Midjourney alternatives: 9 picks priced, and the one plan that also covers chat

In brief

The best Midjourney alternative if you also pay for a chatbot is Whizi Pro: $29.99 a month covers 100 pictures plus Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini chat, against $50 for Midjourney Standard plus ChatGPT Plus. For image quality alone, OpenAI's GPT Image models lead Artificial Analysis's image arena. Midjourney itself is not ranked there.

Which Midjourney alternative fits the reason you are leaving?

Pick the alternative by what Midjourney doesn't do for you. If you pay for it next to a chatbot, one plan that does both is cheaper. If you want the best image model you can buy, go to OpenAI or Google. And if you just want free, three of these cost nothing. We read every price below on the vendor's own page on 31 October 2026, in US dollars. The arena column is Artificial Analysis's text to image leaderboard on the same day.

Whizi publishes this page, and it's first on the list for one kind of reader: the person paying Midjourney and a chatbot every month. If images are all you do, the table has cheaper picks, and the sections below say which one wins each job. The image generator guide covers the wider field, and the Nano Banana alternatives page covers Google's model.

Which Midjourney alternative makes the best images?

OpenAI's GPT Image models make the best images by human preference. They hold the top three places on Artificial Analysis's text to image board on 31 October 2026, led by GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst at 1222 Elo. Google's Nano Banana 2.1 is fourth at 1176, and it costs about a sixth as much per image.

GPT Image 2 ranks highest here at 21 cents an image. Nano Banana 2.1 costs 3.4

Each dot is one model, at the price per 1,000 images that the board lists, divided by ten. The Elo comes from pairwise human votes. Midjourney has no dot. The board, which runs past 100 models, doesn't list Midjourney at all, so no independent ranking puts it above or below the others. You'll have to judge its look with your own eyes.

The price on the chart is the developer price. It isn't what a subscription charges you. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month whatever the image price, and the Gemini app makes Nano Banana 2 images on a free account. Whizi's Whizi Image and Nano Banana rows both run Nano Banana 2 Lite, 15th on the board at 1107. That's above every Ideogram and Recraft model listed and below Nano Banana 2.

Is there a free Midjourney alternative?

Yes, Bing Image Creator is the best free Midjourney alternative for volume. Microsoft's help page says it's "free for everyone with a Microsoft Account" and gives "15 free fast image creations" a day. After those, it keeps going at standard speed. Midjourney has nothing like it. Its free trial page says no trial is available on the website or in Discord, and the one exception is a limited trial in the niji journey app.

Ideogram's catch matters if you're doing client work. Its plans page states that "On the free plan, everything you generate is public." Paid Ideogram plans keep new images private until you publish them.

Why does one plan beat Midjourney plus a chatbot?

One plan beats two when you'd pay for both anyway. Midjourney Standard is $30 a month and ChatGPT Plus is $20, so the pair costs $50. Whizi Pro is $29.99 a month, or $19.99 billed yearly. It carries 100 pictures a month and the chat models behind both of those bills: ChatGPT Sol, Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet and Gemini, plus Kimi K3 and the DeepSeek and Llama lines. You can also run two models side by side on one prompt.

Powerhouse goes further, at $49.99 a month. It raises pictures to 500 a month and adds Whizi Video AI and two music models. Midjourney makes video too, and it costs GPU time: its video page puts a batch of four SD clips at 8 minutes of fast time. Midjourney makes no music and no chat.

Here's where Whizi loses, plainly. Its images come from Nano Banana 2 Lite, Flux Schnell and Stable Diffusion 3.5. Flux Schnell, listed as FLUX.1 [schnell], sits 104th on the arena board at 740 Elo. A new Whizi image is square, while Midjourney takes any aspect ratio. If you rely on Midjourney's style references or personalization, test before you switch. An edit can mix up to 4 of your photos and keeps your photo's framing. If the Midjourney look is the reason you pay, Whizi won't replace it.

When does staying on Midjourney win?

Staying wins when you make a lot of images and like how they look. Standard, Pro and Mega include unlimited Relax mode, so a heavy month costs the same $30 as a light one. No paid credit plan in the table does that. Here's what each Midjourney plan buys, from its plan comparison on 31 October 2026:

Midjourney planBilled monthlyBilled yearlyFast GPU time a monthRelax modeStealth mode
Basic$10$96 ($8 a month)3.3 hoursNoNo
Standard$30$288 ($24 a month)15 hoursUnlimited for imagesNo
Pro$60$576 ($48 a month)30 hoursUnlimited, plus SD videoYes
Mega$120$1,152 ($96 a month)60 hoursUnlimited, plus SD videoYes

Basic is the dearest fast time on the list, at about $3 an hour against $2 on every other plan. Unused fast time doesn't roll over. One rule decides the plan for some readers. Midjourney's commercial use page says a business grossing more than $1,000,000 a year needs Pro or Mega to use its images commercially. If that's you, the real Midjourney price is $60 a month, and every alternative above looks cheaper.

Our read: if Relax mode on Standard covers your volume and you like the results, stay, and switch to yearly billing to pay $24 instead of $30. Leave when you're paying a second subscription for chat, or when your images need readable text, which is Ideogram's job.

Workflow checklist
  • Add up what you pay for Midjourney and any chatbot together before you compare plans
  • Try Gemini and Bing Image Creator for free before paying for any image plan
  • Check that an alternative makes the aspect ratios you use, since a new Whizi image is square
  • Read Ideogram's free plan rule: every free image is public
  • If your company earns over $1,000,000 a year, price Midjourney at Pro, not Basic
  • Move to yearly billing if you stay on Midjourney, which saves 20%
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free alternative to Midjourney?

Bing Image Creator is the best free alternative to Midjourney for volume, with 15 fast images a day on a free Microsoft account as of October 2026. Gemini is the free pick for quality, since it runs Google's Nano Banana 2, which scores 1140 Elo on Artificial Analysis's image arena. Midjourney has no free trial on its website.

Is Midjourney free?

No. Midjourney's help center says no free trial is available on midjourney.com or in Discord, with a limited exception in the niji journey app. The cheapest plan is Basic at $10 a month, or $96 a year, as of 31 October 2026.

What is better than Midjourney?

OpenAI's GPT Image models rank highest by human preference, holding the top three places on Artificial Analysis's image arena on 31 October 2026, with Google's Nano Banana 2.1 fourth. Midjourney isn't on that board, so no ranking compares it directly. Ideogram is better for text inside images.

Can I use a Midjourney alternative without Discord?

Yes. Every alternative on this page runs in a web app or a phone app with no Discord account. Midjourney itself also runs on midjourney.com now, so Discord alone is no longer a reason to leave.
