Cursor vs Claude Code: Claude Pro includes Claude Code for $20, while Cursor now bills Claude at API price on top of $30

In brief

Claude Code is the better buy if you want Claude models, and Cursor is the better editor if you want many models. As of November 2026, Claude Pro at $20 a month includes Claude Code with Claude Opus 5.5. Since 12 October 2026, Cursor bills every Claude model at API list price on top of its $30 Premium plan.

Which is better, Cursor or Claude Code?

Claude Code is better for handing Claude a whole task, and Cursor is better for editing code yourself with help from many models. The price gap is new. Since 12 October 2026, no Cursor plan on sale includes Claude. Here's how the two compare, read from each company's own pages on 1 and 2 November 2026:

Pick Claude Code if Claude is the model you want, since a Claude plan is now the cheapest way to run it. Pick Cursor if you want a full editor with its Tab autocomplete, or if you switch between Grok, GPT and Gemini. And if you like Cursor's editor but want Claude, run both. Claude Code installs inside Cursor, as the last sections show.

How much does Claude cost in Cursor vs Claude Code?

Claude costs more in Cursor for anyone who codes more than a few days a month. Cursor's models page lists Claude Opus 5.5 at $4 in and $20 out per million tokens. That's the same as Anthropic's API price, and Cursor charges it on top of the plan. A Claude plan is a flat fee. We drew both, using Anthropic's own average for a day of Claude Code:

Claude in Cursor passes Claude Ultra's $200 after 13 days a month
06012018024030005101520days of coding a month, at Anthropic's $13 a day average (November 2026)US dollars a monthCursor Premium plus Claude at API priceClaude Pro, $20Claude Max, $100Claude Ultra, $200

The $13 comes from Anthropic's cost docs: "Across enterprise deployments, the average cost is around $13 per developer per active day." At that rate, Cursor Premium plus Claude costs $30 plus $13 a day. It passes Claude Max after 5.4 days and Claude Ultra after 13.1. Twenty days comes to $290, which is $90 more than Ultra.

There are two things to keep in mind. The $13 is a Claude Code average, and your use of Claude in Cursor may burn more or fewer tokens. And a flat line holds only while you stay inside that plan's limits. Anthropic doesn't say how many API dollars a plan's limits are worth, so Pro at $20 won't carry 20 heavy days. The full plan math is in Claude Code pricing.

What changed in Cursor's pricing in October 2026?

Cursor's plans became The X Subscription on 12 October 2026, and its $20 Pro plan moved to a list for existing customers only. SpaceXSI's announcement puts Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium into one plan, and it prices Premium at $30 against $90 a month for SuperGrok, Cursor Pro and X Premium+ bought apart. It also says: "Each X Subscription plan includes at least twice as much coding usage with our models as the comparable Cursor plan." The catch is the word "our". Here are the plans on Cursor's pricing page:

Plan, read 1 November 2026Price a monthIncluded usageClaude, GPT and Gemini
Free$0Limited agent and Chat requestsNot available
Plus$81x, a shared Grok and Cursor poolNot available: "Only Grok models"
Premium$304x PlusAt API list price, from prepaid credit
Super$10015x PlusAt API list price
Ultra$20050x PlusAt API list price
Teams$30, $100 or $200 a seatSame tiers, per seatAt API list price

Cursor's pricing docs say it plainly: "Third-party models like Claude, GPT, and Gemini aren't part of the included pool." The pool covers Grok 4.7, 4.6 and 4.5 and Composer 2.5, and it refreshes weekly. Past it, you buy top-ups of prepaid credit. You can also set a monthly cap on that extra spend.

Existing subscribers keep their old plans. The docs say Hobby, Start, Pro, Pro+, Ultra and the older Teams seats "continue for existing customers." So if you're still on Cursor Pro at $20, you don't have to move. Many comparisons on page one still quote that $20 Cursor Pro price, but a new buyer can't get it.

How much does Claude Code cost on each plan?

Claude Code costs $20 a month on Claude Pro, $100 on Max and $200 on Ultra, as of November 2026. Every paid Claude plan includes it, and the free plan doesn't. Anthropic has renamed Max 20x to Ultra. Its help article says: "The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan." We read every row from Anthropic's pricing page on 1 November 2026:

Claude plan, read 1 November 2026Price a monthClaude Code usage
Free$0Not included
Pro$20, or $17 billed yearly ($200)The baseline: a 5-hour session and a weekly limit
Max$100, monthly only5x Pro every 5 hours and every week
Ultra (formerly Max 20x)$200, monthly only10x Pro every week, and no 5-hour limit once verified
Team, Standard seat$20 a seat billed yearly, $25 monthlyMore than Pro, per member
Team, Premium seat$100 a seat billed yearly, $125 monthly5x a Standard seat
Enterprise$20 a seat billed yearly, plus usage at API ratesSet by your admin

What you do in chat counts too. Anthropic's Claude Code help page says the limits "are shared across Claude and Claude Code." So a long chat in the morning leaves less for the terminal. Past the limit, you can turn on usage credits billed at API rates, or you wait for the reset. Claude Code usage limit explains when each window comes back, and Claude Pro vs Claude Max covers the jump from $20 to $100.

Which models can Cursor and Claude Code use?

Claude Code runs only Anthropic's Claude models, and Cursor runs models from at least eight labs. Anthropic's model docs say that on Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, Enterprise and the API, Claude Code "defaults to Opus 5.5." You can switch to Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 or Fable 5.1. Opus 5.5 starts at medium effort unless you raise it.

Cursor lists models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, DeepSeek, Moonshot, Z.ai and Meta, plus Grok and its own Composer 2.5, which it files under Cursor. Only Grok and Composer come out of what you pay for the plan. Everything else bills per token, so in Cursor the model you pick sets your bill as well as your answer.

The model matters more than the tool. On the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, read on 2 November 2026, Claude Code with Opus 5.5 at max effort scored 62 at $11.42 of API spend a task. That was the top score. Grok 4.7, the model Cursor's plans include, scored 47 in SpaceXSI's own Grok Build, at $9.48. None of the 16 agents on the public chart is Cursor's, so the index doesn't measure Cursor head to head. That run used max effort, well above Claude Code's medium default. Claude vs Gemini for coding runs the same index for Google's side.

Does Claude Code work in Cursor?

Yes. Claude Code installs in Cursor as an extension, and it bills your Claude plan, not Cursor's pool. Anthropic's IDE docs give an "Install for Cursor" link, and you can also search for "Claude Code" in Cursor's Extensions view. After that, it opens in its own tab with inline diffs, the same way it does in VS Code, per Anthropic's overview.

This is how most people use both. You keep Cursor as the editor for Tab completions and quick edits. Then you hand bigger, multi-file jobs to Claude Code. The cheapest version of that setup is Cursor Free plus Claude Pro, at $20 a month. If you add Cursor Plus for Grok, it's $28. There's one trap to watch for. If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set in your shell, Anthropic says Claude Code "will use this API key" in place of your Claude subscription, and you pay API rates.

Is Cursor still relevant with Claude Code?

Yes, Cursor is still the better tool if you want an editor first or more than one lab's models. Its docs call Tab "Cursor's AI-powered autocomplete," and Claude Code has no autocomplete at all. Cursor also has its own terminal agent. Its CLI docs say Cursor CLI "lets you interact with AI agents directly from your terminal to write, review, and modify code."

Claude Code isn't only a terminal tool either. Its desktop app can "run multiple sessions side by side," and its web version runs "with no local setup," per Anthropic's overview. But Claude Code loses in three places. It can't run GPT, Gemini or Grok. It doesn't autocomplete as you type. And its limits are shared with Claude chat, so a heavy chat day costs you coding time. Cursor loses on Claude itself. If Claude is the model you want, Cursor charges you per token for it after a $30 plan, while Anthropic includes it from $20.

Where Whizi fits

Whizi includes neither Cursor nor Claude Code. It's a chat app. It can't open your repo, run a terminal or edit your files, and it has no API. It fits one job: asking two models the same coding question before you commit to a tool. On Whizi Pro, at $29.99 a month, side by side model chats put Claude Opus 5.5 next to GPT-6.1 Sol or DeepSeek, and credits per message vary by model. Compare models side by side shows how it works. For the coding itself, buy Claude Pro or Cursor.

Workflow checklist
  • If Claude is the model you want, start on Claude Pro at $20 and use Claude Code
  • If you want Cursor's editor too, install the Claude Code extension in Cursor Free
  • On Cursor Premium, set a monthly cap on extra usage before you pick a Claude model
  • Check for an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in your shell before you blame your Claude plan
  • Still on Cursor Pro at $20? Your old plan keeps working, so don't switch in a hurry
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is anything better than Claude Code?

Not on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index. Claude Code with Claude Opus 5.5 at max effort topped the public chart at 62, read 2 November 2026. Antigravity CLI with Gemini 4 Carbon and Claude Code with Sonnet 5.5 came next at 59. None of the 16 agents shown is Cursor's.

Can you still get Cursor Pro for $20 a month?

Not as a new buyer. Cursor's $20 Pro plan was replaced by The X Subscription on 12 October 2026, with Plus at $8 and Premium at $30. Existing Pro subscribers keep their plan, and SpaceXSI says "Nothing changes for existing SuperGrok, Cursor, or X Premium subscribers."

Is Claude Code free?

No. Claude Code isn't on Claude's free plan, so it starts at $20 a month on Claude Pro, or you can pay per token with an API key, as of November 2026. Cursor's free plan gives you limited agent requests, and its docs mark third-party models like Claude "Not available" on it.

Which is easier for a beginner, Cursor or Claude Code?

Cursor is the easier start if you've used VS Code, since it's a full editor with Tab autocomplete. Claude Code no longer needs a terminal, though. Its desktop app includes Claude Code, and its web version runs in the browser, both on a paid Claude plan from $20, as of November 2026.
