How to downgrade Google AI Pro to AI Plus or a storage plan without losing files

In brief

Downgrade Google AI Pro at one.google.com: open Manage membership, then Change membership plan, then a plan under Downgrade options, See all benefits, Yes, continue, pick the payment method and Subscribe. AI Plus keeps 400 GB for $4.99 a month and a storage tier keeps 100 GB for $1.99, against 5 TB on Pro and 15 GB after a cancellation.

The downgrade is a storage decision with an AI plan attached

Google AI Pro isn't a Gemini subscription with a billing page. Google's own help says "You can subscribe to a Google AI plan through Google One", and every management action, including a downgrade, is a Google One membership change. That reframes the question. Dropping AI Pro means picking a smaller Google One plan, and the plans differ mostly in storage.

Leaving AI Pro cuts 5 TB of storage to 400 GB, 100 GB or 15 GB

Prices are US dollar figures as of September 2026. AI Pro is $19.99 with 5 TB on Google's own plan page. Google cut AI Plus to $4.99 and doubled it to 400 GB in June 2026, and the entry storage tier is $1.99 for 100 GB. Google charges different amounts in some countries, so the plan picker is the final word for yours.

So the first step is the storage figure at one.google.com, before the plan picker. Under 15 GB and every option including cancellation is safe. Between 15 GB and 100 GB, the $1.99 tier keeps you clear. Between 100 GB and 400 GB, AI Plus is the floor. Above 400 GB, a downgrade means a cleanup first.

The path, in Google's own labels

Google's Gemini help article on managing a Google AI plan, read on 1 September 2026, gives the desktop path to change plans. It's Google One, then Manage membership, then Change membership plan, then a plan under "Upgrade options" or "Downgrade options", then See all benefits, then "Yes, continue", then select a payment method, then Subscribe.

Two things in that list trip people up. Google's note that "If there's no downgrade option, you're on the lowest plan" means a missing Downgrade section isn't a bug. And the last button reads Subscribe on a downgrade, which reads like an upsell and isn't: it's the confirmation for the smaller plan.

On mobile the entry is Gemini app, Menu, your profile picture, Settings, Manage subscription, which hands off to Google One settings. If you bought the membership from a different app on iPhone, Google says that button "opens your subscriptions in Apple settings", and the plan change is made there, with Apple's pricing.

When the smaller plan starts, and what Google does not say

Google's plan update article, read on 22 September 2026, states three timing rules. On a downgrade: "your current plan remains active until the end of your billing cycle. The downgrade takes effect at the start of your next billing cycle." Switching from monthly to annual "takes effect immediately", with the remaining monthly time credited toward the annual cost. Switching from annual to monthly "takes effect at the end of your current annual term".

So Pro to AI Plus on a monthly plan means the 5 TB stays until the next billing date and the 400 GB applies from it. Google One purchases are non-refundable in most countries, so a mid cycle downgrade isn't a route to a partial refund either. How to get a Google AI Pro refund covers what is.

One more Google specific line. Because an annual to monthly change waits for the end of the annual term, you can't shorten an annual AI Pro plan by moving to a monthly rung. On an annual plan, read the confirmation screen's end date before you press Subscribe.

Over quota: what happens to files above the new allowance

When an allowance shrinks, Google keeps every file and freezes the account for new content. Everything already stored stays readable and downloadable, Drive refuses new uploads, Photos stops backing up, and under Google's storage policy Gmail can eventually stop accepting incoming mail.

So the cleanup happens before the downgrade applies, while the 5 TB is still yours. Google's storage manager at one.google.com shows what is taking the space; the usual order is emptied Drive trash, large Gmail attachments, then Photos, where the storage saver setting is the biggest single lever. How to cancel Google AI Pro has the same playbook for the harder case of dropping to 15 GB.

If you share the plan with a family group, the downgrade shrinks the shared pool for everyone in it, and their over quota clocks start with yours. Tell them first.

What you keep and lose at each rung

AI Plus, $4.99. 400 GB, Gemini in the app with more usage than free, and the AI features in Gmail and Docs at the lower tier. What goes: the full Gemini Pro allowance, the largest context window, and the Pro only tools such as Antigravity and Gemini Spark. ChatGPT Go vs Google AI Plus is the detailed read on what the cheap tier cuts.

Storage only, from $1.99. 100 GB and no AI benefits beyond what the free Gemini tier gives everyone. This is the right rung when the storage was the reason for the plan and Gemini was a bonus.

Free. 15 GB and the free Gemini app. Chat history stays on the Google account either way.

And if you're leaving AI Pro because you want a strong model without the Google bundle, Whizi carries Gemini 3.7 Flash at 2 credits a message and Gemini 3.1 Pro at 10. Both sit next to GPT, Claude Sonnet, Grok and DeepSeek on its Pro plan, $29.99 a month or $19.99 billed yearly. It has no storage and no Gmail integration, which is the whole trade, and Whizi vs Gemini Advanced says so plainly.

Workflow checklist
  • Read your storage usage at one.google.com before touching the plan picker
  • Downgrade under Manage membership, Change membership plan, Downgrade options, and press Subscribe to confirm
  • Change an Apple billed membership in iOS Settings, Subscriptions, from the app you subscribed with
  • Clean up to below the new allowance while the 5 TB is still active
  • Warn family group members, because the shared pool shrinks with your plan
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I downgrade Google AI Pro to Google AI Plus?

At one.google.com choose Manage membership, then Change membership plan, then AI Plus under Downgrade options, See all benefits, Yes, continue, select a payment method and Subscribe. AI Plus is $4.99 a month with 400 GB. Google says that if no downgrade option appears you're already on the lowest plan.

When does a Google One downgrade take effect?

Google states that a downgrade keeps your current plan active until the end of the billing cycle and takes effect at the start of the next one. Annual to monthly changes take effect at the end of the annual term, and monthly to annual immediately with credit for the remaining time. So plan for the smaller allowance at the next billing date.

Will I lose my files if I downgrade Google AI Pro?

No files are deleted. If you're above the new allowance the account goes over quota: existing files stay readable and downloadable, but Drive refuses new uploads, Photos stops backing up and Gmail can eventually stop accepting mail. Clean up below the new limit before the change applies.

Can I keep the storage and drop just the AI?

Yes. The storage only Google One tiers start at $1.99 a month for 100 GB. Pick one under Downgrade options. You keep the free Gemini app, and your Gemini chat history stays on the Google account.

I subscribed on my iPhone. Why does Manage subscription open Apple settings?

Because the membership was bought through the App Store, so Apple bills it. Google says Manage subscription opens your Apple subscriptions when you subscribed from a different app; pick the app you used and change the plan there, at Apple's pricing.
