How do I complete the T3010 registered charity return, section by section?

Canadian CPA

For 2026 returns, complete version 24 of the T3010, which is mandatory for fiscal periods ending on or after December 31, 2023, and file it within six months of year end with financial statements and Form T1235. Answer every Section C question, attach each schedule a yes triggers, and use Schedule 6 instead of Section D above $100,000 of revenue.

What goes into a complete T3010 return?

A complete return is Form T3010 with every schedule that applies, the charity's financial statements and Form T1235 listing directors and like officials. Add Form T1236 if the charity gave to qualified donees, Form T1441 if it made grants to non qualified donees, and Form T2081 for a private foundation's excess corporate holdings canada.ca. The financial statements must all share the return's fiscal year end, even for an inactive charity.

Use version 24. The CRA says charities with a fiscal period ending on or after December 31, 2023 must file with version 24, canada.ca, and the T4033 guide adds that earlier versions won't be accepted canada.ca. The step by step instructions live in Guide T4033, Completing the Registered Charity Information Return canada.ca.

The return is due within six months of the fiscal period end, so a December 31 year end files by June 30 and a March 31 year end by September 30 canada.ca. The Act sets that deadline in subsection 149.1(14) and requires it without notice or demand laws-lois.justice.gc.ca. Miss it and the charity is liable to a $500 penalty under subsection 188.1(6) laws-lois.justice.gc.ca; keep missing it and the CRA may revoke registration. The T3010 filing deadline page covers the late path in detail.

Which answers trigger which schedule?

Most of the return is a set of yes or no questions in Sections A and C. Each yes switches on a schedule or a form, and the guide says a yes means you must complete the matching schedule canada.ca. This is the full map for version 24 canada.ca.

QuestionLineA yes means you complete
A3: public or private foundation1600Schedule 1, Foundations

C17: investment property over $100,000 or $25,0005850Schedule 8, Disbursement quota
C18: donor advised funds5860Lines 5861 to 5864

Two questions trip people up. C2 wants a plain description of what the charity actually did this year, not a restatement of its purposes and not an attached annual report. C5 has been removed from the form, and there is no Schedule 7 on version 24, so the schedules run 1 to 6 and then 8 canada.ca.

Section D or Schedule 6: which one does your client fill in?

Fill in Schedule 6 instead of Section D if any of three tests applies: revenue over $100,000, more than $25,000 of property (investments, rental property) not used in charitable activities, or permission to accumulate funds during the period. Otherwise use Section D. Never fill in both, or parts of both canada.ca.

The gotcha is the $25,000 test. It applies to every charity, while Schedule 8 for a charitable organization only starts at $100,000 of average investment property canada.ca. So a small charitable organization with $60,000 in a GIC and $40,000 of revenue files Schedule 6 but no Schedule 8.

Section D is a short summary: accounting basis on line 4020, total assets on 4200, total liabilities on 4350, revenue lines 4500 to 4700, and only three expense lines (4860 professional fees, 4810 travel, 4920 everything else). Schedule 6 adds a full balance sheet, revenue split by government level, investment and rental income, fourteen expense lines and the fundraising split on line 5020.

Report whole dollars only (the guide's example rounds $125,753.53 to $125,754), and never type "see attached financial statements" in place of a figure. On a paper return, line 4600 shows a loss in brackets; online filers enter a minus sign instead canada.ca.

How the expense lines add up to line 5100

Schedule 6 builds total expenditures in two steps: operating spending first, then qualifying disbursements to other organizations canada.ca.

LineWhat goes there
4800 to 4920Fourteen expense types, from advertising (4800) to all other (4920)
4880Total compensation, equal to line 390 on Schedule 3
4950Lines 4800 to 4920 added: expenditures before qualifying disbursements
5000, 5010, 5020, 5040Line 4950 split into charitable activities, management and administration, fundraising, other
5045Grants to non qualified donees (grantees)
5050Gifts to qualified donees
5100Lines 4950 + 5045 + 5050

Worked example: a charity spends $300,000 on its own operations (line 4950), of which $240,000 is charitable activities on line 5000, $45,000 is administration on 5010 and $15,000 is fundraising on 5020. It also gives $50,000 to another registered charity (line 5050) and $10,000 to a grantee (line 5045). Line 5100 is $300,000 + $10,000 + $50,000 = $360,000. The $50,000 gift goes on T1236, and because the grantee got more than $5,000, that grant goes on T1441 too.

Schedule 3 reports compensation by headcount, not names. Line 300 is the number of permanent full time positions, and the ten highest paid of them are counted into nine bands on lines 305 to 345, from $1 to $39,999 up to $350,000 and over. Part time and seasonal staff go on lines 370 and 380, and line 390 is total compensation, which carries to line 4880 canada.ca.

How Schedule 8 works out the disbursement quota

Schedule 8 is required only when C17 is yes: average property not used in charitable activities or administration over the 24 months before the period starts exceeded $100,000 for a charitable organization or $25,000 for a public or private foundation. The quota is 3.5% of that average up to $1,000,000, and $35,000 plus 5% of the excess above $1,000,000 laws-lois.justice.gc.ca.

StepLineAmount
Average investment property (from line 5900)805$1,400,000
Less approved accumulation810$0
Net amount815$1,400,000
Excess over $1,000,000825$400,000
5% of the excess830$20,000
Plus $35,000: quota for the year835, 840$55,000
Charitable activities + grantees + qualified donees (lines 5000, 5045, 5050)860$300,000
Excess or shortfall865$245,000 excess

The example uses the charity from the expense section: $240,000 + $10,000 + $50,000 = $300,000 of qualifying spending against a $55,000 quota. Had line 865 come out negative, the charity can draw on excesses from the five previous fiscal periods, or spend more next year and carry that excess back canada.ca. Step 2 (lines 870 to 890) repeats the math on line 5910 to estimate next year's quota. The full rules, including a short year prorated by days, are on the disbursement quota page.

Which mistakes get a T3010 sent back or flagged?

The T4033 guide warns against each of these canada.ca:

  • Cents reported, or more than one amount squeezed into one box
  • Both Section D and Schedule 6 completed
  • A Section C question left blank, or a yes with no schedule attached
  • A C2 program description that repeats the charity's purposes instead of describing activities
  • An annual report sent in place of the C2 description
  • Correspondence or governing documents attached to the return
  • Section E not signed by a person with authority to sign for the charity
  • Brackets used for negative amounts in an online filing

Everything on the return becomes public on the charities listing except the confidential parts: Section F, Schedule 4 and the private part of T1235 canada.ca. The CRA strongly encourages online filing through the charity's CRA account, either the interactive form or certified software, and a mailed return counts as received on its postmark date canada.ca. The CRA also says it aims to have every T3010 filed online beginning in 2027 canada.ca.

Does an inactive charity still have to file a T3010?

Canadian CPA

Yes. The form says an information return must be filed even if the charity is inactive, to keep its registered status canada.ca. Answer no at C1, explain why in the C2 ongoing programs space, and attach financial statements for the same year end canada.ca.

My client changed its fiscal year end. How many returns are due?

Canadian CPA

Two. A charity that changes its fiscal year end must file a separate return for the transition period canada.ca, and each return is due six months after its own period ends. The quota for the short period is prorated by days, since the formula in 149.1(1) multiplies by the number of days in the year over 365 laws-lois.justice.gc.ca.

How do I correct a T3010 that is already filed?

Canadian CPA

File Form T1240, Registered Charity Adjustment Request, through "Adjust a return" in My Business Account, by mail or by fax, and keep a copy for the charity's records canada.ca. After the original return is filed, the CRA sends a Confirmation of Annual Information Return Filing, and the posted figures show on the charities listing.

Who has to sign the return?

Canadian CPA

A person with authority to sign on behalf of the charity signs Section E, certifying the return is correct, complete and current canada.ca. The preparer goes in Section F2, which asks whether that person is the same one who certified. So when you prepare the return as the outside accountant, you go in F2 and the certification stays with someone who can sign for the charity.
