Employer RRSP contribution: taxable benefit, CPP yes, EI sometimes

How are employer contributions to an employee's RRSP taxed, and what goes on the T4?

Canadian CPA

An employer RRSP contribution for an employee is a 2026 taxable benefit reported in T4 box 14 and code 40, and CPP applies. EI applies too unless the employee can't withdraw the money before retiring or leaving. You can skip income tax withholding with reasonable grounds that the employee can deduct it. A DPSP contribution avoids all three.

Which payroll deductions apply to each kind of contribution?

Money you put into an employee's RRSP is a taxable benefit unless it was withheld from the employee's own pay. The value goes in box 14 and code 40 of the T4, and CPP is always deducted on it canada.ca. Whether EI applies turns on one question: can the employee take the money out of the group RRSP before retiring or leaving?

The benefit is the total you paid minus anything the employee reimbursed you, and it belongs in the pay period it was received or enjoyed canada.ca. Don't put the match in box 20: the CRA says not to report RRSP or FHSA contributions there canada.ca.

The employee's own payroll deductions are different. They aren't a benefit, and the T4001 lets you lower the pay you calculate income tax on by the RRSP contribution you withhold, when you have reasonable grounds to believe the employee can deduct it canada.ca. That relief covers income tax only. The salary stays pensionable and insurable.

Why does EI depend on whether the employee can withdraw?

The CRA treats your RRSP contributions as cash benefits in general. They become non cash benefits only when the employee can't withdraw the amounts from the group RRSP before retiring or ceasing to be employed. Withdrawals under the Home Buyers' Plan or the Lifelong Learning Plan don't count against that test canada.ca.

The EI result follows from the regulations. Insurable earnings exclude non cash benefits other than board or lodging, under paragraph 2(3)(a) of the Insurable Earnings and Collection of Premiums Regulations laws-lois.justice.gc.ca. The T4001 lists employer contributions to a group RRSP where access is restricted as an exception to the usual EI deduction canada.ca.

So the lock in is a plan design choice with a payroll consequence. If the plan lets the employee withdraw your match at any time, you deduct EI on it and it goes in box 24. If the plan locks your money in until the employee retires or leaves, with only Home Buyers' Plan or Lifelong Learning Plan withdrawals allowed, there's no EI. Read the plan contract, not the enrolment brochure.

When can you skip income tax on the contribution?

Don't deduct income tax on contributions you make to an employee's RRSP or FHSA if you have reasonable grounds to believe the employee can deduct the contribution for the year. The CRA generally accepts the employee's confirmation that it's deductible, or a copy of the RRSP deduction limit statement from their notice of assessment canada.ca.

The ceiling is the employee's available RRSP deduction limit for the year, and it covers everything you contribute to the employee's own RRSP and to a spouse's or common law partner's RRSP canada.ca. Count your match and the employee's payroll deductions together against that room. Once they're past it, the reasonable grounds are gone and you withhold income tax on the rest.

The exemption is for money you pay into the plan. Revenu Québec ties the Quebec exemption to the same payment route: no Quebec income tax at source if you remit the contributions directly to the RRSP issuer revenuquebec.ca. Cash handed to the employee to contribute later is ordinary pay.

What does a 4% match on a $60,000 salary add to 2026 payroll?

Your client pays an employee $60,000 a year. The employee puts 4% of pay ($2,400) into the group RRSP through payroll, and your client matches it with $2,400. The employee confirmed in writing that they have at least $4,800 of 2026 RRSP room.

The 2026 rates are 5.95% for CPP each side, with a $74,600 YMPE canada.ca, and 1.63% for EI with employers paying 1.4 times, on insurable earnings up to $68,900 canada.ca. Both totals below stay under those ceilings, so the full match attracts them.

Extra employer EI ($39.12 × 1.4)$54.77$0
Income tax withheld on the match$0$0
Pay used for income tax withholding$57,600$57,600

The employee claims $4,800 on line 20800 canada.ca, which offsets the $2,400 benefit and their own $2,400. Taxable employment income less the deduction is $57,600, the same figure payroll used for withholding. Box 52 stays blank, because no pension adjustment is reported for a group RRSP canada.ca.

How does a DPSP compare with a group RRSP match?

A DPSP contribution never becomes employment income. Subparagraph 6(1)(a)(i) of the Income Tax Act excludes benefits from your contributions to a deferred profit sharing plan, along with registered pension plans and pooled registered pension plans; RRSPs aren't on that list laws-lois.justice.gc.ca. The CRA puts it plainly: employees don't pay tax on DPSP contributions made for their benefit, and the employer can deduct them canada.ca.

CPP and EI drop away for the same reason. CPP contributory salary is income from pensionable employment computed under the Income Tax Act laws-lois.justice.gc.ca, and the EI regulations exclude amounts left out of income under paragraph 6(1)(a) in 2(3)(a.1) laws-lois.justice.gc.ca.

The DPSP rules come from section 147: employee contributions aren't permitted under 147(2)(a.1), vesting can't wait past 24 consecutive months as a beneficiary under 147(2)(i), the cap in 147(5.1) is the lesser of 18% of compensation and half the money purchase limit, and 147(8) lets the employer deduct contributions paid in the year or within 120 days after it laws-lois.justice.gc.ca. Half of the 2026 money purchase limit of $35,390 is the $17,695 DPSP limit canada.ca. Contributions and earnings are taxed when withdrawn canada.ca.

You report the DPSP pension credit as a PA in box 52, including all employer contributions made in the year for the member, with the plan's registration number in box 50 canada.ca. Where you run a DPSP beside a group RRSP, the PA covers the DPSP part only. A common design is the employee's own money in the group RRSP and your match in the DPSP. The PA math is on pension adjustment calculation.

What does the match do to the employee's RRSP room?

A group RRSP match is the employee's RRSP contribution in every way that matters for room. It's deducted on line 20800 canada.ca against the employee's own deduction limit, and your income tax exemption only holds while that limit covers it canada.ca. For 2026 the dollar limit is $33,810 canada.ca; the full room formula is on RRSP limit 2026.

Mandatory group plan contributions get one break. The T4040 says mandatory contributions to a group RRSP or a PRPP aren't subject to the 1% per month tax for the year they're made, though they can be taxed the following year canada.ca. An employee who maxes out a personal RRSP and then joins a mandatory plan partway through the year still needs to fix the excess; the steps are on T1-OVP.

Does the match go in T4 box 20?

Canadian CPA

No. Box 20 is for RPP contributions, and the CRA says not to report RRSP or FHSA contributions you made for the employee there canada.ca. The match goes in box 14 and code 40; the full code list is on T4 other information codes.

What if the employee has no RRSP room left?

Canadian CPA

Then you have no reasonable grounds, so you withhold income tax on the contribution canada.ca. CPP and EI don't change, and the employee may owe the 1% monthly tax on the excess unless it was a mandatory group plan contribution in its first year canada.ca.

How is an employer RRSP contribution reported in Quebec?

Canadian CPA

On the RL-1, the benefit goes in boxes A and L, plus box G or box I where applicable. There's no Quebec income tax at source if you remit directly to the RRSP issuer, and no QPIP when the group RRSP is locked until retirement or termination, apart from HBP and LLP withdrawals revenuquebec.ca. The federal T4 rules above still apply.

Is a contribution to the employee's spousal RRSP treated the same way?

Canadian CPA

Yes. Revenu Québec names contributions to an RRSP whose annuitant is the employee or their spouse as a taxable benefit to the employee revenuquebec.ca, and federally the total going to the employee's own and their spouse's RRSP can't exceed the employee's available deduction limit canada.ca. Withdrawals later fall under spousal RRSP attribution.
