Gemini Deep Research limit: the 20 a day cap is gone, and only work accounts kept a count

In brief

Gemini Deep Research has no fixed report limit on personal plans. Since 17 May 2026, every report spends the same 5 hour and weekly meter as chat, and Google rates it a high usage cost. Printed caps survive only on work accounts: 20 reports a day on Business Standard and 120 on AI Ultra Access.

A rainbow glass Gemini star, a stack of bound research reports tied with string, a brass tally counter with a blank number window and a frosted hourglass with its sand half run through, each on a black plinth in a charcoal studio.

What is the Gemini Deep Research limit on each plan?

Personal Gemini plans have no Deep Research count anymore. Google's limits page, which we read on 18 October 2026, puts everything on one meter: "Your limit refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit." Deep Research spends that meter at a "High" cost, the same grade as video. Google gives the reason: it "requires Gemini to use multiple, multi-step search queries and several rounds of reasoning sweeps." So the number of reports you get depends on what else you ran that week.

What each plan buys now is a multiple of a "standard" allowance that Google never sizes. Here's the full list for a personal account in the US, as of October 2026:

Google AI Pro$19.994x standardNone printed
Google AI Ultra$99.995x AI ProNone printed

Prices come from Google's subscriptions page. Ultra adds one extra inside the report itself. Google's Deep Research help page says Ultra subscribers "may get visuals in reports", such as charts and diagrams.

Why does every guide still say 20 reports a day?

Because Google printed that number for eight months, and most guides haven't caught up. As of 18 October 2026, 6 of the 11 pages we checked that rank for "gemini deep research limit" still quote a fixed daily count for personal plans. Three of those six were updated after the change. None of the 11 mentions that Google switched to the meter on 17 May 2026. Google's own model access page dates it: the meter applied to users over 18 from 17 May 2026, and to users under 18 from 24 July 2026.

We rebuilt the history from the Internet Archive's copies of Google's limits page. Each row is what that capture says, with the model Google named at the time:

20 May 2026No count, standard meterNo count, 2xNo count, 4xNo count, 5x or 20x Pro

Two cuts hide in that table. Ultra fell from 200 reports a day to 120 between the 28 January and 10 February 2026 captures, a 40% cut. Then every count went away in May. Google eased the meter on 28 May. Josh Woodward said Google was "capping the amount of quota a single prompt can use", 9to5Google reported, and Google added: "If a request fails, you won't be charged." A report that errors out shouldn't cost you anything.

How many Deep Research reports do work and school accounts get?

Work and school accounts still get a printed Deep Research count, and it runs from 5 reports a month to 120 a day. Google's work and school page lists it by Workspace edition. We read it on 18 October 2026:

Work or school editionDeep Research limit
Additional service editions (Business Base, Essentials Starter, Workspace Individual and others)5 reports a month
Business Starter, Enterprise Essentials, Frontline, Nonprofits5 reports a month
Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus20 reports a day
AI Expanded Access add on30 reports a day
AI Ultra Access add on120 reports a day
Education Fundamentals, Standard and Plus5 reports a month
Google AI Pro for Education20 reports a day

To see which row you're on, look at the top of gemini.google.com while signed in to the work account. Google says a Pro, Expanded or Ultra badge shows there, and no badge means standard access. Only an admin can move you up a row. Work use across the Gemini web app, the mobile app and Gemini in Chrome "counts toward your usage limits", per the same page.

How do you check how much Deep Research you have left?

You check it in Settings, then Usage Limits, at the bottom left of gemini.google.com. That's the only gauge Google gives a personal account, and it shows the shared meter, not reports. Gemini also warns you near the end. Google's limits page says it "will notify you when you're close to your limit", and once you hit it, a second notice tells you when it refreshes.

Budget time as well as quota. A report "usually takes about 5-10 minutes", per Google's Deep Research help page, and longer for complex ones. You can leave the chat while it runs, and Gemini notifies you when it's done. Long threads cost more too. Google rates an ongoing conversation as a "Medium" cost, so start a new chat before a report rather than tacking it onto a long one.

What can you do when Gemini Deep Research hits the limit?

Wait 5 hours, or pay for more usage. Those are the two routes Google gives, and the weekly limit decides which one you need. If only the 5 hour window is spent, the refill comes back on its own. If the week is spent, nothing refills until it turns over.

  1. Wait for the refill. The meter "refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit", and Gemini's notice tells you when.
  2. Move chat to Flash-Lite. On a paid plan, Google says "you can continue your conversation with Flash-Lite" after the limit, and Flash-Lite prompts "won't count against your quota". That keeps the meter for the next report.
  3. Upgrade or buy credits. Ultra costs $99.99 for 5x AI Pro's usage or $199.99 for 20x. Google's subscriptions page adds: "You can extend your limits by purchasing AI credits."
  4. Ask your admin. On a work account, AI Expanded Access lifts you from 20 reports a day to 30, and AI Ultra Access to 120.

Developers have a metered option outside the app. Google launched new Deep Research and Deep Research Max agents for the Gemini API on 21 April 2026, built on Gemini 3.1 Pro and sold through paid API tiers, per Google's announcement. The API docs estimate about $1 to $3 a task for Deep Research and $3 to $7 for Max, at preview rates. A task can run up to 60 minutes.

Whizi, which publishes this page, also runs Deep Research on its paid plans, at a flat 200 credits a run that it refunds if the run fails. That's 12 runs a month on Pro's 2,500 credits or 50 on Powerhouse's 10,000 (pricing). Where it loses: each Whizi run makes six web searches, one run can go at a time, and it's in the web app only. It suits a quick sourced brief, not the long reports Gemini writes.

Workflow checklist
  • Open Settings, then Usage Limits, on gemini.google.com before a report to see what's left of the 5 hour window and the week
  • Start Deep Research in a fresh chat, since long threads cost a "Medium" share of the meter on their own
  • After the limit, keep routine questions on Flash-Lite, which doesn't count against a paid plan's quota
  • On a work account, check for the Pro, Expanded or Ultra badge to see whether you get 5 a month or 20, 30 or 120 a day
  • Ignore guides that quote 20 reports a day for a personal Google AI Pro account; that count ended on 17 May 2026
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Gemini Deep Research free?

Yes, Deep Research works without a Google AI plan, on the standard meter. Google warns that features which "require more compute resources, like Deep Research, may be unavailable during periods of high demand" for free users, and that their limits can be cut first. Until May 2026 the free cap was 5 reports a month. Is Google AI Pro worth it covers what the $19.99 plan adds.

Does Deep Research use up my Gemini chat limit?

Yes. Since 17 May 2026, chat, Deep Research, images and video draw on one 5 hour and weekly meter on personal plans, and Deep Research is one of the costliest things on it. A heavy research day can leave little room for chat. Gemini usage limit reached explains the meter and the error you see when it runs out.

Why does Gemini Deep Research say it's at full capacity?

Because Google pauses compute-heavy features when demand spikes, and free users are cut first. On 2 March 2026 a user on Google's developer forum posted this reply from Deep Research: "I'm experiencing unusually high traffic right now and am at full capacity." Others in the thread reported the same failure that afternoon. Try again later, from a paid plan, or in another tool. ChatGPT Deep Research limit lists the caps on OpenAI's version.

Is Google AI Ultra worth it for Deep Research?

Only if you run reports most days and still hit Pro's weekly limit. Ultra at $99.99 gives 5x AI Pro's meter and the $199.99 tier gives 20x, and Ultra reports can include visuals such as charts. On the last printed counts, Ultra got 120 reports a day to Pro's 20. Google AI Pro limits shows what Pro's meter covers before you pay $80 more.
