Where do you cancel GitHub Copilot? Whoever bills you decides
As of October 2026 there are seven ways to hold GitHub Copilot, and GitHub's own Manage subscription menu cancels two of them. The table below is compiled from GitHub's docs, Apple's and Google's help pages, read on 18 October 2026. Find your row first, because the steps differ completely.
| How you got Copilot | Who bills you | Where you cancel | When access ends | Money back |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Copilot Pro, Pro+ or Max bought on GitHub.com | GitHub | Settings, Billing and licensing, Licensing, Manage subscription | End of the billing cycle, then Copilot Free | No refund for unused time |
| Annual Pro or Pro+ kept on the legacy request billing | GitHub | The same Manage subscription menu | Not stated by GitHub | Prorated refund |
| Pro, Pro+ or Max bought in GitHub Mobile on iPhone or iPad | Apple | iOS Settings, your name, Subscriptions | Set by Apple | Ask Apple |
| Pro, Pro+ or Max bought in GitHub Mobile on Android | Google Play | play.google.com, Subscriptions, Manage | Your next renewal date | Google Play refund policy |
| A Copilot Business or Enterprise seat | Your employer or organization | Only an organization or enterprise owner can remove seats | End of cycle if unassigned, at once if revoked | No refund for unused time |
| Free Copilot Pro as a verified student, teacher or open source maintainer | Nobody | Cannot be cancelled; disable Copilot in your editor | Not applicable | Nothing was charged |
| Copilot Free | Nobody | Copilot settings, Show Copilot, Disabled | Immediately | Nothing was charged |
GitHub Copilot isn't Microsoft Copilot Pro. Microsoft's consumer Copilot Pro bills through your Microsoft account and cancels under Subscriptions at account.microsoft.com, per Microsoft's support page. If the charge on your card says GitHub, you're in the right place.
How do I cancel Copilot Pro, Pro+ or Max on GitHub.com?
You cancel a GitHub.com plan from Billing and licensing in your personal settings. It takes under a minute.
- Sign in to the personal account that pays for Copilot. Click your profile picture, then Settings.
- In the Access section of the sidebar, click Billing and licensing, then Licensing. If your account shows the older layout, click Billing and licensing, then Plans and usage.
- In the GitHub Copilot section, open the Manage subscription dropdown and click Cancel subscription.
- Click Cancel Copilot Pro, Cancel Copilot Pro+ or Cancel Copilot Max to confirm.
GitHub's own wording on timing is short: "You'll retain access to your current features until your billing cycle ends." Then the account drops to Copilot Free on its own. That's the whole timeline in the chart below, using the example GitHub gives in its docs, a plan bought on 3 September.
Two dates matter here, and they aren't the same one. Your billing cycle starts on the day you signed up. Your AI credit allowance resets at 00:00 UTC on the first day of every calendar month, whatever your billing date is. So someone who cancels with an empty allowance on the 20th gets a fresh one on the 1st and keeps it until the cycle ends.
Uninstalling the Copilot extension in VS Code, JetBrains or Visual Studio does nothing to billing. The plan lives on your GitHub account, so it keeps renewing until you cancel it there. Some older guides mention a Cancel trial button, but GitHub's cancel page, read 18 October 2026, has no separate trial step.
What happens after you cancel GitHub Copilot?
After you cancel, your paid plan runs to the end of the billing cycle and your account moves to Copilot Free. GitHub states that cancelling or downgrading a personal plan brings no refund for unused time.
Copilot Free still includes 2,000 code completions a month and a small allowance of AI credits, but it's limited to auto model selection. You lose the model picker. As of October 2026, Pro's $10 bought 1,500 AI credits a month, Pro+'s $39 bought 7,000 and Max's $100 bought 20,000, at $0.01 a credit.
One charge can outlive the plan. Paid usage beyond your included credits runs against a budget you set in US dollars, and GitHub bills that additional usage separately from the plan. GitHub's cancel steps don't mention budgets. So open github.com/settings/billing, click Budgets and alerts, and edit or delete any budget that covers Copilot AI credits.
Coming back isn't automatic. GitHub's troubleshooting page says a plan restored after cancellation is treated as a new subscription. It also says there's no self-service way back while individual sign-up is unavailable. That isn't hypothetical: GitHub paused new Pro, Pro+ and Student sign-ups on 20 April 2026 and only began reopening them gradually on 17 June 2026.
How do I cancel Copilot I bought in the GitHub Mobile app?
You cancel a GitHub Mobile purchase in the App Store or Google Play, not on GitHub.com. GitHub Mobile sells Copilot Pro, Pro+ and Max as in-app purchases, and Apple or Google runs the billing for those.
On iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap the GitHub subscription and tap Cancel Subscription. Apple's cancel a subscription page adds a useful check: no Cancel button, or an expiration message in red, means it's already cancelled.
On Android, go to Subscriptions in Google Play while signed in to the Google account that pays, click Manage next to GitHub and cancel. Google keeps your access until the next renewal date, and its help page warns that uninstalling an app doesn't cancel the subscription.
There's one more reason people switch away from a mobile purchase. GitHub's mobile docs say a plan bought in the app can't turn on extra paid AI credits. To get them, GitHub tells you to cancel the mobile subscription and subscribe again on GitHub.com in a browser.
How does an organization cancel Copilot Business or Enterprise?
An organization cancels Copilot Business by removing every assigned seat, and only an organization owner can do it. A member with a seat has nothing to cancel, so ask your admin.
- Click your profile picture, then Organizations, and pick the organization.
- Click Settings under the organization name.
- In the Access section, click Billing and licensing, then Licensing. On the older layout it's Copilot, then Access.
- Under the line saying Copilot Business is active, select Disabled.
- In the Remove Copilot access dialog, click Confirm and remove seats.
GitHub blocks these steps until every Copilot policy is configured, so click Go to policies first if it asks. Selecting Disabled revokes every seat, and GitHub says revoked users lose access immediately. There's no refund for the unused part of the cycle.
There's a useful twist for people with both kinds of plan. If you pay for Copilot Pro, Pro+ or Max yourself and your employer assigns you a Business or Enterprise seat, GitHub cancels your personal plan automatically. You also get a prorated refund for the rest of that cycle.
Why can't I cancel my GitHub Copilot plan?
You can't cancel Copilot when you aren't the one paying for it. GitHub names three cases.
You have free access. Verified students, teachers and maintainers of popular open source projects can't cancel the free plan. GitHub rechecks teacher and maintainer eligibility every month. To stop using it, turn Copilot off in your editor settings.
Your access comes from an organization or enterprise. The owner manages the seat. You can still disable Copilot in your editor.
You can't sign in to the account that pays. GitHub points you to its account recovery options first. If that fails, or you can't tell which account is charged, GitHub Support can stop future Copilot charges or remove the card from the locked account.
If you only use Copilot Free and want it gone, click your profile picture, then Copilot settings, and set the Show Copilot policy to Disabled. That switches off every Copilot feature on GitHub.com.
Annual subscribers are a separate case. GitHub moved Copilot from premium requests to token-based AI credits on 1 June 2026. People who kept an annual Pro or Pro+ plan on the old billing can cancel it from the same menu and get a prorated refund. They can also simply let it run out, after which GitHub moves them to Copilot Free.
Should you downgrade instead of cancelling?
Downgrade if the price is the problem and cancel if Copilot itself is. Pro+ users can drop to Pro from the same Manage subscription dropdown. The lower plan starts with your next billing cycle, and Pro still costs $10 a month as of October 2026.
Downgrading also protects your place. Cancelling makes any return a new sign-up, and GitHub closed individual sign-ups for 58 days earlier in 2026. Keeping a $10 Pro plan costs $120 a year, against $468 a year for Pro+ and $1,200 for Max.
Some people leave over models, not price. GitHub removed Claude Opus models from Copilot Pro on 20 April 2026, leaving them on Pro+ at $39. If what you miss is Claude in a chat window, Whizi Pro includes Claude Opus and Claude Sonnet at $29.99 a month, next to GPT and Gemini. The trade is real: Whizi runs in a browser tab or a phone app, so Copilot's inline suggestions in your editor stay behind.
- Find the row in the table that matches how you pay for Copilot
- Cancel Pro, Pro+ or Max in Billing and licensing under Manage subscription
- Cancel a GitHub Mobile purchase in the App Store or Google Play instead
- Edit or delete any Copilot budget under Budgets and alerts
- Ask an organization owner to remove a Business or Enterprise seat
- Downgrade Pro+ to Pro if price is the only problem
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a refund when I cancel GitHub Copilot?
Usually not. GitHub's docs say cancelling or downgrading a personal plan keeps access to the end of the cycle with no refund for unused time. The exceptions are a personal plan replaced by a company seat and a legacy annual plan, which both get a prorated refund. Our AI subscription refunds guide covers the store routes.
Can I still use GitHub Copilot for free after cancelling?
Yes. Your account drops to Copilot Free at the end of the billing cycle, with 2,000 code completions a month and a small AI credit allowance on auto model selection. For habits that keep AI code safe on any plan, see how to use AI for coding.
What can I use instead of GitHub Copilot?
Most people who leave move to a terminal agent such as Claude Code or Codex, or to a chat app with a choice of models. Each has its own meter, so check the caps before paying. Our Claude Code usage limit breakdown lists them by plan.
Is it cheaper to keep Copilot or pay for a chat plan?
It depends on how many AI plans you already pay for. Copilot Pro is $10 a month and Pro+ is $39 as of October 2026, and both overlap with any chat plan that writes code. The AI subscription savings calculator adds up what your current set costs.
