ChatGPT Go vs Google AI Plus: Plus costs $4.99 to Go's $8 and adds 400 GB, but Go runs the smarter model

In brief

Google AI Plus is the better buy for most people. It costs $4.99 a month in the US against $8 for ChatGPT Go, and adds 400 GB of storage and video. Go wins on the model: OpenAI's Luna scores 38 to 34 on the Artificial Analysis index against Gemini Flash, the best model Plus keeps after 13 November 2026.

Which is better, ChatGPT Go or Google AI Plus?

Google AI Plus wins more rows, and ChatGPT Go wins the ones about the chat itself. We read both plan pages on 18 October 2026 and put the nine rows they share side by side. Plus is better on five, Go on three, and one is a split.

We built the table from OpenAI's plan table, its ChatGPT Go help article, Google's US subscriptions page and its Gemini limits page. The two scores come from Artificial Analysis. It ran Luna at max effort and Flash at high effort. Neither app says which effort it uses.

The model row is the one that catches people out. OpenAI lists the same Luna model on Free and on Go, so $8 buys more of a model you already have. Google works the other way. Since 9 October 2026 its free tier has run on Auto, which sends most prompts to Flash-Lite. Plus gets Flash.

Is Google AI Plus cheaper than ChatGPT Go in every country?

No. Google AI Plus costs less than ChatGPT Go in 6 of the 8 App Store markets we read on 18 October 2026. In India and Indonesia the two cost the same.

Each price is the monthly item in the In-App Purchases list of Apple's ChatGPT and Google Gemini listings for that country. US prices are before sales tax. Over a year in the US, Plus costs $59.88 and Go costs $96, so Plus saves you $36.12. You can't cut the Go price with a yearly plan, either. OpenAI's help center says "we do not support annual billing or the option to pay for multiple months in advance."

Does Google AI Plus still include Gemini Pro?

Only until 13 November 2026. Google told Plus subscribers by email in October. 9to5Google printed it: "Starting on 13 November 2026, the ability to select Pro models in both the Gemini app and AI Mode in Google Search will only be available to Google AI Pro subscribers and above." After that, Plus keeps only Flash and Flash-Lite. Your old Pro chats stay, and you can go on in them with another model.

The newest Gemini skips Plus too. Google's US subscriptions page tells anyone looking for Gemini 4 Argon to pick AI Pro or AI Ultra. So from mid November, neither cheap plan has its maker's top model. OpenAI's table marks every Sol model "No" for Go, and Sol starts on ChatGPT Plus at $20. Gemini Pro starts on Google AI Pro at $19.99. ChatGPT Go vs Plus covers what the $12 step up buys from OpenAI.

Is ChatGPT Go or Google AI Plus better for coding?

ChatGPT Go is better for coding. OpenAI gives Go limited Codex access and limited use of its Terra model in Work and Codex on the desktop, the same as Free. Its reasoning mode reads 256K tokens. That's twice the 128K window Google gives Plus. And Google's US Plus card lists no Antigravity, its agent coding tool, as of October 2026.

Flash is the faster model, though, at least in the API. Artificial Analysis clocked it at 220 tokens a second, against 126 for Luna. A 500 token answer took it about 18 seconds, against 78 for Luna at max effort. Those are API runs, not the apps, so treat them as a guide to app speed. For a long file, or a bug the model has to think through, the bigger Go window counts for more.

Which plan is better for images, video and storage?

Google AI Plus is better for video and storage, and the two are even on images. The Plus card includes video in the Gemini app and 200 Google Flow credits a month. OpenAI's plan table has no video line for Go.

Those credits don't go far. Google's Flow credits page prices a Veo 3.1 clip at 10 credits on Lite, 20 on Fast and 100 on Quality. So the 200 monthly credits buy 20 Lite clips, 10 Fast clips or 2 Quality clips. Every account also gets 50 credits a day. Google says "Unused monthly Google Flow credits do not roll over to the next month."

Neither company prints an image count. OpenAI promises Go "More image creation" than Free, and Google lists image generation and editing on every tier, Free included. Storage is where Plus wins most clearly, with 400 GB across Gmail, Drive and Photos. Go comes with none at all. For scale, Apple's US store sells the 100 GB Google plan on its own for $1.99.

Does ChatGPT Go have ads?

Yes, it can. The Go card on OpenAI's pricing page says "This plan may include ads." Its ads help article says ads may appear on Free and Go, and that testing began in the US on 9 February 2026. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu have no ads. OpenAI doesn't show ads to accounts it thinks are under 18.

The rollout is uneven. The Go help article still says "We may start testing ads in ChatGPT Go in the future," while the ads article already lists Go. Google's Plus card doesn't mention ads at all. If an ad free chat matters to you, that's a point for Plus.

Should you buy ChatGPT Go or Google AI Plus?

Buy Google AI Plus if you live in Google's apps or want storage, and ChatGPT Go if you chat all day or write code. Each plan has a case where it loses, in the last row below.

Pick ChatGPT Go ifPick Google AI Plus if
You chat all day (unlimited text chats against 2x the free limit)You want the lower price ($4.99 against $8 in the US)
You write code (Codex and a 256K reasoning window)You need storage (400 GB across Gmail, Drive and Photos)
You want the higher scoring model (38 against 34)You make short videos (200 Flow credits a month)
You're in India or Indonesia, where price doesn't decide itYou don't want ads
Where Go loses: the same model as Free, and it may show adsWhere Plus loses: Flash only from 13 November, and a weekly cap

Whizi doesn't beat either plan on price. Whizi Starter costs $15.99 a month, and both cheap plans together cost $12.99. Whizi fits one case: you want Gemini Pro after 13 November and GPT on the same login. Whizi Pro carries Gemini Pro at 10 credits a message, so its 2,500 monthly credits buy 250 Gemini Pro answers, next to Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet and GPT. It costs $29.99 a month, with a first week for $1.99. It has no storage, no Flow credits and no Gemini in Gmail. The Gemini in Whizi docs list what each model costs.

Workflow checklist
  • Check your local price first, since Plus costs the same as Go in India and Indonesia
  • Pick Go if you chat all day or code, since its reasoning mode reads 256K tokens
  • Pick Plus if you need storage, since it adds 400 GB across Gmail, Drive and Photos
  • Plan for Flash only on Plus from 13 November 2026, or budget $19.99 for Google AI Pro
  • Expect ads on Go, which OpenAI says may appear on Free and Go
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Go or Google AI Plus better than Claude Pro?

Claude Pro is a bigger plan than both, and it costs more than both put together. Anthropic charges $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly at $200, per claude.com read 18 October 2026. It sells no paid plan below Pro, and Claude Free includes Sonnet and Haiku. Stay on Go or Plus if you want to spend under $10. Is Claude Pro worth it covers what the $20 buys.

What happens when you hit the limit on Google AI Plus?

You wait for it to refresh. Google says your limit "refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit", and the limit counts how complex your prompts are, the model you use and the length of the chat. ChatGPT Go has no cap on everyday text chats, only on tools like images and uploads, as of October 2026. Gemini usage limit reached explains each cap.

Can you pay for ChatGPT Go in your own currency?

In some countries. OpenAI's help center says Go is bought in US dollars, with local currency billing in a limited set of countries. In Apple's App Store you pay the local price, such as ₹399 in India or £6.99 in the UK, as of October 2026. Paying for AI when your card is declined covers the usual checkout failures.

Is it worth buying both ChatGPT Go and Google AI Plus?

Yes, if you want GPT and Gemini and want to spend under $20. The pair costs $12.99 a month in the US, or $155.88 a year, which is less than ChatGPT Plus at $20 or Google AI Pro at $19.99. You get two smaller models, though, not a top one. The AI cost calculator prices your own mix.
