limit.

Is the API cheaper than a Claude subscription for Claude Code?

The API is cheaper than a plan only in light months: under 2 active days against Pro, under 8 against Max 5x and under 16 against Max 20x, at an average pace. Anthropic's cost docs give the average: "Across enterprise deployments, the average cost is around $13 per developer per active day and $150-250 per developer per month, with costs remaining below $30 per active day for 90% of users." We drew that $13 day against each plan's flat price:

At $13 a day, the API passes Max 20x on day 16
06012018024030005101520active Claude Code days in a month, at Anthropic's $13 enterprise average (October 2026)US dollars a monthPro, $20Console API, $13 a dayMax 5x, $100Max 20x, $200

The API line crosses Pro at 1.5 active days, Max 5x at 7.7 and Max 20x at 15.4. Code on 20 days at the average rate and the API bill comes to $260. That's $60 more than Max 20x. Two caveats pull the other way. The $13 is an enterprise average, so a solo developer who stays on Sonnet may spend less. And each flat line is only a price. Anthropic doesn't say how many API dollars of work a plan's limits hold, so the chart shows where the prices cross, not whether a plan lasts that long.

Pick by how often you code. If you open Claude Code once or twice a month, an API key wins. If you code most weekdays, Max 20x is the plan that pays: it costs 10 times Pro and carries 20 times Pro's session allowance, so it halves the price per Pro sized session, to $10. Months with a few huge days and long quiet gaps favor the API, which has no weekly cap at all. Is Claude Max worth it runs the same math plan by plan.

What does Claude Code cost per token on the API?

On a Console API key, Claude Code bills at Anthropic's standard model rates, and Opus 5.5 costs twice what Sonnet 5.5 does per token. These are the rates per million tokens on the pricing page and in the fast mode docs, read on 29 October 2026:

ModelInputOutputCache read
Claude Sonnet 5.5$2$10$0.10
Claude Opus 5.5$4$20$0.20
Claude Opus 5.5, fast mode$8$40Not listed
Claude Haiku 5.5, prompts up to 100K tokens$0.10$0.50$0.01
Claude Fable 5.1$10$50$0.25

Watch the cache read column. In the sample /usage readout on Anthropic's cost page, 940,000 cache-read tokens cost about $0.28 of a $0.55 session on Sonnet 4.6. That's more than its input, output and cache writes put together. Claude Code resends your whole conversation with every request, and its cost docs say it re-reads that history "at the cached token rate." On Sonnet 5.5 that's $0.10 per million tokens, a twentieth of the $2 input price. Thinking is billed as output, and you can't switch it off on Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 or Haiku 5.5. Requests kept on US-only inference cost 1.1 times the list rate. Anthropic's docs say Sonnet "handles most coding tasks well and costs less than Opus." How much less per finished task is measured in Claude Sonnet vs Opus, and OpenAI's matching rates are in ChatGPT API vs Claude API pricing.

What does Claude Code cost after you hit your plan's limit?

Past the limit, Claude Code bills usage credits at standard API rates, and prepaid bundles cut that by up to 30%. Anthropic's Pro and Max help page says the extra usage "will be billed at standard API rates." Its usage bundles article lists three discounts:

Usage you getYou payDiscount
$50$4510%
$250$20020%
$1,000$70030%

Pro and Max subscribers can buy up to $2,000 of discounted bundles a month, and Team owners up to $3,000. One balance covers Claude Code, Claude chat and Cowork. The iPhone app sells all three at the same prices, and adds a $100 pack for $90 and a $500 pack for $350. Fast mode never touches your plan at all. The fast mode docs say that on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise it's "available via usage credits only," at $8 in and $40 out per million tokens on Opus 5.5.

Watch the API credits that come with Max and Team. Max 5x includes $100 a month and Max 20x $200, but the help page is blunt: "Monthly API credits included with Max plans can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps, including for usage credits." Anthropic's Team and Enterprise help page says the same of Team's pooled credits. They pay for your own API projects, not for Claude Code. If you'd rather wait than pay, Claude weekly limit shows when the allowance comes back.

How much does Claude Code cost for a team?

A Claude Team seat costs $20 or $100 a month billed annually, and every seat includes Claude Code. Anthropic's Team plan article gives a Standard seat 1.25x Pro's session allowance and a Premium seat 6.25x, and says the limits are "per-member, rather than applied to the team as a whole." Teams run from 2 to 150 seats. For 20 developers, here's what each route costs a month:

20 developers onMonthly costWhere usage stops
Team Standard, annual$4001.25x Pro per person per session, plus a weekly cap
Team Premium, annual$2,0006.25x Pro per person per session, plus a weekly cap
Team Premium, monthly$2,5006.25x Pro per person per session, plus a weekly cap
Enterprise, usage based, at Anthropic's averageAbout $3,400 to $5,400 ($400 in seats plus $150 to $250 per developer)No per-seat limit
Console API, at Anthropic's averageAbout $3,000 to $5,000No plan window

We built the last two rows from Anthropic's $150 to $250 monthly average. They're estimates. Your team's habits set the real bill. On these numbers, Team Premium is the cheaper fixed price, and Enterprise buys the removal of the per-seat wall. Code Review never comes out of a seat allowance. Its cost docs say it "has no flat per-review price" and bills through usage credits, for Team and Enterprise only. Set it to run after every push and the cost multiplies by the number of pushes. The seat-by-seat comparison with Pro is in Claude Team plan.

Which Claude Code plan should you buy?

Buy Pro at $20 if Claude Code is a few sessions a week, and Max 20x at $200 if you hit Pro's 5-hour wall most days. Max 5x is five Pro allowances for five Pro prices. It buys room, not a discount, as Claude Pro vs Claude Max shows. Take a Console API key if your months are uneven or Claude Code runs in CI, since the key has no weekly cap. And buy the plan on claude.com, not in the iPhone app. Apple's US App Store listing charged $124.99 for Max 5x and $249.99 for Max 20x on 29 October 2026, 25% above the web price. Pro cost $20 a month in both places, but the annual plan was $214.99 in the app against $200 on the web. If you're also weighing Google's agent, Claude vs Gemini for coding compares the two on cost per task.

Maybe you came here for Claude chat, not coding. Then a Claude Code plan can be more than you need. Whizi, which publishes this page, has no Claude Code and no API access. Its Pro plan, at $29.99 a month or $19.99 billed annually, puts Claude Opus and Sonnet next to ChatGPT and Gemini in one chat app, and credits per message vary by model. That's $9.99 more than Claude Pro, so it only wins if you'd otherwise pay for a second assistant. Claude pricing lists every Claude chat plan, and the cheapest way to use Claude and GPT compares the bundles.

Workflow checklist
  • Count your active coding days: under 2 a month, use a Console API key; most weekdays, price Max 20x
  • Run /status before blaming your plan: a set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY bills the key, not your subscription
  • Buy Max on claude.com, not in the iPhone app, where it costs 25% more
  • Prepay usage credits in a $250 or $1,000 bundle if you go past your limit every month
  • Keep Sonnet 5.5 as the default model; Opus 5.5 costs twice as much per token on the API
  • For a team, price Team Premium seats against Enterprise usage at $150 to $250 a developer
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Code free?

No. Claude Code isn't included in Claude's Free plan, so you need Pro at $20 a month or higher, or an API key that bills per token, as of October 2026. Anthropic's pricing page marks Claude Code as included only on paid plans. If you just want to try it, a Console API key lets you pay for a single day's use.

Is Claude Code included with Claude Pro?

Yes. Anthropic lists "Claude Code access" among Pro's benefits, at $20 a month or $200 a year. It shares Pro's 5-hour session and weekly limit with Claude chat, so heavy coding leaves less for chats. What Pro gets in practice is in Is Claude Pro worth it.

How much does Claude Code cost per month for one developer?

It costs $20 to $200 a month on a subscription, and about $150 to $250 a month on the API, by Anthropic's enterprise average of $13 per active day. Anthropic says 90% of users stay under $30 per active day. At that average, if you code on more than 15 days a month, Max 20x costs less than the API.

Can you use Max plan API credits in Claude Code?

No. Anthropic's help center says the monthly API credits that come with Max "can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps, including for usage credits." Team's pooled credits follow the same rule. Past your limit, Claude Code needs separate usage credits, billed at API rates or bought in bundles at up to 30% off.
