Nano Banana alternatives: only GPT Image ranks higher, and 8 picks priced

In brief

The best Nano Banana alternative is OpenAI's GPT Image, in ChatGPT Plus for $20 a month. OpenAI holds the top three places in Artificial Analysis's image arena, and Google's Nano Banana 2.1 is fourth. Bing Image Creator is the free pick, with 15 fast images a day. Whizi carries Nano Banana 2 Lite with its chat models.

Which Nano Banana alternative is actually better?

OpenAI's GPT Image is the only family that beats Nano Banana on quality. On Artificial Analysis's text to image board on 31 October 2026, three of its models hold the top three places. Google's Nano Banana 2.1 is fourth at 1176 Elo. That's it. Every other alternative on this page wins on something else, such as a lower price, more free images, better text in the picture, clearer rights, or a menu of models to pick from.

Each bar is the model's arena Elo from pairwise human votes, and the note is the board's API price per image. Two things stand out. First, "Nano Banana" isn't one model. Google sells four current ones under the name, plus the original Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, which its pricing page marks deprecated. The newest one, Nano Banana 2.1, is both the best and the cheapest. The Gemini API pricing page lists it at $0.0336 a 1K image, against $0.067 for Nano Banana 2 and $0.134 for Nano Banana Pro. So if Pro's price sent you looking, the fix may be another Nano Banana. Second, GPT Image 2 costs about six times as much per image as Nano Banana 2.1 for 10 more Elo.

How do the Nano Banana alternatives compare on price?

The alternatives run from $0 to $20 a month for a person, as of 31 October 2026. We read every price on the vendor's own page that day, in US dollars, billed monthly unless the cell says otherwise.

Krea's row shows what a reseller adds. Its pricing page says the $9 Basic plan buys about 112 Nano Banana 2 generations, which is about 8 cents each. Google's API charges 6.7 cents for the same model at 1K. You pay Krea for the app and the other models, not for a cheaper Nano Banana.

Adobe's free plan is the odd one. Its plans page says the free plan includes "popular models like Nano Banana", so it's another way into Google's model, not away from it.

Is there a free Nano Banana alternative?

Yes. Bing Image Creator is the free Nano Banana alternative with the most volume. Microsoft's help page says it's "free for everyone with a Microsoft Account" with "15 free fast image creations" a day, after which standard speed stays available. It runs Microsoft's own models. Its MAI-Image-2.6-Flash scores 1119 on the arena board, 21 points under Nano Banana 2. One limit is worth knowing: if you upload a photo to edit, it says "all image editing will be done using MAI-Image-2.6-Flash."

Nano Banana is free too, and that's often the better answer. Google's subscriptions page lists image generation and editing on a $0 account. The Gemini limits page gives Google AI Plus "2x higher than standard limits" and Pro "4x", without a number of images. The other free routes are Krea's 100 units a day, Ideogram's 30 credits a week, and open weights on your own GPU.

Where does Whizi fit if you use Nano Banana?

Whizi, which publishes this page, fits if you want Nano Banana and your chat models on one bill. Its Whizi Image and Nano Banana rows both run Nano Banana 2 Lite, which sits 15th on the arena board at 1107 Elo. A photo edit can mix up to 4 of your images and keeps your photo's framing. Pro is $29.99 a month for 100 pictures plus chat models that include Claude Opus, ChatGPT Sol and Gemini. Powerhouse, at $49.99, raises that to 500 pictures, opens the whole model catalog, and adds video and music.

It loses on the model itself. Whizi doesn't carry Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana 2 or Nano Banana Pro, so its Nano Banana ranks below all three. A new Whizi image is square, and its two other image models are older: Flux Schnell sits 104th on the board. If image quality is the whole job, the Gemini app gives you a better Nano Banana for free. Whizi wins only for the reader who would otherwise pay for a chatbot and an image plan separately.

When does staying with Nano Banana win?

Staying wins on quality for the money, and it isn't close. Nano Banana 2.1 is fourth on the board at $0.0336 an image on the API, while GPT Image 2 is third at $0.211. You'd pay six times as much for a lead of 10 points. And in the Gemini app, a free account can already make Nano Banana 2 images.

Here's what the Gemini API charges for each Nano Banana at each resolution, from Google's pricing page on 31 October 2026. If you send your requests as a batch, they cost half.

Leave Nano Banana when you need something it doesn't do well. Ideogram is the pick for long text in a poster. Midjourney is the pick for its own look, and open weights are the pick when nothing may leave your machine. ChatGPT is the pick when you'll pay $20 for the top of the board. The Gemini image limit guide explains what happens when the free allowance runs out.

Workflow checklist
  • Check which Nano Banana you used: 2.1, 2, 2 Lite and Pro differ in rank and in price
  • Try Nano Banana 2.1 on the Gemini API before leaving over Nano Banana Pro's price
  • Use Bing Image Creator for free volume, with 15 fast images a day
  • Pay for ChatGPT Plus only if the top ranked model is worth $20 a month to you
  • Use Ideogram when the image must carry readable text
  • Remember that Ideogram's free images are public
