ChatGPT network error: 7 fixes, the 6 connection messages, and how to save an answer that cut off

In brief

To fix a ChatGPT network error, regenerate once, then turn off your VPN, proxy or Web Protect and try another network, as OpenAI's help center advises. Check status.openai.com too, but outages cover little of the clock: an incident was open on ChatGPT conversations for 89 of the 2,160 hours in the 90 days to 10 October 2026.

A brushed silver OpenAI knot on a black plinth, a chrome speech bubble whose paper ribbon stops halfway, and a coiled network cable lying unplugged beside a wall socket, with a small amber status lamp glowing on the floor.

How do you fix a ChatGPT network error?

OpenAI lists four fixes for "A network error occurred." on its troubleshooting page, and all four are on your side of the connection. Its network guide for IT teams adds the WebSocket checks. We read both on 11 October 2026 and put every step in the order that saves your work first.

  1. Copy your prompt and whatever part of the answer arrived. Nothing after this step then depends on the page keeping them.
  2. If the reply froze partway, wait 30 to 60 seconds, then press Stop generating and Regenerate. That's OpenAI's own order for a reply that hangs.
  3. Check for an OpenAI incident on status.openai.com or the free Is ChatGPT down? page Whizi runs, which reads the same feed and refreshes every minute. Read the Conversations row, not just the banner.
  4. Turn off your VPN or proxy, and any Web Protect or security filter. OpenAI lists these first for "A network error occurred."
  5. Open ChatGPT in a private window or another browser. One move rules out extensions and stale site data.
  6. Switch networks. Try your phone on mobile data. If it works there, your wifi, office or school network is the cause.
  7. If only long answers fail, start a new chat and ask for the output in parts. OpenAI's page says to "Start a new chat if the conversation is long or has many turns."

That's why step 3 comes before you touch your settings, and why it rarely ends the search. We read the incident data behind status.openai.com on 11 October 2026 and kept every incident that touched Conversations, the component that answers your messages. There were 35 of them. Together they were open for 89 hours, about 4 percent of the window. Not one of the 35 titles used the word "network". OpenAI posts them as errors ("Elevated errors in ChatGPT conversations", 5 October), so a network error on a green status page points at your connection, unless an incident just hasn't been posted yet.

Is ChatGPT down, or is it your network?

It's your network when the status page is green and ChatGPT works on your phone over mobile data. It's OpenAI when an incident is open on Conversations and its title includes your plan, region or app. Titles are often scoped: an incident for "Users in APAC region" ran 226 minutes on 4 September 2026, and "Some ChatGPT content may be unavailable on Android" ran 206 minutes on 9 October.

Incidents also end fast. The 35 in our window ran a median 94 minutes, 16 closed inside an hour and 6 ran past four hours. OpenAI marked 4 as a partial outage, none as a full outage, and the other 31 as degraded performance. By OpenAI's own labels, most incidents slow the service rather than stop it, so a friend's working ChatGPT proves little. The Conversations component shows 99.91 percent uptime for the same 90 days.

OpenAI's network guide names two checks as "critical to debugging". First, does the error hit only your machine, or other people on the same network too? Second, does it go away when you switch from the office wifi to a hotspot on your phone? If the whole office fails and the hotspot works, the fault sits in the network, and steps 4 to 6 or your IT team are the fix. Failing on both with a green page points at your account, or at an incident OpenAI hasn't posted yet. For that case, the something went wrong guide covers account level errors.

Which ChatGPT network error message are you seeing?

Six messages point at the connection, and the wording narrows the cause. The table gives each one with its source and first fix, as of October 2026.

The websocket row matters most at work. OpenAI's network guide, written for IT departments, lists 30 domains to allowlist and names eight web security products that may need an exception, among them Cisco Umbrella and Zscaler Internet Access. If ChatGPT fails only on the office network, send your IT team that page rather than clearing your cookies again.

Why does ChatGPT get a network error on long responses?

Long answers fail more because the connection has to stay open for the whole reply. OpenAI's network guide says ChatGPT uses a WebSocket to wss://ws.chatgpt.com for "Conversation updates and notifications", on top of ordinary web requests. Its warning to IT teams is direct: "If your organization blocks WebSocket traffic by default, some features may stall, disconnect, or fail to stream updates correctly."

The same page describes the failure a long answer runs into, though it never mentions answer length: "If sessions connect but later stall or disconnect, check idle timeout and maximum frame or message-size policies for WebSocket traffic." Our reading: a firewall, proxy or VPN with a short idle timeout can drop a stream that pauses while the model thinks. A two line answer finishes before that happens. A long report may not.

Users describe exactly that pattern. In an OpenAI community thread opened in April 2024 and viewed 16,387 times, the first poster writes that output pauses "in the middle", hangs, and ends in the network error. Another poster says errors started "after a few responses" in long programming chats. OpenAI's consumer pages don't say long answers overload its servers. They point at the connection, and at long threads, which is why step 7 starts a new chat.

How do you get back an answer that cut off?

Regenerate first, and ask for the rest only if the retry dies at the same spot. Saved chats stay on OpenAI's side after a network error, so the conversation itself isn't lost. The reply that was arriving is the part at risk.

  1. Copy the partial answer before you refresh or switch devices.
  2. Press Regenerate once. OpenAI's help page calls a failed response something that "May be a one-time error".
  3. If it fails at the same point, ask for the remainder. Paste the last full sentence and write: "Continue from this sentence. Don't repeat anything above it."
  4. For long documents, ask for numbered parts: "Write sections 1 to 3 only. I'll ask for the next ones." Each part then finishes before a timeout can reach it.
  5. If the thread is long, move it. Start a new chat with a short summary of the old one, the method in the ChatGPT conversation too long fix.

"Error in message stream" has one extra check. In the September 2026 forum thread, 40 posts long, users found every chat inside one Project failing while chats outside it worked, on both web and the app. If you work inside a Project, paste the prompt into a plain chat before you blame your network.

What if the network error keeps coming back and the work can't wait?

Finish the task in another assistant, then come back once your network or OpenAI's incident is fixed. What to use when ChatGPT is down lists the options and how to carry the context over.

Whizi, which publishes this page, runs each reply on its own server rather than in your browser tab, so a dropped connection or a closed tab doesn't kill the answer. Reopen the chat and it picks the stream back up. The $15.99 Starter plan includes ChatGPT Luna and Claude Haiku in one picker, and you can import your ChatGPT conversations. Where it loses: there's no Regenerate button, so you edit the prompt and resend, and Whizi has a generic error of its own, "Something went wrong. Please retry."

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT say network error when my internet is working?

Because a page that loads fine needs only a short request, while a ChatGPT reply streams over a WebSocket that stays open until the answer ends. OpenAI's network guide warns that if a network blocks WebSocket traffic, "some features may stall, disconnect, or fail to stream updates correctly", and it asks IT teams to check idle timeouts on that link.

Can a VPN cause a ChatGPT network error?

Yes. "Disable VPNs or proxy connections" is the first fix OpenAI lists for "A network error occurred." as of October 2026. If you need the VPN, try another server location, then test once with it off to confirm the cause.

Why does the ChatGPT app show a network error?

The usual causes are the same as on the web: a VPN, a filtered network or an OpenAI incident. OpenAI's network guide lists the Android, iOS and desktop app hosts among the domains a network must allow. On the macOS app, OpenAI says "Network configuration issue" with an SSL certificate warning can come from SSL inspection on your network, and the web version works as a fallback.
