How to cancel ChatGPT Go, including free offers and UPI AutoPay

Where you cancel ChatGPT Go depends on who charges you

Uninstalling the ChatGPT app doesn't cancel anything, and a plan bought on chatgpt.com never shows up in your Apple or Google Play subscriptions. OpenAI can only cancel what OpenAI bills, so check your last receipt before you hunt for a button.

On the web, OpenAI's cancellation article gives the path as Settings, then Billing, then Cancel under Cancel plan. The Billing panel we opened on a paid account on 2 September 2026 matched it. OpenAI's own ChatGPT Go article still says Settings, then Account. If one label is missing on your screen, try the other.

The deadline is the same on every route. OpenAI says to cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date, and Apple sets the same 24 hours for a trial. Cancel the evening before renewal and you can still be charged.

Free Go offers turn into paid plans, and cancelling one can end it at once

As of October 2026, at least six free ChatGPT Go offers have run. OpenAI gave users in India a free year. Shopee announced two in five Southeast Asian markets, Rappi ran one in Latin America, and Revolut runs two. The first large wave of them turns paid in the next three months.

The dates in the chart are derived. A Revolut trial claimed on its first day, 30 July 2026, reaches its first billing date around 30 October. India's free years run 12 months from each person's own checkout, so they renew from early November 2026 until 21 January 2027. OpenAI's release notes date the end of India claims to 21 January 2026. The help page that once held India's promotion terms now opens OpenAI's general Go article instead.

Now the trap. OpenAI's Go promotions article says: "If it was a free promotion, your access may end immediately upon cancellation." A paid Go month runs to its end date when you cancel. A free one may not. The same article adds that a cancelled promo code can't be reused.

So time it. Cancel a free Go offer close to its end, after you've used the free months, and at least 24 hours before the first charge. Revolut's trial terms set that same 24 hour line, and they name OpenAI Ireland as the company that bills you, so you cancel in ChatGPT, not in the Revolut app.

How do you cancel ChatGPT Go autopay on UPI?

Cancel the plan in ChatGPT first, then cancel the mandate in your UPI app. A UPI AutoPay mandate is a standing permission held by your bank and your UPI app, not by ChatGPT. Cancelling the plan stops OpenAI asking for money. Cancelling the mandate removes its permission to take it.

Do it in that order. If you only cancel the mandate, ChatGPT still lists an active plan and still tries to charge at renewal, and the failed payment is a messier way to end it. If you only cancel the plan, the mandate can sit in your UPI app until you clear it.

The warning shot comes from your bank. Under UPI AutoPay, a pre-debit notice reaches you 24 hours before each charge, and Razorpay's UPI AutoPay FAQ says it gives you "the option to pause or cancel the e-mandate." If that message arrives for OpenAI, you have one day left.

Can you cancel ChatGPT Go anytime?

Yes. OpenAI's Go article says Go subscriptions "are billed automatically monthly, and can be canceled anytime." There is no annual Go plan to be locked into: OpenAI doesn't sell annual billing or prepaid months for Go, Plus or Pro.

On a paid month, cancelling stops the next charge and you keep Go until the period you paid for ends. Google Play states the same rule for store subscriptions. The free promotions in the section above are the one case where access can stop early.

Can you get a refund after cancelling ChatGPT Go?

Usually not. OpenAI's refund article, read on 18 October 2026, offers a discretionary refund for an unused individual subscription if you ask within seven days of the charge. It also says that "forgetting to cancel" doesn't qualify on its own.

Two regions get firm rules. In the EU, the UK and Turkey, cancelling within 14 days of purchase earns a prorated refund. In South Korea, a request within 7 days of purchase gets a full refund if you haven't used the service, and a prorated one if you have.

You ask through the chat widget at the bottom right of help.openai.com, signed in as the account that was charged. OpenAI quotes 5 to 7 business days for a web purchase and 10 for a Google Play one. Apple purchases are refunded by Apple, not OpenAI.

What do you lose when ChatGPT Go ends?

You lose Go's higher limits on image generation, file uploads and advanced data analysis, plus the longer memory the pricing page lists. Everyday text chat stays unlimited: OpenAI's Go article says Free and Go users both get it. That gap is what $8 a month buys in the US.

Why were you charged after cancelling ChatGPT Go?

A charge after cancelling usually means you cancelled too late, a second subscription exists, or you deleted the account in place of cancelling. OpenAI's cancellation article covers each one.

You cancelled inside the last 24 hours. The renewal had already started. Ask for a refund the same day, while the unused rule can still apply.

A second subscription exists. One ChatGPT account can be billed on the web while another is billed by Apple or Google. A chatgpt.com plan never shows in Apple or Play, so check all three.

You deleted the account instead of cancelling. Deleting cancels a plan billed by ChatGPT, but an Apple or Google Play plan keeps running until you cancel it in the store.

If you can't sign in, OpenAI Support can cancel a plan it bills. It asks for the account or billing email plus any two of these: the card's last four digits, its expiry date, the billing address, or the date of a recent charge. Never send the full card number.
