ChatGPT Plus annual plan: OpenAI sells none, so a year costs $240, not $200

In brief

No. As of October 2026 OpenAI sells ChatGPT Plus only month to month at $20, and its help center says it does not support annual billing, so a year of Plus costs $240. Claude Pro, Google AI Pro and Perplexity Pro each cost about $200 billed yearly, and only ChatGPT Business gets an OpenAI annual rate.

Does ChatGPT Plus have an annual plan?

OpenAI's ChatGPT Plus help article asks "Is there an annual plan available?" Its answer, read on 11 October 2026, is one line: "Currently, we do not support annual billing or the option to pay for multiple months in advance for ChatGPT Plus subscriptions." Plus is $20 a month, billed monthly. The FAQ on OpenAI's pricing page says it from the other side: "We offer monthly plans for Go, Plus and Business and annual plans for Business and Enterprise."

Twelve payments of $20 make $240. Anthropic sells the same year of Claude Pro for "$200 billed up front" on its pricing page. Google AI Pro runs $199.99 a year, and a Perplexity Pro item sits on the US App Store at $200.00. So a Plus subscriber who stays all year pays $40 more than a Claude subscriber on the same $20 sticker. That's the cost of the missing option.

How much does ChatGPT Plus cost per year?

A year of ChatGPT Plus costs $240 in the US before tax. It's the only way to buy it: twelve monthly charges of $20. The table sets that next to the other plans in the chart, at US list prices checked on 11 October 2026. Three of the yearly prices come from somewhere other than the vendor's own page, and the next paragraph names each source.

Perplexity Pro$20$200 on the App Store ($17 a month on perplexity.ai)$240$36 to $40
SuperGrok$30$300 on the App Store$360$60

Perplexity's pricing page shows Pro at $17 a month "when billed annually" and no yearly total. That's $204 if the $17 isn't rounded. Anthropic rounds the same way, since its $17 stands for $200. The US App Store sells a Perplexity Pro item at $200.00 with no billing period shown. xAI's plans page has a "Save with annual" switch but prints only monthly prices to a visitor who isn't signed in. It also lists SuperGrok Heavy at $300 a month, a different plan. The App Store carries a separate SuperGrok item at $300.00, and Fello AI's pricing guide puts SuperGrok at $300 a year. Google's $199.99 dates from the June 2025 launch 9to5Google reported, and Office Watch still listed it after Google lifted AI Pro to 5 TB in April 2026. Google's own plans page only labels the switch "Save up to 16%".

ChatGPT Business is the one OpenAI plan with a yearly rate. A Standard seat is $25 a month, or $20 a month "billed annually", per OpenAI's billing and seats page. It needs two seats, so one person pays $480 a year on it, double a year of Plus. From two people up it costs the same per head as Plus, and ChatGPT Business vs Plus prices it at one, two and five seats.

Can you buy a yearly ChatGPT Plus on the App Store?

Not as a plan OpenAI documents. The US App Store listing for ChatGPT, read on 11 October 2026, shows two in-app purchases named "ChatGPT Plus": one at $19.99 and one at $200.00. Apple doesn't print a billing period next to either. App Pricing Lab's tracker logged the same pair on 23 March 2026. OpenAI's help center never mentions a $200 Plus.

Other apps' listings make a $200 item look like a year. Claude's App Store page names it: "Claude Pro - Annual" at $214.99, which is $14.99 more than Anthropic charges for the same year on the web. Perplexity lists Pro at $20.00 and at $200.00. Grok lists SuperGrok at $30.00 and at $300.00, next to a SuperGrok Heavy item at $300.00. And in July 2025 Android Authority found code for annual and monthly Plus subscriptions in ChatGPT beta 1.2025.196, and guessed $200 a year.

We didn't buy it, so we can't say what the $200 item is. If your iPhone offers you a yearly Plus, read the renewal period on Apple's confirmation sheet before you pay. OpenAI's refund page sends every App Store refund to Apple. Google Play's listing shows no item prices, so we couldn't check it. We found no OpenAI page that lists a yearly Plus price for any country.

Is paying yearly for an AI plan worth it?

A yearly plan pays off only if you'd keep the subscription for at least 10 months. Claude Pro's $200 is 10 months at $20, and the same math holds for Perplexity Pro and Google AI Pro. Quit in month eight and you've paid $40 more than the monthly route.

Refunds are the other half of the deal. Perplexity refunds an annual Pro purchase only within 72 hours outside the EU, UK, Turkey, South Korea and Brazil, with "No exceptions for requests after this period." Anthropic's refund page opens with "all payments are non-refundable", apart from its terms and local law. Plus is the opposite trade. There's no discount, and you can leave any month if you cancel at least 24 hours before renewal (how to cancel ChatGPT Plus).

Sure of a full year with one assistant? Google AI Pro at $199.99 is the cheapest year in the table, and the App Store lists it with 5 TB of storage. If Plus is the one you want, $240 is the price. No route we checked lowers it.

What else does $240 a year buy?

Whizi, which publishes this page, sells its Pro plan at $19.99 a month billed annually at $239.88, 12 cents under a year of Plus. That one subscription puts Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet and ChatGPT Sol in one app, with side by side compare. Starter is $131.88 a year for ChatGPT Luna, Claude Haiku and Whizi AI. Here's where it loses: Pro's 2,500 monthly credits buy 125 ChatGPT Sol messages a month, while OpenAI's usage table estimates 15 to 150 Sol messages per five-hour window on Plus. If you live in ChatGPT all day, Plus gives you far more of it. Whizi pricing lists all three plans, and the AI subscription statistics page prices 19 paid tiers by the month.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay for ChatGPT Plus a year in advance?

No. OpenAI says it doesn't support annual billing or paying for several months in advance on Plus, as of October 2026, so every Plus subscriber pays $20 a month. ChatGPT Business is the only OpenAI plan you can pay for yearly, at $20 a seat a month with a minimum of two seats.

Will OpenAI launch an annual ChatGPT Plus plan?

OpenAI hasn't said. Android Authority found code for annual Plus subscriptions in a July 2025 beta and guessed $200 a year, but 15 months later OpenAI's help center still says annual billing isn't supported. A $200 ChatGPT Plus item sits on the US App Store with no stated billing period, so check the renewal period if you buy on an iPhone.

Is ChatGPT Plus cheaper on iPhone?

By one cent. The US App Store lists a ChatGPT Plus item at $19.99 against $20 a month on the web, as of October 2026, so a year comes to about $240 either way. Apple bills App Store subscriptions and handles their refunds, so you cancel and claim refunds through your Apple account, not through OpenAI.
