Which Grammarly alternative fits the way you write?
Pick by where your writing happens. If you type in Word, Gmail and Google Docs and want errors underlined as you go, you need an inline checker. If you paste a draft somewhere and ask for a rewrite, a chat app does more for the money. We read every price below on each vendor's own page on 31 October 2026, in US dollars unless marked.
| Option | Billed monthly | Billed yearly | Where it works | AI rewriting on that plan | Pick it if |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whizi Pro | $29.99 | $239.99 a year | A chat on the web and in mobile apps; you paste the text in | 2,500 credits a month; the Writing Copilot agent costs 1 credit a message | You mainly rewrite and draft in a chat and want Claude, GPT and Gemini too |
| Grammarly Pro (staying) | $30 | $144 ($12 a month) | Inline in Word, Google Docs, email clients and browsers | 2,000 AI prompts a month | You want mistakes caught as you type, in every app |
| LanguageTool Premium | €19.90 | €59.89 | Browser extension (Premium only), Windows, macOS and iOS apps | Unlimited rephrasing | You write in more than one language |
| ProWritingAid Premium | $30 | $120 ($10 a month), or $399 once | Web editor, Google Docs, Microsoft Office, desktop | Unlimited Rephrases | You edit long manuscripts or fiction |
| QuillBot Premium | $19.95 | $99.95 ($8.33 a month) | Web tools | Unlimited words in the paraphraser, 9 modes | Paraphrasing is most of the job |
| Wordtune Unlimited | Not on the default view | $9.99 a month billed annually ($6.99 in a sale on 31 October) | Chrome and Edge extensions | Unlimited rewrites | You want sentence rewrites without a chat |
| Hemingway Editor Plus | $10 | $100 ($8.33 a month) | Hemingway's web editor | 5,000 AI sentences a month | You want shorter, plainer sentences |
| ChatGPT Plus | $20 | Billed monthly only | OpenAI's apps | Higher limits than Free | You only want GPT |
| Claude Pro | $20 | $200 ($17 a month) | Claude's apps, plus Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365 | More usage than Free, measured every 5 hours and every week | You only want Claude, inside Word as well |
Two rows change the usual advice. LanguageTool's help center now says "The LanguageTool browser extension is now exclusively available for LanguageTool Premium subscribers." Most lists still call it the free Grammarly alternative. And Claude's plan table lists "Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365" on Pro, so a $20 Claude plan reaches inside Word. It still won't underline a typo as you type.
How much more does Grammarly cost billed monthly?
Grammarly Pro costs 2.5 times as much billed monthly: $30 a month against $12 a month on the $144 yearly plan. Paid monthly for a year, that's $360. ProWritingAid has the same gap at three times ($30 against $10). The chat apps barely move. We built the chart from each vendor's own pricing page on 31 October 2026.
The monthly Grammarly price is in the plan data on grammarly.com/plans. The page itself shows the $12 yearly rate next to a free trial button. If you pay Grammarly by the month and plan to keep it for another year, switching to the yearly plan saves $216, which is more than a whole year of QuillBot Premium costs. If you're leaving, cancel before the renewal date. Wordtune shows no monthly price on its default view, and ChatGPT Plus has no yearly plan at all, so neither is in the chart.
Is there a free Grammarly alternative?
Yes, but the best free inline checker is still Grammarly Free. LanguageTool's free plan now works only on its website. Grammarly Free checks spelling and grammar wherever its extension runs and adds 100 AI prompts a month. The free options as of 31 October 2026:
| Free option | What you get | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Grammarly Free | Spelling and grammar checks, tone detection, 100 AI prompts a month | No full sentence rewrites, no plagiarism or AI text detection |
| LanguageTool Free | Grammar Checker and Paraphrasing Tool on languagetool.org | The browser extension is Premium only |
| ProWritingAid Free | Grammar, 10 Rephrases a day, line editing reports twice a day on 500 words | Long documents need Premium |
| Wordtune Basic | 10 rewrites and AI suggestions a day, 3 summaries a month | Daily cap |
| Hemingway Editor | A readability score and highlights for wordy sentences and passive voice | AI rewrites need Editor Plus, which has a 2 week trial |
| Whizi free account | 10 messages a day on Whizi AI, Auto and Claude Haiku 5.5 | A chat, not an inline checker |
Free rewrite allowances are small everywhere. Ten rewrites a day covers emails, not a thesis. If you rewrite every day, you'll end up on a paid plan, so price the one you'd actually keep.
When does staying on Grammarly win?
Grammarly wins when you want errors caught as you type, in every app, without pasting anything. Its desktop page says it "works in 1 million+ apps and programs" and names "Word, Pages, email clients, desktop applications, and web browsers." No chat app does that. Whizi, ChatGPT and Claude all wait for you to paste the text in, or to open a side panel and ask, and none of them marks a comma splice while your cursor is still in the sentence.
Stay on Grammarly if three things are true. You write mostly in Gmail, Outlook, Word or Google Docs. You want the fix applied in place, not a rewritten copy to paste back. And you use Pro's extras: plagiarism and AI text detection, citation checks, a style guide and brand tones for a team. The plans page claims over 40 million users. If that's your week, the $144 yearly plan is the cheapest way to keep it.
Leave when most of your Grammarly use is the AI prompts. Pro gives 2,000 a month on Grammarly's own assistant. A chat plan gives you whole models for the same job, and it can draft from a blank page, not only polish a sentence.
Where does Whizi beat Grammarly, and where does it lose?
Whizi loses on inline checking and wins on model choice. Start with the loss. Whizi is a chat workspace on the web and in mobile apps, so you paste a paragraph in and copy the result back out. It doesn't underline anything in Word, Gmail or Google Docs. If that's why you pay for Grammarly, keep it.
It wins when rewriting is the job. Whizi Pro is $29.99 a month, or $239.99 a year, for 2,500 credits. That covers Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet, ChatGPT Sol and Gemini, plus Kimi K3, DeepSeek and Llama, so the same paragraph can go past three labs before you pick the version you like. Each model has a fixed credit cost per message: the Writing Copilot agent and Claude Haiku 5.5 cost 1, Claude Sonnet 5 costs 10. You can compare two models side by side on the same draft and keep the better rewrite. A Project holds up to 32,000 characters of style rules for every chat in it.
The same plan also makes pictures, 100 a month on Pro. The cost math is simple. Grammarly Pro ($144) plus ChatGPT Plus ($240) runs $384 a year. If you mostly rewrite in a chat, one Whizi plan replaces the second subscription, and you can still keep Grammarly Free for typos.
- Write down where you typed last week: Word, Gmail and Docs point to an inline checker, a chat window points to a chat app
- Count how many of Grammarly Pro's 2,000 AI prompts you actually use in a month
- If you pay Grammarly monthly and plan to stay, switch to the $144 yearly plan
- If you write in several languages, trial LanguageTool Premium, since its free extension is gone
- If rewriting is the job, run one real draft through two models side by side before you buy
- Keep Grammarly Free for typos if you move your rewriting to a chat app
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free Grammarly alternative?
ProWritingAid Free is the best free Grammarly alternative for editing, with grammar checks and 10 Rephrases a day, as of 31 October 2026. LanguageTool Free now works only on its website, because its browser extension became Premium only. For inline checking in every app, Grammarly Free itself is still the strongest free plan.
Is QuillBot better than Grammarly?
QuillBot is better for paraphrasing and Grammarly is better for catching mistakes as you type. QuillBot Premium is $99.95 a year with unlimited words in its paraphraser and 9 modes. Grammarly Pro is $144 a year and works inline in Word, Google Docs, email and browsers. Our QuillBot alternatives page compares the paraphrasers.
Can ChatGPT replace Grammarly?
ChatGPT replaces Grammarly for rewriting and drafting, and it doesn't replace inline checking. You paste text into ChatGPT and copy the result back. Grammarly fixes errors where you type. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month, billed monthly only. A plan like Whizi gives GPT, Claude and Gemini in one chat for the same rewriting job.
How much does Grammarly Pro cost?
Grammarly Pro costs $144 a year, shown as $12 a month, or $30 billed monthly, as of 31 October 2026. Pro includes 2,000 AI prompts a month, full sentence rewrites, tone adjustment, and plagiarism and AI text detection. Grammarly Free stays at $0 with 100 AI prompts a month.
