Why did ChatGPT stop replying on WhatsApp?
ChatGPT did not break, and neither did your phone. Meta rewrote the rules for its WhatsApp Business platform so general purpose AI assistants are no longer allowed to operate there. OpenAI switched the ChatGPT number off on 15 January 2026, the date the new terms began applying to existing providers. Microsoft turned Copilot off the same day, and Perplexity, Luzia and Poke went the same way. If you message the old number and get an automated line saying the service is gone, or get nothing at all, that is why.
What you do next depends on one thing only: where your phone number is registered.
| Where your number is from | What works today |
|---|---|
| Inside the European Economic Area (the 27 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) | ChatGPT came back on WhatsApp on 13 July 2026 under a temporary EU competition order. It works for now, but is not guaranteed to last |
| Anywhere else in the world | The WhatsApp route is closed and there is no legitimate way to reopen it. Use the ChatGPT app or website, which takes two minutes to set up |
One thing to be clear about before you go looking: eligibility runs on the country code of the WhatsApp number, not on where you are standing, so a browser trick changes nothing. Buying a foreign SIM or a resold account to work around it is not a fix we will help with. It breaks the terms you agreed to and those accounts get banned. The app route below is faster anyway.
What Meta actually changed
In October 2025 Meta updated the WhatsApp Business Solution Terms to bar "AI providers" from using the Business API where the assistant is the main thing on offer. TechCrunch reported the change on 18 October 2025. It landed in two stages: immediately for new Business API sign ups from 15 October 2025, and from 15 January 2026 for everyone already running an assistant.
The distinction Meta drew is between an assistant and a business bot. An airline bot answering questions about your booking is fine, because the AI serves a business workflow. An assistant that will write your cover letter, explain a rash and translate a message is not, because the AI is the product. Meta AI, Meta's own assistant inside WhatsApp, is unaffected. That asymmetry is why regulators got involved.
| Assistant | Status on WhatsApp | Where it lives now |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Off since 15 January 2026, back in the EEA from 13 July 2026 | chatgpt.com and its app |
| Copilot | Off since 15 January 2026 | copilot.microsoft.com and its app |
| Perplexity | Off since January 2026 | perplexity.ai and its app |
| Luzia and Poke | Off since January 2026 | their own apps |
| Meta AI | Still there, where it is offered | inside WhatsApp itself |
Copilot and Perplexity are covered by the same EU order that brought ChatGPT back in Europe, so they could return there on the same basis. As of August 2026 neither had announced a return, which is why the table says off rather than back.
OpenAI put the number of people who had used ChatGPT through WhatsApp at more than 50 million, a figure quoted widely in October 2025 coverage. Microsoft said only that Copilot there had reached "millions of people" and gave no number. Treat both as company statements rather than audited counts.
Why Europe is different, and why the fix is temporary
Competition regulators saw a platform with billions of users closing a door to everyone except its owner. Italy's authority was the first to order anything, telling Meta on 24 December 2025 to suspend the change there. The European Commission had opened its own formal investigation three weeks earlier, on 4 December 2025, into whether Meta had abused a dominant position. In March 2026 Meta offered to readmit rivals in Europe for a fee, and the Commission concluded that was the ban again with a price tag on it.
On 9 June 2026 the Commission imposed interim measures, only the second time it has used that power since the current antitrust rules took effect in 2004. Meta was ordered to restore free access for rival general purpose assistants on the terms that existed before October 2025, with five working days to comply and daily penalty payments if it missed the deadline. ChatGPT went back live across the EEA on 13 July 2026.
Meta called the case regulatory overreach and said it would appeal to the EU courts. As of August 2026 no filing had been confirmed by the Commission or the courts, so treat the appeal as announced rather than lodged. Either way it changes nothing today: under EU law an appeal does not by itself suspend a Commission decision.
Read the word "interim" carefully. These measures hold only until the Commission reaches a final decision, which could go either way. If you are in the EEA and back to using ChatGPT inside WhatsApp, treat it as a convenience with an expiry date you cannot see, and set up the app as well so the day it stops again costs you nothing.
If WhatsApp was the only place you ever used AI
Many of the people affected never installed an AI app in their life. They had a contact in WhatsApp, next to their sister and their landlord, and typed at it the way they typed at anyone else. No account, no password, nothing new to learn. That was the entire appeal, and losing it is a real loss.
- The zero setup part is gone. The bot needed no account. The app and the website need an email address and about a minute. You pay that cost once.
- Your old conversations are probably gone. Microsoft said outright that Copilot chats could not be carried across, because the integration had no login to tie them to, and that such chats are deleted after roughly 30 days. If the thread is still in WhatsApp, export it from the chat menu first.
- The familiarity comes back fast. Every one of these assistants has an app that behaves like a messaging thread: you type at the bottom, answers arrive above.
- What you gain is not small. In the app you can upload a PDF or a photo of a letter, use voice, keep separate conversations for separate topics, search your history and switch models. The chat thread was always the stripped down version.
If you want a plain comparison of the main apps before picking one, the best AI apps for beginners covers ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity by what each is good at, with the free tiers laid out honestly.
Moving the habit across in about two minutes
The goal is not to learn a new tool. It is to get the reflex back: something on your home screen you open and type at without thinking. In this order it takes a couple of minutes, a little more on a slow connection.
- Open the website first, not the app store. chatgpt.com, claude.ai, gemini.google.com and whizi.io all run in a phone browser. On a limited data plan that saves you a large download.
- Add it to your home screen. Chrome on Android: the browser menu, then "Add to Home screen". Safari on iPhone: Share, then "Add to Home Screen". You get an icon that opens straight into the chat, which is as close to the WhatsApp feeling as it gets.
- Sign in with an email address. This is the step the bot let you skip, and it is what gives you saved history. If sign up refuses your country, that is a location limit rather than a payment problem, and OpenAI lists where ChatGPT is available on its own supported countries page. The other assistants publish similar lists.
- Install the native app later if you want voice. Voice input and camera handling are better there. The browser is enough for typing and pasting.
- Move one real task across the same day. Not a test question: rewrite this message, explain this letter, translate this, what do I cook with these four things.
A few habits transfer with a small adjustment rather than one for one.
| What you did in WhatsApp | What replaces it |
|---|---|
| Forwarded a message to get it explained | Paste it in, or upload a screenshot |
| Sent a voice note | The microphone button in the app, which transcribes as you speak |
| Asked one quick thing and closed the app | The same, except the answer is still findable next week |
| Sent a photo of a document | Upload the photo, or the PDF itself, which reads far better |
| Shared the answer to a family group | Copy it and paste into WhatsApp, which still works normally |
One last step while you are set up: add a second assistant rather than only a replacement for the one you lost, because a free tier shrinking or a model being retired has the same shape as this and two doors cost you nothing. ChatGPT alternatives compared is a plain list of what else is worth having.
- Stop troubleshooting: a policy change removed the assistant, so reinstalling WhatsApp will not bring it back.
- Check whether your number is registered inside the EEA, the only region where ChatGPT on WhatsApp currently works.
- Export the old WhatsApp thread from the chat menu if you want to keep what the assistant told you.
- Open the assistant in a phone browser and add it to your home screen before downloading anything.
- Create an account with an email address so your history actually saves this time.
- Move one real task across on day one instead of testing with a trivia question.
- Do not buy foreign numbers, resold accounts or gray market access to get around the block.
- Set yourself up with more than one model so the next policy change costs you nothing.
Frequently asked questions
Why is ChatGPT not working on WhatsApp anymore?
Meta updated the WhatsApp Business Solution Terms in October 2025 to bar third party general purpose AI assistants from the platform. The rule applied to existing providers from 15 January 2026 and OpenAI switched the number off that day. Nothing is wrong with your account or your phone.
Is ChatGPT coming back to WhatsApp?
It already has, but only in the European Economic Area. The European Commission imposed interim measures on 9 June 2026 requiring Meta to restore free access for rival assistants, and ChatGPT returned across the EEA on 13 July 2026. Those measures last only until the Commission issues a final decision, and Meta has said it will appeal. Outside the EEA nothing requires restoration and no return has been announced.
Which AI assistants were removed from WhatsApp?
Reporting named ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Luzia and Poke as the best known, and the rule covers any third party general purpose assistant. Business chatbots handling bookings, order tracking or customer support are still allowed, because there the AI supports a workflow rather than being the product. Meta AI was never affected.
Can I get my old chat history with the WhatsApp bot back?
Check your ChatGPT history first. OpenAI let people link their ChatGPT account from the WhatsApp contact profile before the shutdown, and for anyone who did that the old WhatsApp conversations were carried into the account. If you never linked it, that door closed on 15 January 2026 and OpenAI's copy cannot be recovered now. Messages still visible in WhatsApp itself can be exported from the chat menu as a text file. Microsoft stated plainly that Copilot conversations could not be transferred, because the integration ran without a login to tie them to, and that such chats are deleted after around 30 days.
Is Meta AI a good replacement?
It is the one assistant still inside WhatsApp, so it is the lowest effort option where it is offered. Availability varies by country and language and Meta changes it without much notice, so check by searching for it inside your own WhatsApp. Try it alongside a real AI app rather than instead of one: standalone apps handle documents, long conversations and file uploads in ways a chat thread does not.
Can I use a VPN or a foreign number to get ChatGPT back on WhatsApp?
No, and it is not worth attempting. Eligibility is tied to the country code of the WhatsApp number rather than your network location, so a VPN alone does nothing. Buying a foreign number or a resold account breaks the terms you agreed to and those accounts get banned. Installing the app is faster and leaves you with a better tool.
Do I have to pay now that the free WhatsApp bot is gone?
No. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity all have free tiers that cover ordinary use. The caps that do exist tend to land on file uploads, images, voice and long research runs rather than on plain text chat. Every provider meters differently and all of them change the rules without notice, so check the provider's own pricing page rather than a number you read in an article. What to do when ChatGPT says you have reached your limit covers which cap is which.
