How do you fix a ChatGPT conversation that is too long?
ChatGPT has no button that extends a full thread and no meter that warns you before one fills. The only way on is a new chat that carries the work across. It takes about a minute:
- Paste the handoff prompt below into the old chat. If the wall blocks new messages, hover over your last message, click the pencil icon and replace that message with the prompt. OpenAI's help page documents the edit but not whether it frees room, so treat it as worth a try. Still refused? Edit a message further up.
- Copy the handoff ChatGPT writes.
- Open a new chat, inside the same Project if the work lives in one, and set the Thinking slider to Medium or higher (on Go, select Think).
- Paste the opening line below with the handoff under it, and read the three line confirmation before you ask for anything new.
```text
This chat is about to continue in a new conversation that cannot see this one. Write a handoff I can paste in as its first message. Use these headings and stay under 700 words:
- Goal: what we are building or deciding, in two sentences.
- Current state: the latest version of the work, quoted in full if it is under 300 words, otherwise its outline with every heading.
- Decisions made: one line each, with the reason.
- Rejected options: what we tried or ruled out and why, so it is not suggested again.
- Constraints: every rule I set on tone, format, length, tools, names and numbers.
- Facts: every number, name, date and file name we rely on, exactly as written.
- Open questions, and the next step.
Add nothing we did not discuss. Mark anything you are unsure of with [check].
```
```text
Here is a handoff from an earlier chat that ran out of room. Read it, then reply with three lines only: the goal, the constraints you will follow, and the next step. Wait for my go before doing anything else.
[paste the handoff here]
```
Two parts of that prompt do most of the work. The current draft is quoted rather than summarised, because a summary of a draft is a different draft. And the rejected options travel with it, because a new chat has no record that they failed unless the handoff says so. If the last stretch of the old chat was a detour, there's a shortcut. Branch in a new chat, in the menu under an earlier reply, "opens a new chat that continues from that point in the conversation" (OpenAI's help center). A branch from well before the wall skips the summary entirely.
How long can a ChatGPT conversation be on each plan?
A ChatGPT conversation can hold 27K tokens on Free, 54K on Go and Plus and 128K on Pro in Instant. In Thinking it holds 256K on Go and Plus or 400K on Pro, according to OpenAI's pricing page as of October 2026. The page also turns each window into pages of your own text. That's the number to watch. On Plus, a Thinking chat takes about 320 pages against about 40 in Instant.
| Plan, as of October 2026 | Instant: total window | Instant: your text | Thinking: total window | Thinking: your text |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 27K tokens | about 12 pages | varies | varies |
| Go | 54K tokens | about 40 pages | 256K tokens | about 320 pages |
| Plus | 54K tokens | about 40 pages | 256K tokens | about 320 pages |
| Pro ($100 or $200 a month) | 128K tokens | about 250 pages | 400K tokens | about 680 pages |
Your own text always gets less than the total. OpenAI's footnote on the same page: "The portion available for user input is smaller than the total window, as space is also used for system instructions", and memories, tools and the reply itself take their share. Thinking here means the slider set to Medium or High on Plus (Pro adds Extra High, and Go has Think), which OpenAI's pricing table calls GPT Reasoning. Free has no fixed figure for it.
The windows also moved this year. That's why so many guides still quote 16K and 32K. OpenAI's GPT-5.5 help page listed 16K on Free, 32K on Plus and Business and 128K on Pro and Enterprise for Instant in July 2026. The October pricing page lists 27K and 54K. Free and Plus each grew by about 69% in three months. Pro didn't move, and neither did the Thinking windows, which were already 256K on paid plans and 400K on Pro in July.
So the cheapest fix is a setting rather than an upgrade. On Plus, starting a long project at Medium or High gives it 8 times the room Instant does, on the same subscription. There are two caveats. Thinking has its own usage limit, past which OpenAI says ChatGPT "may continue with another available model". And OpenAI doesn't say whether switching a thread that has already hit the wall brings it back. Treat the new chat as the fix and Thinking as the way to make the next one last.
What do the two "too long" messages in ChatGPT mean?
Both mean the thread is bigger than the window of the model reading it. They differ in when they appear. The one you meet while working reads "You've reached the maximum length for this conversation, but you can keep talking by starting a new chat", as quoted on OpenAI's community forum on 27 August 2026. Waiting does nothing for it. It's a size limit, and the usage caps that reset with time are a separate wall, covered in ChatGPT says I've reached my limit.
The second, "This conversation is too long, please start a new one.", can appear when you only try to open an old thread. Forum posts from May and June 2026 describe chats that bounce to a blank new chat or never finish loading. In those threads, OpenAI Support's replies were to start a new conversation or to open a ticket. OpenAI documents no setting that shrinks a stored chat.
To get the text back out, export your data from Settings, Data controls, Export data. OpenAI says an export can take up to 7 days to arrive. The download link expires 24 hours after you receive it, so download it the day the email lands. The ZIP holds your chat history as files you can read without the app.
That ZIP is also how a thread moves somewhere else. Whizi, which publishes this page, imports a ChatGPT export in the browser without uploading the file. It sends a conversation longer than 400 messages in slices onto the same chat and makes every message searchable. It loses on room. Every model on Whizi gets 40,000 input tokens per turn, far less than a ChatGPT Thinking chat holds, and older history is trimmed silently with no warning. Use it to read and search the old work, and start the next stretch from a handoff, as you would in ChatGPT.
Why does a long ChatGPT conversation get slow?
A long ChatGPT conversation gets slow in the browser before it hits the length wall. The cure is the same new chat. Forum users on OpenAI's community site describe the lag in the browser page itself: typing that trails the keyboard, scrolling that stutters, threads that take seconds to open. The test takes ten seconds. Open a fresh chat in the same tab and send one short prompt. If it answers at normal speed, the long thread is the problem, not your connection or ChatGPT's servers.
OpenAI hasn't published a cause or a fix as of October 2026. Some forum users report that the Android app handles a long thread better than a browser tab. ChatGPT also shows no meter for how full a thread is (users have asked for a conversation capacity gauge on the forum). That makes lag the practical early warning. When typing starts to trail, write the handoff while the chat still answers.
Which AI chat holds a longer conversation than ChatGPT?
Claude and Gemini on their paid plans hold 1 million tokens, about 18 times ChatGPT Plus's 54K Instant window and about 4 times its 256K Thinking window. Claude's help center lists 1M tokens for Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 on paid plans and 200K for older models. Google's Gemini limits page lists 1 million on Google AI Pro and AI Ultra, 128K on AI Plus and 32K without a plan. Both were read on 3 October 2026.
| Chat app and plan, early October 2026 | Context window | Against ChatGPT Plus in Instant |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Free, Instant | 27K tokens | 0.5x |
| Gemini, no plan | 32K tokens | 0.6x |
| ChatGPT Plus, Instant | 54K tokens | 1x |
| Gemini, Google AI Plus | 128K tokens | 2.4x |
| ChatGPT Plus, Thinking | 256K tokens | 4.7x |
| ChatGPT Pro, Thinking | 400K tokens | 7.4x |
| Claude, paid plans, newest models | 1M tokens | 18.5x |
| Gemini, Google AI Pro or Ultra | 1M tokens | 18.5x |
The bigger difference is what happens at the edge. Claude's usage and length limits page says that when a conversation nears the limit, "Claude summarizes earlier messages to continue the conversation seamlessly", as long as code execution is enabled. That's the handoff above, done for you. ChatGPT stops and asks for a new chat.
A bigger window is room, not recall. The 2023 Lost in the Middle study found that accuracy "significantly degrades when models must access relevant information in the middle of long contexts". What is a context window explains why. Even a 1M thread benefits from a handoff now and then. To move with your history, switching from ChatGPT to Claude covers the export and the import. The context window comparison lists the windows model by model.
How do you keep a long ChatGPT project from running out of room?
Keep the work in a ChatGPT Project and start a new chat for each task inside it. OpenAI's Projects page says a chat moved in with Move to project "inherits the project's instructions and file context", and its memory page adds that with project-only memory, chats "can reference other conversations in the same project". Put the rules that never change (tone, format, names) in the project instructions or in Custom Instructions so no handoff has to carry them. Upload reference files once. Go and Plus projects take up to 25 files, Pro projects 40.
Outside a Project, the Reference chat history setting lets ChatGPT "use relevant information from past conversations", per OpenAI's memory page. The same page says memory "does not retain every detail from every conversation". So a new chat may recall a preference from the old one, but only a handoff reliably carries a draft.
The rule we'd use: one chat per task, one Project per piece of work, Thinking for anything you expect to run past 40 pages, and a handoff the moment typing starts to lag.
- Run the handoff prompt in the old chat; if new messages are blocked, edit your last message into the prompt
- Paste the handoff into a new chat in the same Project and have it confirm the goal, constraints and next step first
- On Plus, start long work on the Thinking slider (Think on Go): about 320 pages of room against 40 in Instant
- If an old chat will not open, request a data export: it can take up to 7 days, and the link lasts 24 hours
- Keep standing rules in project instructions or Custom Instructions so no handoff has to carry them
- Write the handoff when typing starts to lag, not after the wall
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT Plus have a conversation length limit?
Yes. As of October 2026 a Plus chat holds 54K tokens in Instant, about 40 pages of your own text, and 256K tokens in Thinking, about 320 pages, per OpenAI's pricing page. Past that, ChatGPT stops with the maximum length message and asks you to start a new chat.
How do you continue a ChatGPT conversation that is too long?
Start a new chat from a handoff summary. Ask the old chat for the goal, current state, decisions, rejected options, constraints and open questions (edit your last message into that request if new messages are blocked). Then paste the result into a new chat, ideally in the same Project and on the Thinking slider.
Will upgrading to ChatGPT Pro fix a conversation that is too long?
It moves the wall rather than removing it. Pro raises the Instant window from 54K to 128K tokens and Thinking from 256K to 400K, about 680 pages of your text. But OpenAI doesn't say whether an upgrade revives a thread that already hit the limit, so plan on the handoff either way. On Plus, switching to Thinking already fits 8 times more than Instant.
Why is my long ChatGPT chat so slow?
Long threads lag in the browser before they reach the length limit. Send one short prompt in a fresh chat in the same tab. If it answers at normal speed, the long thread is the cause. OpenAI hasn't published a fix as of October 2026, so write a handoff and continue in a new chat.
