What's the RRSP limit for 2026, and how much earned income does a client need to max it out?
The RRSP dollar limit for 2026 is $33,810, and your client can deduct the lesser of that and 18% of 2025 earned income, minus their 2025 pension adjustment, plus unused room carried forward. It takes $187,833 of 2025 earned income to reach the max. Contributions for 2026 are due by March 1, 2027.
The 2026 limit next to the years around it
The CRA lists the RRSP dollar limit at $33,810 for 2026, up from $32,490 for 2025, and it has already posted $35,390 for 2027 canada.ca. The limit is never set on its own: under the definition of "RRSP dollar limit" in ITA 146(1), each year's figure is the money purchase limit for the year before
laws-lois.justice.gc.ca. That's why the 2027 number is known in October 2026.
| Year | RRSP dollar limit | Earned income (prior year) needed to reach it |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 | $35,390 | $196,611 (2026 income) |
| 2026 | $33,810 | $187,833 (2025 income) |
| 2025 | $32,490 | $180,500 (2024 income) |
| 2024 | $31,560 | $175,333 (2023 income) |
| 2023 | $30,780 | $171,000 (2022 income) |
| 2022 | $29,210 | $162,278 (2021 income) |
The income column is the dollar limit divided by 18%, rounded to the dollar. A client below it is capped by the percentage, not by the dollar limit.
How a client's 2026 room is built
The RRSP deduction limit in ITA 146(1) is A plus B plus R, minus C. A is unused room at the end of 2025. B is the lesser of the $33,810 dollar limit and 18% of 2025 earned income, minus the client's 2025 pension adjustment. R is any pension adjustment reversal for the year, and C is any net past service pension adjustment laws-lois.justice.gc.ca. The CRA sets out the same steps on its deduction limit page
canada.ca.
Earned income is employment earnings, business earnings and certain other income, minus specific employment expenses and business or rental losses canada.ca. It's always the prior year's figure, so 2026 room comes from 2025 income.
Unused room doesn't expire. Whatever your client doesn't use carries forward as A in the next year's formula. The figure to trust is the 2026 RRSP deduction limit on their latest notice of assessment or reassessment, Form T1028, or My Account canada.ca.
Worked example: a client with a workplace pension
A pension adjustment is the total pension credits a member earned with an employer in the year, and it cuts RRSP room for the following year canada.ca. For a money purchase plan it's the employee and employer contributions for the year. For a defined benefit plan it's 9 times the benefit earned, minus $600. The employer reports it in box 52 of the T4
canada.ca.
Your client earned $120,000 of salary in 2025 and belongs to a money purchase RPP. They put in 5% and the employer matched 5%, so box 52 of the 2025 T4 shows a PA of $12,000. Their notice of assessment shows $4,500 of unused room at the end of 2025.
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| 18% of 2025 earned income ($120,000 × 18%) | $21,600 |
| 2026 RRSP dollar limit | $33,810 |
| Lesser of the two | $21,600 |
| Minus 2025 pension adjustment | minus $12,000 |
| New 2026 room | $9,600 |
| Plus unused room carried forward | plus $4,500 |
| 2026 RRSP deduction limit | $14,100 |
The PA took more than half of this client's new room. A defined benefit member feels it even more: a plan that accrues $2,000 a year of pension produces a PA of $17,400 ($2,000 × 9, minus $600).
The deadline for 2026 contributions
ITA 146(5)(a) lets your client deduct premiums paid on or before the day that is 60 days after the end of the year laws-lois.justice.gc.ca. Sixty days after December 31, 2026 is Monday, March 1, 2027. As of October 2026 the CRA hasn't posted the 2026 date yet; its dates page shows March 2, 2026 for the 2025 tax year, which was pushed a day because March 1 fell on a Sunday
canada.ca.
A contribution made in the first 60 days of 2027 that your client doesn't deduct for 2026 isn't lost. It becomes an unused contribution they can carry forward, and they report undeducted amounts on Schedule 7 canada.ca.
Age caps it too. December 31 of the year your client turns 71 is the last day they can contribute to their own RRSP canada.ca. They can still contribute to a spousal RRSP until the end of the year the spouse turns 71
canada.ca. For what happens after conversion, see the RRIF minimum withdrawal table.
Overcontributions: the $2,000 buffer and the 1% tax
Unused contributions can exceed the deduction limit on the latest notice of assessment by up to $2,000 without tax. Above that, your client pays 1% a month on the excess for every month it stays in the plan canada.ca. The charging rule is ITA 204.1(2.1), which applies to the cumulative excess amount at the end of each month
laws-lois.justice.gc.ca. The $2,000 only applies if the client was 18 or older at some point in the year before; a client younger than 19 at any time in the year works it out on Form T1-OVP-S instead
canada.ca.
Take the client from the worked example. Their 2026 deduction limit is $14,100, so they can hold $16,100 of undeducted contributions without tax. If they put in $20,000, the excess is $3,900 ($20,000 minus $16,100), and the tax is $39 for each month it sits there. They can deduct only $14,100 for 2026 either way.
The tax goes on Form T1-OVP, filed and paid within 90 days after the end of the year. The 2025 T1-OVP was due March 31, 2026 canada.ca, and the same count puts the 2026 return at March 31, 2027. If the excess came from a reasonable error and your client is taking steps to remove it, ask for a waiver on Form RC2503
canada.ca.
The other limits on the same CRA page
The CRA publishes the RRSP limit alongside the pension and TFSA limits, and the 2026 money purchase limit of $35,390 is what becomes the 2027 RRSP limit canada.ca. The DPSP limit is half the money purchase limit.
| Limit | 2026 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| RRSP dollar limit | $33,810 | $32,490 |
| Money purchase limit | $35,390 | $33,810 |
| Defined benefit limit | $3,932.22 | $3,756.67 |
| DPSP limit | $17,695 | $16,905 |
| TFSA dollar limit | $7,000 | $7,000 |
| YMPE | $74,600 | $71,300 |
| YAMPE | $85,000 | $81,200 |
The YMPE and YAMPE on that page set the CPP and CPP2 ceilings. The contribution math for those is on CPP max 2026.

Is the 2027 RRSP limit already published?
Yes. The CRA lists $35,390 for 2027, which is the 2026 money purchase limit carried over as ITA 146(1) requires canada.ca. A client needs $196,611 of 2026 earned income to reach it.
Does the $2,000 buffer reset every year?
No. It's one $2,000 cushion measured against all of your client's undeducted contributions, not a fresh $2,000 each year. The test compares cumulative unused contributions with the current deduction limit plus $2,000 canada.ca.
Can a pension adjustment ever be given back?
Yes, through a pension adjustment reversal. A PAR restores RRSP room when a member terminates membership in a defined benefit provision of an RPP or in a DPSP. It's triggered by leaving the plan, not by leaving the job, so a former employee who keeps their money in the plan doesn't get one canada.ca.
Does a client with no 2025 earned income get any 2026 room?
No new room. Eighteen percent of zero is zero, so the 2026 deduction limit is the unused room carried forward from 2025, plus any PAR and minus any net past service pension adjustment for the year.
