The plan normally costs 399 rupees a month and sits between the free tier and ChatGPT Plus, with a higher usage cap on GPT, more image generation, and improved memory. It was open to new sign-ups, existing free tier users, and people who already paid for Go. Redemption opened on the ChatGPT web app and Google Play; Indian tech coverage reported App Store redemption arriving about a week later. The redemption window has since closed, so this article is for people who already claimed it, not for anyone hoping to still claim it.
The part that matters now is how the offer was structured. Claiming it required adding a payment method, a card or a UPI account, even though nothing was charged during the free year. OpenAI's promotion terms say UPI users may temporarily see a charge of one rupee, which is required for UPI to work as a payment method and is refunded. That verification step usually creates a UPI autopay mandate at the same time, an authorization sitting quietly in your UPI app that OpenAI can charge later without asking you to approve each payment individually. That is why this is worth checking on your own terms now: the switch from free to paid was built to happen automatically unless you act.

When your free year actually ends
The terms themselves are on record, and they are less mysterious than the coverage suggests. OpenAI's Help Center page for this promotion says that once checkout completes the subscription is active and renews monthly for twelve months at no charge, and that at the end of those twelve months OpenAI charges your payment method the current monthly ChatGPT Go fee unless you cancel in advance. The clock starts at your checkout, not on a shared calendar date. Someone who redeemed on 4 November 2025, the first day, is twelve months in around early November 2026. Someone who redeemed in January is not.
That is the problem with the widely repeated 16 December 2026 date. It appears across Indian tech sites but matches nothing in OpenAI's published terms, and it does not describe the redemption window either. Coverage citing OpenAI's release notes puts the end of the India promotion at 21 January 2026, and that is the date new claims stopped, not the date anyone's free year runs out. As of August 2026 we have found no OpenAI page that names 16 December 2026 at all. Treat it as a number that got copied between blogs, and treat your account screen as the only date that binds you.
So do not take this article's word, or any other article's word, for your own date. The renewal date inside your own ChatGPT account is the only one that describes your subscription rather than the offer in general. Here is how to read it.
Find your renewal date and payment method
Three places to check, in order of usefulness.
- Inside ChatGPT. Open the app or chatgpt.com, sign in with the account holding the subscription, tap your profile, then Settings, then Subscription. This screen shows your current plan, the next billing date, and which payment method is attached.
- Your UPI app. If you paid with UPI, open Google Pay, PhonePe, or whichever app you used, go to your profile, find Autopay or Mandates, and look for an OpenAI or ChatGPT entry. It shows the mandate amount, which should read 399 rupees, and the next debit date.
- Your card statement or banking app. If you added a card instead of UPI, check for a small, already-refunded verification charge from OpenAI around when you signed up. That confirms which card is on file.
If the renewal date shown in the app is weeks or months away from whatever date you read about online, trust the app. It reads your actual subscription record, while the articles are describing the promotion in general.
Should you keep it at 399 rupees a month?
Once you know your real date, the urgency drains out of this. It is a normal subscription decision. Ask yourself two questions.
- How often do you actually run into a limit? Think about how often the free tier stopped you before this offer, and how much you use Go now. If you open ChatGPT most days and the higher GPT access or image generation limits are doing real work for you, 399 rupees a month is a small amount to keep that.
- Is ChatGPT the only AI tool you use, or are you already paying for something else? How to cancel cleanly if you decide not to keep it
First, timing. OpenAI's own promotion terms say that if you cancel after redeeming, access to ChatGPT Go stops at the end of your current billing cycle, and the promotion cannot be redeemed again on the same account. So cancelling in August to avoid a charge in November does not pause the offer, it ends it, and you give up the free months you have left. Step one, cancel the subscription itself. Step two, check the payment method separately, especially if you used UPI. Cancelling the subscription in ChatGPT should stop future charges on its own. But a UPI autopay mandate is a separate authorization that lives in your banking app, not inside OpenAI's system, and it can keep showing as active in that app until the next scheduled cycle clears it.
