ChatGPT response not loading: "This response couldn't load" usually means the answer is saved, and what fixed it for 14 people

How do you fix a ChatGPT response that is not loading?

Don't resend the prompt yet. Three of the 14 posters below found the failed reply intact on another device. These six steps run from the cheapest to the slowest, as of October 2026.

1. Open the same chat on your phone or another browser. Three people in the reports below saw the very replies that had failed there. Copy the answer out.
2. Reload once. Press Ctrl+Shift+R (Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac) or reload the desktop app. One poster got replies back after several refreshes, another got nothing.
3. On a paid plan, switch the chat from GPT-6 to GPT-5.6 Sol in the model picker, then press Regenerate. Five of the 14 posters fixed it this way. Free and Go plans don't include GPT-5.6 Sol, so step 1 is their fix.
4. Turn off whatever filters your traffic. A privacy extension, a firewall and Google Family Link each caused it for one person. A private window with extensions off tests the first, and a VPN or office proxy is worth switching off too.
5. Check status.openai.com for an open incident on Conversations. It posted nothing for this message from 7 to 18 October 2026.
6. Send OpenAI the chat link, the time with your time zone, and the app or browser. OpenAI Support asked for exactly that on 12 October 2026, in a forum thread on a related load error.

We read the nine threads on OpenAI's developer forum and OpenAI's GitHub we could find that quote the message, from the first report on 7 October to 18 October 2026. Fourteen people said what they tried. The chart counts the first thing that worked for each one. Steps 1 and 3 come first because they're the only ones that can't make anything worse.

Is the answer lost when ChatGPT says this response couldn't load?

Usually not. Three posters found the very replies that had failed on another device, so those answers were saved and only their display broke. A poster on a Chromebook wrote on 9 October that the replies were "visible when we access the same account from another computer". One poster out of 14 said a new device made no difference.

We compiled the table on 18 October 2026 from seven forum threads and one GitHub issue, keeping only people who said what they tried. Seven of the 14 tried a second device. Six had a working ChatGPT there, and three saw the replies that had failed. The seventh said a new device made no difference.

So the answer is probably in your account right now. Don't delete the chat or run Delete all chats to clear the error. If no device will show the reply, ChatGPT's data export is the slow last resort: Settings, Data controls, Export. OpenAI says the export "can take up to 7 days to arrive", and the download link expires 24 hours after it lands (OpenAI help center).

Why does ChatGPT show this response couldn't load?

ChatGPT shows it when a reply exists but the app can't draw it, and in October 2026 that happened mostly with GPT-6 on desktop and web. OpenAI launched GPT-6 on 7 October 2026 with what its release notes call Intelligent UI. In OpenAI's words, ChatGPT "can now combine text, visuals, and interactive elements to fit your question". The first report of the error came the same day.

Every one of the six reports that named a model named GPT-6. None said GPT-5.6 failed. And the three filter fixes all point the same way: when a firewall, a privacy extension or a parental control blocks part of OpenAI's site, the text arrives but the page can't finish building the reply. That's our reading of the reports, not an OpenAI diagnosis. OpenAI hasn't published one.

Paid plans run GPT-6 Sol and Free and Go run GPT-6 Luna, per the same notes. GPT-5.6 Sol is still there on paid plans. OpenAI's GPT-6 model guide says "GPT-5.6 Sol remains a separate option in the model menu" and that the rollout "does not retire older selectable models", as of 18 October 2026. The same guide says "Free and Go plans do not include GPT-5.6 Sol", so on those plans the second device is the route back.

The message reads the same way in other languages. Chinese posters quote 无法加载此回复 in the Simplified Chinese interface. A Japanese write up from 11 October quotes この回答を読み込めませんでした (SmartScope). A Russian poster on GitHub quotes Не удалось загрузить этот ответ. All three say the same thing: this one reply couldn't load.

Which ChatGPT loading message are you seeing?

The wording tells you how much failed. "This response couldn't load" covers one reply. The messages below cover a whole chat, part of an app, or a reply that never got made, as of October 2026.

One more is easy to confuse with this one. If the reply stopped partway under "Connection interrupted. Waiting for the complete answer", your browser lost the live stream while the reply may still be running. The ChatGPT connection interrupted page covers that case. When is it OpenAI's side, and when is it yours?

It's OpenAI's side when the reply fails on every device and network, or on GPT-5.6 as well as GPT-6. It's yours when one device fails and another works. The phone test splits them in a minute: turn off wifi and open the chat in the ChatGPT phone app.

Don't wait for the status page to tell you. We read OpenAI's status feed on 18 October 2026. It posted 14 incidents from 7 to 16 October, and 2 touched ChatGPT Conversations: errors for some APAC users on 8 October, and the Android content message on 9 October. The only title naming GPT-6 was about GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex and Work. None mentioned replies failing to load, while new forum posts arrived almost daily.

OpenAI's error message guide doesn't list this message either, as of 18 October 2026. Its closest advice is for a page that stops showing content: "Disable extensions or content blockers that may interfere with the page". If you contact support, OpenAI's guide asks for a HAR file and console errors with timestamps, the model, and the conversation link. OpenAI Support's forum reply of 12 October asked for one affected chat link, when it last failed with your time zone, and the app or browser.

What if your replies keep failing to load and the work can't wait?
