My client got a CRA review letter asking for receipts. How should I respond, and what happens if we miss the date?
As of October 2026, answer a CRA review letter by the date printed on it, quote its reference number, and upload the receipts it asks for through Submit documents in Represent a Client, which needs Level 2 access. A review is not an audit. If the CRA changes the claim, your client objects to the reassessment, not the letter.
Which CRA review sent the letter, and what comes next?
The CRA runs eight review programs on T1 returns, and the program decides whether the letter arrives before or after the notice of assessment canada.ca. The CRA says being selected for review does not represent a tax audit
canada.ca. If an auditor is involved, the CRA audit process applies instead.
| Program | When it runs | What it checks |
|---|---|---|
| Preassessment Review | Before the notice of assessment | Income, deductions and credits on the return |
| Processing Review | After the notice of assessment | The same items as the preassessment review |
| Request Verification | Before a notice of reassessment | Your change request, to confirm it is allowable and supported |
| Refund Examination | Before or after the notice of assessment | That the right refund is issued |
| Supplementary Examination | Before or after the notice of (re)assessment | Income, losses and deductions that need a closer look |
| Matching | After the notice of assessment | The return against slips from employers, banks and other third parties |
| Special Assessments | Before or after the notice of assessment | Detailed reviews to find trends and noncompliance |
| Identity Protection Services | Before or after the notice of assessment | Suspected identity theft and compromised accounts |
For the Preassessment Review, Processing Review, Request Verification and Matching programs, the CRA first tries to verify the claim with information it already has, and contacts your client or you by phone or in writing only when it needs more canada.ca. A return selected for review can take longer than the 4 weeks the CRA aims for on 95% of EFILE returns
canada.ca. A Request Verification letter means the CRA is checking a change you asked for, which ties it to Change my return.
How do you answer the letter before its deadline?
The CRA doesn't publish one standard deadline for review letters. Each letter states its own time frame, and that date is the one that counts canada.ca.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1. Read the letter | Note the year, the line under review, the documents listed and the reply date |
| 2. Find the reference number | Upper right corner of the letter; quote it on everything you send |
| 3. Gather the proof | Send every receipt and document that applies, not a sample |
| 4. Fill the gaps | If a receipt is missing, add a written explanation or call the number at the bottom of the letter |
| 5. Need more time | Call the number at the bottom of the letter before the date passes |
| 6. Upload | Submit documents in Represent a Client, entering the reference number as the case number |
| 7. Keep the proof | Save the confirmation number and the case or reference number |
The steps follow the CRA's page on responding to a review canada.ca. In Submit documents, a case or reference number is needed when the CRA has asked for documents. Each file needs a unique name, most programs accept up to 500 MB per submission, and the upload shows in the history table within 24 hours
canada.ca. If you get a "Service Unavailable" error, the CRA says the file is usually corrupted or unsupported, so save it as a PDF and try again.
Your access level matters. In Represent a Client, Submit documents needs Level 2 authorization (Level 1 has no access), while the client's mail is viewable at every level canada.ca. With Level 1 you can read the letter but your client has to upload, or you mail the package to the address on the letter.
What proof does the reviewer expect for the claims it checks most?
The CRA publishes the claims it most often adjusts on review and the documents it usually wants for each canada.ca. Send the full set with the first reply.
| Claim (line) | What the reviewer checks | Proof to send |
|---|---|---|
| Medical expenses (33099, 33199) | Paid, eligible, not reimbursed | Receipts dated, marked paid, showing the reason, patient and prescriber where needed |
| Tuition (32000 of Schedule 11) | Calendar year, course and level shown | Official receipt naming the course or program and academic level |
| Tuition transfer from a child (32400) | Capped at $5,000 less what the student needed | The student's Schedule 11 and the designation on the T2202, TL11A or TL11C |
| Moving expenses (21900) | New home at least 40 km closer to the new work or school | Proof of both addresses, income at the new location, cost receipts |
| Eligible dependant (30400) | Not married or common law, dependant living with your client | Custody proof; shared custody needs both parents' agreement |
| Northern residents (25500) | Six months of residence in a prescribed zone | Form T2222 with full residence addresses |
| Foreign tax credit (40500, T2209) | Foreign tax actually paid | Foreign assessment, IRS account transcript, foreign slips and return |
| Other deductions (23200) | Allowable and not claimed elsewhere | Proof the amount is deductible at all |
Two details catch people. For US tax, an IRS Tax Return Transcript alone is not enough; the CRA wants the account transcript. And documents in another language need the original plus an acceptable English or French translation, done by someone other than the taxpayer canada.ca. Medical receipts for over the counter products such as vitamins are refused regardless of the paperwork; the medical expense threshold page covers what counts.
What happens if your client misses the deadline?
If the requested information doesn't arrive by the date in the letter, the CRA reviews the claim with what it has and may reduce or deny it, which can leave a balance owing canada.ca. Late is still better than never: when a claim has been changed and your client then finds the documents, the CRA accepts them and reviews the claim again for a possible adjustment
canada.ca.
The formal route only opens once a notice exists. Under ITA 165(1), a taxpayer objects to an assessment, and an individual has until the later of one year after the filing due date and 90 days after the notice was sent; corporations get 90 days laws-lois.justice.gc.ca. The CRA suggests calling or writing to discuss the disagreement first, since many disputes end there
canada.ca.
Interest generally still runs on the amount in dispute, and paying all or part of it reduces the interest. Once an objection is filed, the CRA normally postpones collecting the disputed income tax until 90 days after it sends its decision canada.ca. The rate is on the CRA overdue interest page, and the full objection rules are on the notice of objection deadline page.
When does each deadline fall in a 2025 medical expense review?
Your client is an employee who filed a 2025 T1 by April 30, 2026 and claimed medical expenses. A Processing Review letter dated October 15, 2026 asks for the receipts by the date printed on it, say November 16, 2026. Your client finds everything except $2,000 of receipts, and the claim that remains still clears the threshold.
The lost receipts cost a federal credit of $2,000 × 14.5% = $290, because 14.5% is the blended lowest federal rate for 2025 canada.ca. The provincial credit on the same $2,000 goes too, plus interest.
| Event | Date | How it is counted |
|---|---|---|
| Review letter | October 15, 2026 | Date on the letter |
| Reply date in the letter | November 16, 2026 | Set by the letter itself, call before it to ask for more time |
| Notice of reassessment | December 1, 2026 | Claim reduced by $2,000 |
| 90 days after the notice | March 1, 2027 | 30 days in December, 31 in January, 28 in February, 1 in March |
| One year after the filing due date | April 30, 2027 | 2025 T1 due April 30, 2026 |
| Last day to object | April 30, 2027 | The later of the two, ITA 165(1) |
If your client or their spouse is a sole proprietor, the 2025 filing due date was June 15, 2026 canada.ca, so the last day to object moves to June 15, 2027. Use the months before that date to find the receipts and send them in as new information, which can settle the matter without an objection.
Why did the letter go to your client instead of you?
The Special Assessments Program sends its information requests straight to your client, not to you as the preparer canada.ca. So ask clients to forward any CRA letter, and check their mail in Represent a Client yourself.
Selection itself says little about the return. The CRA picks returns when they don't match third party slips such as T4s, by the type of deduction or credit claimed, by compliance history, or at random, and every return passes through its computer screening canada.ca. The CRA says a selection doesn't reflect on you as the preparer
canada.ca.
The CRA may ask for more than receipts, such as cancelled cheques or bank statements, and tells individuals to keep supporting documents for at least six years canada.ca. ITA 230(4) sets the same six years from the end of the last tax year the records relate to
laws-lois.justice.gc.ca; the exceptions are on the record retention page.

Can my client get more time to answer?
Yes, usually. For the Preassessment Review, Processing Review and Request Verification programs, call the number at the bottom of the letter before the date passes and ask for more time; the T1 Matching Program line is 1-866-772-2237 canada.ca. For a foreign tax credit review, the CRA may allow one extension but not a second
canada.ca.
Can we object to the review letter itself?
No. An objection is filed against a notice of assessment or reassessment under ITA 165(1), so a letter asking for receipts gives nothing to object to laws-lois.justice.gc.ca. Answer the letter, and object only if a reassessment follows and the CRA won't change it after a call
canada.ca.
How do I confirm a call about the review really came from the CRA?
Take the caller's name, office and callback number, hang up, and check the number with the CRA's verification tool before calling back canada.ca. If the tool can't confirm it, call 1-800-959-8281 for individuals. For letters, look for the same letter in your client's online mail.
Does a review letter mean an audit is next?
No. The CRA says selection for review does not represent a tax audit canada.ca. An audit is a separate process with its own contact letter and response timelines, set out on the CRA audit process page.
