How do you fix a Grok conversation that is too long?
You fix it by moving the work into a new chat. Grok has no button that extends a full thread, and xAI documents no setting that shrinks one. Four fixes work: a handoff to a new chat, Branch in new chat, a side chat that writes the handoff, and one chat per task inside a Project. The handoff takes about two minutes:
- Read the message first. "Your message is too long" means one message is the problem, so shorten it or attach fewer files. "The conversation is too long" means the whole thread is full.
- If the old chat still answers, paste the handoff prompt below and copy Grok's reply. If it won't answer, copy the last good draft or code by hand.
- Open a new chat. If the work lives in a Project, open the new chat inside that Project so its instructions and files come along.
- Paste the opener below with the handoff under it, and check the three line reply before you ask for anything new.
```text
We're moving this work to a new chat that can't see this one. Write a handoff I can paste in as its first message. Keep it under 700 words, with these headings:
- Goal: what we're making or deciding, in two sentences.
- Latest version: the current draft or code in full if it's under 300 words, otherwise its outline with every heading.
- Decisions: one line each, with the reason.
- Dead ends: what we tried or ruled out, and why, so it isn't suggested again.
- Rules: every instruction I gave on tone, format, length, names and numbers.
- Facts: every number, name, date and file name we rely on, exactly as written.
- The next step, and any open questions.
Add nothing we didn't discuss. Mark anything you're unsure of with [check].
```
```text
Here is a handoff from an earlier chat that ran out of room. Read it, then reply in three lines only: the goal, the rules you'll follow, and the next step. Wait for my go before you start.
[paste the handoff here]
```
Ask for the handoff early. A long Grok chat tends to drift before it hits the wall, so a summary written at the very end can carry the drift with it. The dead ends list matters most. A new chat has no idea what already failed unless the handoff tells it.
Two features in grok.com's interface can help here. Branch in new chat starts a new thread from an earlier message, so a detour at the end of the old chat doesn't come along. Side chats let you "Ask about this chat without adding anything to it", in Grok's own wording, and they "disappear when you close them". That makes a side chat a tidy place to ask for the handoff. We haven't tested whether either one still works once a thread is past the wall.
What do Grok's "too long" messages mean?
Each message means something different, and only one of them means the whole chat is full. We read the English interface text that grok.com loads in the browser on 2 November 2026. It holds five length messages, and none of them appears in xAI's help pages:
| Message you see | Where | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| "The conversation is too long. Try shortening it or starting a new one." | Grok chat, after you send | The thread plus your new message is bigger than the model's window | Hand off to a new chat |
| "Your message is too long. Please shorten it and try again." | Grok chat, after you send | This one message is too big, not the thread | Split the message, or attach the text as a file |
| "That's too much for one message" with "Try fewer or smaller files, or start a new chat." | Grok chat, attachments | The files in one message are too large together | Send fewer or smaller files |
| "Character Limit Exceeded" with a count | The message box, before you send | You've typed past the box's character cap | Cut the text, or upload it as a file |
| "This conversation is too long." | Grok Imagine | The image or video thread is full | Start a new Imagine thread |
Some people see older wording. Google's result for an r/grok thread titled "Anyone else hitting the conversation too long wall" shows it quoting "This conversation has grown too long for the model to continue. Please start a new conversation." That text isn't in grok.com's current interface strings, so it may come from an earlier version or another Grok app. The fix is the same.
None of these is a usage limit. Grok's usage wall says "Usage limit reached." and lifts when your weekly pool resets, which Grok usage limit reached covers. A length message won't lift with time. The thread stays too big until you leave it.
How long can a Grok conversation be?
xAI doesn't say how long a Grok conversation can be. Its Grok FAQ, read on 2 November 2026, has no section on conversation length or context windows. The numbers xAI does publish are for its API. The API pricing page gives Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6 and Grok 4.5 a 500,000 token context, and the older Grok 4.3 and Grok 4.20 1 million.
So the newest Grok in the API has half the room of the model before it. Whether the Grok app gives you the full API window is something xAI doesn't state. Nobody outside xAI can measure it from a chat either, because Grok also spends room on its own instructions, search results and reasoning.
xAI did once sell length as a plan feature. On the grok.com checkout we read on 11 October 2026, SuperGrok Lite at $10 a month gave "2x longer conversations in Chat" and SuperGrok at $30 gave "5x". xAI never said whether "longer" meant a bigger window or more messages. The X Subscription tiers xAI has sold to new customers since 12 October 2026 print only usage multiples, such as Premium's "4x more usage compared to Plus" on xAI's pricing page. None of them mentions conversation length.
Grok itself has answered the question. In a March 2025 reply on X, the @grok account said there's no hard limit on conversation length, but a long one can hit "a practical ceiling due to processing constraints". The error messages above are that ceiling.
Why does Grok forget things before it says the chat is too long?
Grok loses track of early messages well before the hard stop, and xAI shows no meter that warns you. A GitHub issue opened on 3 February 2026 on xAI's grok-prompts repository describes the pattern. In a long chat, Grok "will often pick something at random in the conversation and respond to that". It was still open with no reply from xAI when we read it on 2 November 2026.
That isn't unique to Grok. The 2023 Lost in the Middle study found that accuracy "significantly degrades when models must access relevant information in the middle of long contexts". A huge window gives a model room. It doesn't make the model read the middle carefully.
Files make it worse. xAI's FAQ allows up to 150 MB per file and about 100 files at once on the web (20 on Android). It also says "Very long files may be summarized or handled in sections for the best results", and that for PDFs over 100 pages "Grok focuses on text and key visuals". So a long upload may never be read word for word, even before the chat is full.
Watch for the early signs. Grok repeats a rule you changed, answers an old question, or drops a constraint. When that happens, write the handoff while the chat still answers. Starting fresh at that point costs less than a long thread that keeps getting things wrong.
Which AI chat holds a longer conversation than Grok?
Claude on its paid plans and Gemini on Google AI Pro and Ultra hold 1 million tokens, and both publish the figure for their chat apps, which xAI doesn't. Claude's help center lists 1M tokens for Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 on paid plans. Google's Gemini limits page lists 1 million on Google AI Pro and AI Ultra. Both were read on 2 November 2026.
| Chat app and plan, 2 November 2026 | Context window | Published for the app? |
|---|---|---|
| Grok on grok.com and the apps, any plan | not published | No (Grok 4.7 is 500K in xAI's API) |
| ChatGPT Plus, GPT Instant | 54K tokens | Yes, on OpenAI's pricing page |
| ChatGPT Plus, GPT Reasoning | 256K tokens | Yes, on OpenAI's pricing page |
| Gemini, Google AI Plus | 128K tokens | Yes, on Google's limits page |
| Gemini, Google AI Pro or Ultra | 1M tokens | Yes, on Google's limits page |
| Claude, paid plans, newest models | 1M tokens | Yes, on Claude's help center |
The bigger difference is what happens at the edge. Claude's usage and length limits page says Claude summarizes earlier messages when a chat nears its limit, for users with code execution turned on. Claude conversation too long covers that setting. ChatGPT stops the thread like Grok does, as ChatGPT conversation too long explains. The context window comparison lists the API windows model by model.
How do you keep a long Grok project from running out of room?
Keep the work in a Grok Project and start one chat per task inside it. grok.com's Project panel holds Instructions and files marked "Shared Across Project", so the rules and reference documents reach every chat there without riding in one thread. Put rules that never change (tone, format, names) in the Project instructions, not in message 3 of a long chat.
Upload reference material once, and send only the part you need. A 20 page excerpt costs far less room than the 300 page manual. Ask for short answers when you don't need long ones, too. Every reply Grok writes becomes part of the history it rereads on the next turn.
Before an old thread becomes hard to open, save it. On grok.com, the Data Controls tab in Settings holds Export Account Data, which reads "You can download all data associated with your account below." xAI's FAQ points to the same tab, under Profile, Settings, Data Controls, for managing your data.
Whizi, which publishes this page, runs Grok 4.6 and Grok 4.7 on Pro, as Grok in Whizi sets out. It doesn't stop a long chat. It loses on room, though: every model on Whizi gets 40,000 input tokens per turn, and older history is trimmed silently. For one very long Grok thread, Grok itself holds more.
- Read the message: "Your message is too long" is one message, "The conversation is too long" is the whole thread
- Ask for the handoff while the chat still answers, not after the wall
- Open the new chat inside the same Project so its instructions and files come along
- Try Branch in new chat to skip a detour at the end of the old thread
- Keep standing rules in Project instructions, not early in a long chat
- Download your data from Settings, Data Controls before an old thread is hard to open
Frequently asked questions
Does Grok have a conversation length limit?
Yes, but xAI doesn't publish it. A Grok chat stops with "The conversation is too long" when it outgrows the model's context window. xAI prints that window only for its API, where Grok 4.7 holds 500,000 tokens as of November 2026.
Is "conversation too long" the same as Grok's usage limit?
No. The usage wall says "Usage limit reached." and lifts when your weekly pool resets on the date in Settings, Usage. A conversation that is too long stays too long however long you wait. You need a new chat.
Does SuperGrok or a higher plan give longer Grok conversations?
xAI doesn't say so for current plans. The old SuperGrok checkout promised "5x longer conversations in Chat" without saying 5x of what. The X Subscription tiers sold to new customers since 12 October 2026 print only usage multiples, so plan on a handoff whatever you pay.
Can I get back a Grok chat that is too long to continue?
You can still read it, but you can't extend it. Copy what you need into a handoff for a new chat, try Branch in new chat from an earlier message, or download your data from Settings, Data Controls to keep a copy.
