My client got a T4A with an amount in box 048. How do they report it, and what do they owe on it?
For 2026, T4A box 048 fees for services go on Form T2125 as self employment income: gross on line 13499 and net on line 13500, or 13699 and 13700 for professional fees. No tax or CPP was withheld, so your client pays both CPP halves, 11.9% of net earnings above $3,500, through Schedule 8.
Where does a box 048 amount go on the return?
The CRA tells recipients to enter the box 048 amount on the applicable self employment line of the return, lines 13499 to 14300 canada.ca. In practice that means a T2125: business fees in Part 3A, professional fees in Part 3B, with one form per business
canada.ca.
| What your client received or owes | Form | Lands on |
|---|---|---|
| Box 048 fees, business activity | T2125 Part 3A | Gross line 13499, net line 13500 |
| Box 048 fees, professional activity | T2125 Part 3B | Gross line 13699, net line 13700 |
| Box 020 commissions | T2125 | Gross line 13899, net line 13900 |
| CPP on the net income | Schedule 8 (or RC381) | Line 42100 payable |
| Half of the base CPP | Schedule 8 | Credit on line 31000 |
| Other half of the base CPP plus all enhanced CPP | Schedule 8 | Deduction on line 22200 |
| Box 048 paid to a corporation | T2 return | Corporate business income |
Box 048 is never employment income, so it doesn't go on line 10100 or 10400. The CRA treats professional activities as a separate business category on the T2125, and the computation follows the same rules as any other business canada.ca. Commissions are the one fee type with their own box and lines; see T4A box 020.
Why the slip total and the T2125 rarely match
The slip is a cross check, not the income figure. Four things pull them apart, and accountants hit all four every spring.
GST/HST. The payer must leave GST/HST and PST out of box 048 canada.ca. The T2125 works the other way: amount 3A is gross sales, commissions or fees including GST/HST collected or collectible, and the tax is backed out before line 8000
canada.ca. A registered client's T2125 gross will be higher than the slips, by the tax.
Timing. A sole proprietor (other than farmers, fishers and commission agents) must use the accrual method, and generally a December 31 year end canada.ca. The payer fills in the slip by calendar year of payment. When a slip includes fees your client accrued and reported last year, the CRA says not to report them again: write a letter showing the amount and the year it was reported, attach it to a paper return, or keep it on file if you EFILE
canada.ca.
Missing slips. A payer only needs a slip once fees to one payee pass $500 in the calendar year canada.ca, and a payer outside a business, such as a homeowner hiring a renovator, often issues none. All of your client's fees go on the T2125, slip or no slip.
Expenses. The T2125 nets reasonable current expenses incurred to earn the income, including the GST/HST paid on them less any input tax credit claimed canada.ca. The slip shows none of that. The CRA's full list is on our business expenses page.
How much CPP does box 048 income cost your client?
The payer withholds no CPP, EI or income tax from fees for services canada.ca, so your client pays both the employee and employer shares on the return. For 2026 that's 5.95% each, 11.9% in total, on net earnings between the $3,500 basic exemption and the $74,600 YMPE, to a maximum of $8,460.90
canada.ca. Schedule 8 (or Form RC381 for income in more than one province) works out the amount for line 42100
canada.ca.
The 11.9% splits into a 9.9% base and a 2% first additional contribution canada.ca. Half of the base is a credit on line 31000; the other half of the base and all of the enhanced contributions are a deduction on line 22200
canada.ca. Above $74,600, CPP2 applies too; the CPP max 2026 page has those figures.
| Step (2026 rates) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Box 048 on three slips | $25,700 |
| Less fees accrued and reported in 2025 | $1,200 |
| Plus fees from clients who issued no slip | $3,000 |
| Gross fees, line 13499 (not registered for GST/HST) | $27,500 |
| Less expenses | $4,300 |
| Net income, line 13500 | $23,200 |
| Less basic exemption | $3,500 |
| Contributory earnings | $19,700 |
| CPP payable at 11.9%, line 42100 | $2,344.30 |
| Base at 9.9% | $1,950.30 |
| Half of the base, credit on line 31000 | $975.15 |
| Other half plus 2% enhanced ($975.15 + $394), deduction on line 22200 | $1,369.15 |
Worked example: your client, a freelance designer who isn't a GST/HST registrant, receives three box 048 slips totalling $25,700 for 2026. One slip includes a $1,200 December 2025 invoice already reported on the 2025 return, so it comes out (with the letter). Add $3,000 from homeowners who issued no slip and the gross is $27,500; after $4,300 of expenses, net income is $23,200 and CPP is $2,344.30. The 2026 Schedule 8 isn't published yet as of October 2026, so this uses the published 2026 rates. A Quebec resident pays QPP on the Revenu Québec return instead, and line 42100 doesn't apply canada.ca.
When do box 048 fees push your client into GST/HST registration?
Once your client's taxable supplies pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter, or over the previous four (or fewer) consecutive calendar quarters, they stop being a small supplier and must register within 29 days of the effective date of registration canada.ca. Box 048 amounts already exclude GST/HST, so adding up the slips gives a floor for the test, but fees from clients who issued no slip count too.
The single quarter test catches contractors with one big engagement. A client who bills $32,000 for a three month contract crosses in that quarter, even if the year's total ends up lower. The timing rules for each test are on the GST registration threshold page.
What should your client do when the box 048 slip is wrong?
For a wrong amount, the CRA sends recipients back to the issuer canada.ca. The payer can amend the slip online or on paper, however it first filed. On paper it writes AMENDED at the top, sends two copies to your client and one to the CRA with a letter explaining the change, and files no amended T4A Summary
canada.ca. A slip issued in error is cancelled the same way, marked CANCELLED. A DUPLICATE is only a replacement for a lost slip and never goes to the CRA.
If the payer won't fix it, report the correct fees on the T2125 anyway and keep the invoices and bank records that support the number. The return reports income, not slips.
When the real problem is status, because your client worked like an employee and got box 048 instead of a T4, either side can request a CPP/EI ruling on Form CPT1 canada.ca. The request is due by June 29 of the year after the year in question, so June 29, 2027 for 2026 work
canada.ca. The tests the CRA applies are on our employee or self employed page.
A corporation that receives box 048 slips must include all those amounts on its T2 return, and the CRA flags the case where the corporation is really a personal services business: a worker who incorporated but would reasonably be considered the client's employee canada.ca.
What did the payer have to report in box 048?
The payer reports fees for services to a Canadian resident in box 048 once the calendar year total to that payee is more than $500, or whenever it deducted tax. The rule covers payments between businesses, sole proprietors and corporations canada.ca. The CRA is not assessing penalties for box 048 failures, except under its trucking policy: for 2025 and later years, trucking businesses are penalized for not reporting fees over $500 paid to a Canadian controlled private corporation in trucking
canada.ca.
A payer whose main business is construction reports subcontractor payments for construction services on a T5018 instead, not in box 048 canada.ca. Fees paid to a nonresident for services in Canada go on a T4A-NR with 15% withheld
canada.ca. When the payer is a federal department or Crown corporation, your client's service fees show up on a T1204 slip instead. Due dates and filing penalties are on the T4A deadline page.

Does my client need a full T2125 for one small box 048 slip?
Yes. Box 048 goes on the self employment lines (13499 to 14300), and the T2125 is the form that produces those lines canada.ca. Tax software flags a box 048 amount without one. A one time gig still gets a T2125, even with no expenses.
Can my client deduct expenses against box 048 income?
Yes. Any reasonable current expense incurred to earn the income is deductible, net of any input tax credit claimed, but not the cost of capital property, which goes through CCA canada.ca.
Will my client owe tax on box 048 income at filing time?
Usually, yes. The payer withholds no income tax, CPP or EI from fees paid to a Canadian resident canada.ca, so the full income tax and both CPP halves fall due with the return. Plan for the balance, and see the self employed tax deadline page for the dates.
What is the difference between box 048 and box 020?
General information for the tax year shown, not advice for a specific client. Confirm the facts before you file or remit.
