What does Conversation not found mean in ChatGPT?
Conversation not found means ChatGPT looked up the chat's ID and found nothing your current login can open. OpenAI hasn't documented it. Its help page for ChatGPT error messages lists eight errors, from "Something went wrong" to "Phone number required", and this one isn't there. So we went where people report it. On 18 October 2026 we read every ChatGPT thread with the phrase on OpenAI's community forum: the 22 its search returns, plus a 63 post thread from April 2023 that the search misses. Then we sorted the 23 by what the poster was doing.
The file wave ended in 2023. Its six threads, and the November 2023 outage thread, quote the longer "Message in conversation not found". Two of the Temporary Chat seven are from February 2024, posted by people with chat history turned off. Temporary Chat reports kept coming for two years after that. Here's each cause, as of October 2026, and whether the chat comes back:
| Cause | What you see | Fix | Chat comes back? |
|---|---|---|---|
| The chat was deleted, by you, by Delete all chats or with its project | An old link or bookmark shows the error, and Search can't find the chat | None | No. OpenAI schedules it for permanent deletion within 30 days |
| It was a Temporary Chat | The error on your second message, or after you left the chat | Copy what you need, start a new chat | No, unless you saved it to your history first |
| You signed in another way | The sidebar looks empty or unfamiliar | Sign in with the method you first used | Yes, in the original account |
| You're in another workspace | A work or school name in the profile menu | Switch workspace from the profile menu | Yes, while you still have access |
| A shared link was deleted | A link someone sent you won't open | Ask the sender for a new link | Only for the owner |
| OpenAI's servers | Errors on many chats at once, an incident on status.openai.com | Wait for the resolved notice | Yes |
| A very long chat | Only your longest chats fail to load | Report it to OpenAI Support | Yes, once OpenAI fixes it |
How do you fix Conversation not found in ChatGPT?
You fix Conversation not found by working from the cheapest step to the slowest. The first four come from OpenAI's own list for missing chats, updated in October 2026.
- Reload. Refresh the page, or force quit the app. If that fails, sign out and back in.
- Check the account and workspace. Settings, then Account, shows the email you're in. The profile menu shows the workspace.
- Search for the chat. Use a word you remember. Archived chats stay searchable, and Settings, then Data controls, then Archived chats lists them.
- Open status.openai.com. An open incident on ChatGPT Conversations means you wait.
- Try chatgpt.com in a browser. If the chat opens there and not in the app, update the app.
- Turn off extensions and your VPN. A private window with extensions off is the quick test. If that fails, clear cookies and site data for chatgpt.com, as OpenAI's error page suggests.
- Start a new chat. Paste in what you still have.
Steps 1 to 5 cover the four causes that come back. Nothing on the list brings back a deleted chat or an unsaved Temporary Chat. Login methods are the trap that looks like deletion. OpenAI's login help page says "Different sign-in methods (email/password vs Continue with Google/Microsoft/Apple) can create separate accounts", and "OpenAI doesn't automatically merge accounts." If you used Apple's Hide My Email, your account email ends in @privaterelay.appleid.com.
Why does Temporary Chat say Conversation not found?
Temporary Chat says Conversation not found because of a bug users have reported since at least 7 September 2024. One poster traced it in the address bar. The chat starts at chatgpt.com/?temporary-chat=true, switches to a regular chatgpt.com/c/ address after the first reply, and then the next message returns "Conversation not found" (thread). A forum moderator said that day it had been raised with OpenAI.
It didn't go away. Users posted the same error in one 2024 thread in April 2025, August 2025, January 2026 and June 2026. On 16 September 2026 OpenAI Support answered there: "We'll pass this along for review." It asked anyone still hitting it to email support with the time, the browser or app, the device, screenshots and the steps that trigger it (thread). An August 2026 Android report found another route in: switch to another app and back, and the temporary chat turns up in history as "New Chat" and fails.
A temporary chat you never saved is gone for good. OpenAI's Temporary Chat page says an unsaved one "cannot be reopened from history after you leave it." So copy anything you need before you send the next message. If you might come back to the chat, save it to your history, which turns it into a regular chat. A related wording, "Conversation key not found", turned up in six threads in January and February 2024, five of them from people with chat history turned off. In October 2025 one user got it after opening two temporary chats at once.
Is Conversation not found the same as Unable to load conversation?
No. "Conversation not found" says the chat isn't there for you. "Unable to load conversation", followed by the chat's ID, means ChatGPT knows the chat and couldn't open it, and OpenAI fixed one cause of that in September 2026 and eased another. No OpenAI help page explains either one. This table comes from the forum threads and OpenAI's status page, read on 18 October 2026:
| Message | Where people saw it | What it turned out to be |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation not found | Inside a chat after sending, or opening an old link | The chat ID is missing for this login: deleted, temporary, another account or an outage |
| Unable to load conversation, then an ID | Opening a chat from the sidebar or a link | A load failure. In 2026, long chats (fixed 16 September) and some single accounts |
| Could not load this ChatGPT conversation | ChatGPT on the web, late September to October 2026 | HTTP 429 rate limiting on history requests. OpenAI cut those requests on 29 September |
| Message in conversation not found | Custom GPTs and file uploads, November 2023 | One message missing from the chat. A refresh fixed it for some users |
| Conversation key not found | Chat history off, January and February 2024 | The temporary mode losing track of the chat |
| This content is unavailable in this version of the app | The ChatGPT Android app, 9 October 2026 | An old app version. OpenAI shipped the fix in the latest version |
If a "Too many requests" banner shows up next to a loading error, that's a separate limit on how fast you open chats.
Is Conversation not found an OpenAI outage?
Conversation not found is sometimes an outage, and status.openai.com is where you check. We counted the 105 incidents in OpenAI's status history feed on 18 October 2026, dated 20 July to 16 October. Thirty two hit the ChatGPT Conversations component. None of their titles names this error.
The nearest was on 9 October 2026. Older versions of the Android app showed "This content is unavailable in this version of the app" in place of some content for about three and a half hours, and OpenAI told people to use ChatGPT on the web (incident). Outages produced this error before, too. On 13 April 2023 one forum thread took 59 posts in a single day from users whose every old chat said "Conversation not found" while new chats worked (thread).
The worst 2026 loading problems never got a status incident. From April, users' longest chats stopped opening on the web, Android and Windows, and shorter ones still loaded. OpenAI Support posted on 16 September that "The issue affecting access to older or longer conversations has since been fixed" (thread). From 27 September a second thread, now at 74 posts, reported chats failing to load across ChatGPT on the web. On 29 September OpenAI said it had stopped Chat and Work refreshing history after every turn, to ease the rate limits behind the 429 errors (thread). Reports in that thread continued to 14 October.
Can you get a ChatGPT chat back after Conversation not found?
You can get the chat back only if it still exists. Deleted means gone. OpenAI's help page on deleting chats is blunt: "You cannot restore a deleted chat in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support." A deleted chat leaves your view at once, and OpenAI schedules it for permanent deletion within 30 days. Deleting a project "permanently removes its chats and instructions", per OpenAI's projects page. And deleting a chat removes its shared link, per the shared links FAQ.
If the chat should exist, send OpenAI Support the chat's link and the time it failed. OpenAI staff told forum users on 30 September 2026 that the link or ID lets engineers find the chat in backend logs, and that sharing it "does not opt the conversation into model training."
Then keep a copy of the rest. In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Data controls, and under Export data select Export. OpenAI's export page says it can take up to 7 days, and the link expires 24 hours after it arrives. Self service export covers Free, Go, Plus and Pro, not Business or Enterprise. A ZIP is hard to search. Whizi, which publishes this page, imports the conversations.json from that export as searchable chats, and the import works on a free account (how it works). Where it loses: the copy lives in Whizi. It won't put a single chat back in ChatGPT.
- Reload ChatGPT, then sign out and back in
- Check the account email in Settings, Account and the workspace in the profile menu
- Search for the chat and check Settings, Data controls, Archived chats
- Look for an open Conversations incident on status.openai.com
- Open the chat on chatgpt.com in a browser and update the app if only the app fails
- Save a Temporary Chat to your history before you rely on it
- Export your ChatGPT data so the next missing chat still has a copy
Frequently asked questions
Why does the ChatGPT app say Conversation not found when the website works?
Because the app is the problem, usually an old version. Update it from the App Store or Google Play, then force quit and reopen it. On 9 October 2026 OpenAI told Android users on older versions to use ChatGPT on the web until the fix reached them. Is ChatGPT down shows whether other people hit errors at the same moment.
Is Conversation not found the same as Something went wrong?
No. "Something went wrong" is OpenAI's catch-all for a server or local setup problem, and its error help page lists it. "Conversation not found" points at one missing chat, and no OpenAI help page lists it. ChatGPT something went wrong covers the catch-all with 90 days of status data.
Why won't a shared ChatGPT link open?
Because the sender deleted the link, the chat or their account, or the link came from a work workspace. OpenAI's shared links FAQ says deleting a conversation removes its shared link, and links from Business and Enterprise workspaces "can be opened only by eligible members of the same workspace." Ask the sender for a new one. How to delete a ChatGPT account lists what else goes when an account is deleted.
What can I use while ChatGPT won't open my chats?
Claude or Gemini, which run on their own servers, so an OpenAI incident doesn't touch them. Neither can open your ChatGPT history, so paste in the part of the chat you need. What to use when ChatGPT is down compares the options you can switch to in under a minute.
