ChatGPT deletes one chat or all of them, with nothing in between
ChatGPT has two delete buttons. One sits on each chat, and one in Settings wipes every chat at once. There's no checkbox for picking 10 chats, as of October 2026. Here's the route for each thing you might want gone, from OpenAI's help pages read on 18 October 2026:
| You want gone | Route | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| One chat | Chat history, the chat's ••• menu, Delete, confirm | It can't be restored, even by OpenAI Support |
| Every chat | Settings, Data controls, Delete all chats | Reaches chats inside projects too, and can't be undone |
| A group of chats, not all | Move them into one project, then the project's ••• menu, Delete project | Chats made with a GPT can't be moved into a project |
| An archived chat | Settings, Data controls, Archived chats, Delete | The menu says View archived chats on some devices |
| A Codex chat | Archive it, then Settings, Archived chats, the trash icon | Codex chats must be archived before you can delete them |
| A file or generated image | Library, select the file, Delete | Deleting the chat leaves it in Library |
| A saved memory | Settings, Personalization, Memory | Deleting the chat leaves it in place |
| A shared link | Settings, Data controls, Shared links, Manage | Deleting the chat already removes its link |
Archive is not a softer delete. OpenAI's delete and archive page says archiving "removes the chat from the regular sidebar but does not delete it." The chat stays searchable. It also keeps the same retention as any saved chat, which on a personal plan means it stays until you delete it.
What does deleting a ChatGPT chat actually remove?
Deleting a ChatGPT chat clears 4 of the 8 places its content can sit, by our count of OpenAI's help pages on 18 October 2026. The other 4 stay until you remove each one by hand. Some never go at all, because they live in someone else's account.
| Where the chat's content sits | After you press Delete | OpenAI's page |
|---|---|---|
| Your chat history and search | Gone at once | Deleting and archiving chats |
| OpenAI's stored copy | Scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days | Deleting and archiving chats |
| The chat's shared link | Removed | Shared links FAQ |
| Connected app data kept in the chat | Removed from your account; the Gmail or Drive original stays | Deleting and archiving chats |
| Files and images saved to Library | Stay until you delete them in Library | Chat and file retention |
| Saved memories made from the chat | Stay until you delete them in Memory | Memory in ChatGPT |
| Copies people saved from your shared link | Stay in their accounts | Shared links FAQ |
| A linked scheduled task's shared link | The task pauses, its link stays live | Shared links FAQ |
The 30 days has exceptions. OpenAI "schedules it for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, unless it was already de-identified and disassociated from your account or OpenAI must retain it longer for security or legal obligations." That wording is the same on its chat and file retention page.
Saved memory is the copy most people miss. OpenAI's memory page says "Deleting the original chat does not automatically delete a separate saved memory." So tell ChatGPT your salary, delete the chat, and the memory about your salary can stay. Delete it under Settings, Personalization, Memory. Even then, OpenAI may keep logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days.
Images behave the same way. ChatGPT saves uploaded and created files to Library, and "Deleting a chat containing files does not delete those files saved to Library." Open Library on the web, select the file and choose Delete. Where Library shows a Recently deleted list, you can still restore a file from it, or pick Delete forever.
How do you delete multiple ChatGPT chats at once?
You delete a batch of ChatGPT chats by moving them into one project and deleting that project, because ChatGPT has no multi-select. OpenAI's projects page says deleting a project "permanently removes its chats and instructions, along with files stored only in the project." Free accounts get projects too.
- Select New project in the sidebar and give it a name you won't mistake, like Delete.
- Drag each chat onto the project, or open a chat's ••• menu and choose Move to project.
- Open the project's ••• menu and select Delete project.
- Confirm. It can't be undone.
Two catches apply. Chats created with a GPT can't be moved into a project, so delete those one by one. And files saved to Library survive the project, the same as they survive a single delete.
Real multi-select isn't coming on any date OpenAI will name. Users asked for it in at least three OpenAI community threads between 28 August and 22 September 2026. OpenAI Support answered one on 28 August: "I cannot promise when or whether this will be added." A Support reply on 2 September added that bulk removal "could potentially affect available context, memories, and response coherence."
Chrome Web Store extensions such as ChatGPT Bulk Delete add a select mode to the sidebar. None of them comes from OpenAI. An extension that can delete your chats can read them too, so check who makes one before you install it. Whizi, which publishes this page, has a select mode in its web sidebar that deletes several chats in one action (how it works).
How do you delete ChatGPT chats on iPhone or Android?
The iPhone and Android apps use the same two buttons as the web. OpenAI's delete page gives one set of steps for every device, and its data controls page gives the app route into Settings:
- One chat: open the sidebar, open the chat's more options menu, select Delete and confirm.
- Every chat: open the sidebar, tap your profile icon to open Settings, then Data controls, then Delete all chats.
- An archived chat: in Data controls, open Archived chats or View archived chats (the label depends on your device), then Delete.
The Mac app follows the web's rules. OpenAI says conversations, screenshots and files in it "follow the same data retention policies as the web version." OpenAI lists Library as available on the web, so finish that cleanup on chatgpt.com.
Can you recover a deleted ChatGPT chat?
No. OpenAI says "You cannot restore a deleted chat in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support," and that covers chats removed with Delete all chats. So export first if there's any chance you'll want one back.
The export lives under Settings, Data controls, Export data: select Export, then confirm. OpenAI's export page says it can take up to 7 days to arrive. The download link expires 24 hours after you receive it. Check the ZIP before you delete anything, because "An export cannot restore chats that have already been deleted."
Want a tidy sidebar and nothing more? Archive instead. For a conversation you never want saved, start a Temporary chat. It stays out of your history, though OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
- Export your data first if you might want any chat back, since a deleted chat cannot be restored
- Use Delete, not Archive; an archived chat is still saved and searchable
- For a batch, move the chats into one project and delete the project
- Delete saved memories from the chat under Settings, Personalization, Memory
- Delete the chat's files and generated images from Library on the web
Frequently asked questions
Does deleting a ChatGPT chat delete what ChatGPT remembers about me?
Not a saved memory. OpenAI says saved memories are stored separately from chat history, so a memory made from the chat stays until you delete it under Settings, Personalization, Memory. Information ChatGPT drew from chat history works differently, and how ChatGPT memory works covers both switches.
Does ChatGPT delete chats automatically?
No, not on a personal plan. OpenAI says regular and archived chats remain saved to your account until you delete them or a workspace retention policy removes them. A Temporary chat is the only kind that stays out of your history, and the safest chat is one that never held the secret, so see what never to paste into an AI chat.
Does deleting my ChatGPT account delete all my chats?
Yes. OpenAI says it deletes your data within 30 days of an account deletion, except a limited set it may keep where the law requires or permits. It does not cancel a subscription billed through Apple. How to delete a ChatGPT account has the steps and the billing checks to run first.
Will deleting all my chats stop ChatGPT charging me?
No. Your chats and your subscription are separate, so Delete all chats leaves your plan and your saved card exactly as they were. Cancel the plan in Settings, or where Apple or Google bills you, and see how to remove your card from ChatGPT to take the card off as well.
